Day Two sees a return to the fast roads near Middlemarch including Ramrock Road and a repeat run through Moonlight. These are followed by a stage last used in the first Otago Classic in 1997 and finishing with the fabulous Waipori Gorge and Kuri Bush stages.

SECTION 5 STAGE DESCRIPTIONS

2016 will mark the 20th running of the International Classic Rally of Otago. Over the years we have been fortunate to have many overseas competitors contest this event including several WRC stars and Australian Champions. For 2016 we have decided to name the stages after these competitors to mark the 20th running of the event.

STAGE DESCRIPTIONS : LEG ONE

SATURDAY 9th APRIL 2016

SS 1 Auriol 11 km 1994 World Rally Champion and co-driver contested the Otago Rally in 2014. This is the only 100% forestry stage in the event. It is the reverse of the ‘Razorback Stage’ (SS 2 and SS 6) in 2015 but has never before been run in this direction. Steep climb at start to 500m above sea level then a fast descent. Typical forestry road surface but could be rough in places.

SS 2 Mikkola 22 km , rally legend and World Champion in 1983, came to Otago in 2003. This stage was last used in 2010 in this direction and known as ‘Ridge Road’. Starts on tarmac then fast flowing stage on public roads to the west of Oamaru. Will likely have significant amounts of the ‘Oamaru marble’ gravel until a swept line is established. Likely to be dusty if dry. Lots of blind brows.

SS 3 Biasion 27 km 1988 and 1989 World Champion competed at Otago in 2013. Again, this stage was last used in 2010 in this direction (Tokarahi) however last few kilometres are different. Similar in character to SS 2 on fast flowing public roads with crests. 200m of tarmac in middle of stage.

SS 4 Paddon 9 km 2011 PWRC Champion Hayden Paddon needs no introduction to Kiwi rally fans. A stage new to Rally of Otago although part of it was used in the 1980’s ‘Rally of the South’ organised by the North Otago Car Club. Fast public road on medium gravel.

SS 5 Brookes 29 km Multiple British Rally Champion was the first European driver to enter Otago in 2001. This stage is Danseys Pass – as rallied on by Russell Brookes in 2001. Last used in this direction in 2010. A Classic stage over a sub-alpine pass. Medium gravel with a mixture of fast and twisty sections with large drops in places. A real challenge and likely to be one of the slower stages in 2016.

SS 6 Dunkerton 13 km Ross Dunkerton, multiple Australian and APRC Champion has made the trip across the Tasman several times, most recently in 2009. This stage is the second half of the ‘Taieri Peak’ stage last used in this direction in 2010. Public road, medium gravel although last few kilometres may have heavier metal after road realignment due to mining in the area. Will be rough in places.

SS 7 Liatti 16 km Multiple event winner in the WRC Piero Liatti was our guest in 2010. This stage is the last half of the ‘Golden Bar’ stage last used in 2012. Fast public road through farmland with some big crests – particularly towards the finish.

SS 8 Mouton 2 km Who can forget Michèle Mouton and Fabrizia Pons tearing up the tarmac in the Quattro in 2008? This has been used as a publicity stage every year since 1996. Four laps of a city block on tarmac. Fast and exciting with a big crowd but watch for other cars, kerbs, power poles and barriers .....

STAGE DESCRIPTIONS : LEG TWO

SUNDAY 10th APRIL 2016

SS 9 Kankkunen 29 km Superstar and 4 x World Champion contested the Otago Classic in 2004. In 2015, this stage was run in the opposite direction and won outright by Hayden Paddon in a BDA Escort. Last run in this direction in 2013. 100% public roads. Medium gravel over a hard base. Sections of fast flowing roads interspersed with tighter sections through tussock country. A great stage to start the day.

SS 10 McRae 11 km Both Jimmy and Alister McRae have competed at Otago and this stage is named in recognition of that great rally family. Unfortunately it’s also where Alister’s charge in 2009 came to an end with a blown engine. Also known as the ‘Moonlight’ stage it is a fast and wide blast on public roads after an initial steep climb which is rough in places.

SS 11 Bates 19 km Multiple Australian Champion Neal Bates first came to Otago in 2013 and won this stage – along with many others – to take out the Otago Classic win. Also known as ‘Hartfield’ it will be very fast (127 km/hour average for Hayden Paddon that year) on public roads.

SS 12 Fiorio 12 km from Italy finished second in the 1989 WRC and contested Otago in 2007. This stage has not been run in this direction before. It is the reverse of the ‘Longdale’ stage last used in 2013. Not as quick as SS 11 but still fast public road.

SS 13 Evans 11 km Former British Rally Champion Gwyndaf Evans came to Otago in 2012 and while he did not rally over this stage quickly got to grips with the Otago roads with his WRC champion co-driver Phil Mills. This stage is a repeat of SS 10.

SS 14 Waldegård 17 km The late Björn Waldegård, World Champion in 1979, competed at Otago two times and was a crowd favourite. This stage has not been used since the first Otago Classic Rally in 1997 and will be very fast and wide through open farmland.

SS 15 Vatanen 15 km 1981 World Champion contested Otago in 2011 and attracted massive crowds. Unfortunately his run came to an end when he lost a wheel in the Berwick Forest. This is a new stage that starts on very fast and wide public roads before turning into the forest for the last 10 km.

SS 16 Pons 13 km It is appropriate that one of the most popular Otago stages is named after one of the most popular visitors - Fabrizia Pons has competed in the event on many occasions, most recently as co-driver to Miki Biasion in 2013. This stage is run down Waipori Gorge (same as 2013). It is tighter and slower than most Otago stages and runs down a steep sided gorge with the river a constant threat.

SS 17 Hagström 15 km Pasi Hagström from is a two times winner of the Otago Classic and made this stage his own (until Hayden Paddon came along!) This is the signature Otago stage starting at Kuri Bush. Huge crests requiring massive commitment rewarding the brave. Some of the in-car footage is legendary. Won last year by Matt Summerfield in a Subaru WRX at an average speed of 117 km/hour.
