Press Release nr. 2 28th April 2017 AT RALLYLEGEND 2017 AN EPOCHAL EVENT: FIFTEEN RALLY WORLD CHAMPIONS, FROM 1977 TO TODAY, PRESENT IN SAN MARINO FOR THE "COLIN MC RAE TRIBUTE". Almost the entire World Rally Hall of Fame, from birth to today, gathers for the tribute to the great Scottish driver, ten years after his death Republic of San Marino. All together, at Rallylegend next October 21st and 22nd: Walter Rohrl, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Timo Salonen, Juha Kankkunen, Miki Biasion, Didier Auriol, Tommi Makinen, Marcus Gronholm, Petter Solberg, Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier, with Sandro Munari and Markku Alen, winners of the FIA Driver Cups 1977 and 1978, that later became the World Rally Drivers since 1979. Fifteen World Rally Champions, for a total of thirty-four world drivers titles - almost all the history of the World Championship series - will gather in the Republic of San Marino - for two days World Rally Capital - for the "Colin Mc Rae Tribute", Rallylegend's tribute to the memory of the great Scottish champion, ten years after his premature and tragic disappearance. For Colin Mc Rae, at Rallylegend there will also be Derek Ringer, the co-driver with whom the late Scottish driver won the World Championship title in 1995, and Nicky Grist, another important co-driver for him; while two other World Champion co-drivers, Hans Thorszelius and Robert Reid, will be present at San Marino to bring their memory of two champions who are no longer among us, such as Bjorn Waldegaard and Richard Burns. An epochal event, a "reunion" so far never seen, the dream of all fans: having so many legendary champions, all together, for two days. -

Editorial I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Julian Porters talk at Bishop Auckland Golf Club last Wednesday (12th December) I don’t think there is anyone who has as much knowledge of the Championship as Julian and we as a club are extremely fortunate that he was able to give us some of his valuable time to provide a fantastic insight into the WRC. It was also great to see so many club members and visitors from other clubs attend. I was also quite taken with the venue, and I understand that the catering was also of a very high standard (damn diet!!!) For special events such as this and the Dinner Dance, providing the costs are not too prohibitive, I would say that it is an ideal venue. -

New Car News. Mostly exotics this month. Designed and built with the intention of competing in next years LeMans 24 Hour race the Brabham BT62 racing car is now being produced as a road legal track day car for a couple of millionaire customers. Running a Ford based 5.4 litre V8 producing 700 BHP the car has a six speed sequential gearbox , race based ABS and traction control and comes with built in air jacks and a supply of both road legal wheels and tyres and racing wet tyres. It’s a big big car but is lighter than a Ford Fiesta ST! Cost £1.2 million. Cheaper but still blindingly fast is the New BMW M5 Competition. Lighter and faster with close to 600 BHP ad 4 wheel drive the car is expected to cost around £100,000. -

STARS OF THE STAGE When the World Rally Championship first began in 1973, only the car manufacturers fought for a crown; it wasn’t until 1979 that the drivers were recognised with their own world title. They soon made up for lost time, however, and over the past four decades the WRC has been a constant source of drama, heroism and displays of unbelievable skill. So as the Festival celebrates 40 years of the World Rally Drivers’ Championship this weekend, we remember some of those who have fought for and won the sport’s greatest prize STORY BY ANGUS FRAZER Left: Petter Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills celebrate victory in the 2002 Rally GB. Right: Sébastien Ogier powers his Citroën to third in the 2019 Argentine Rally Rallying’s first World Champion proved that while sublime skill and dogged determination are both prerequisites for victory, ruthlessness Björn is not. Described by those who knew him as a true gentleman (and sometimes as a teddy bear), the late Björn Waldegård won the inaugural World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1979 (prior to that, the competition had Waldegård been held for two years as an FIA ‘Cup for Drivers’, won by Sandro Munari in 1977 and Markku Alén in 1978). All through that season, Waldegård battled Hannu Mikkola, his team-mate not just at Ford in the pace-setting Escort RS but also at Mercedes-Benz. The German company had 1979 hired the duo to pilot the powerful if unwieldy 5.0-litre V8 automatic 450SLC Coupé on the Safari and Ivory Coast events. -

quattro® Highlights Technologies Models Emotions The Audi Rally quattro Superiority through permanent all-wheel drive. The idea of a rally car was every bit as old as the concept for the production car at Audi, originating in 1977. The Audi Mo- torsport Department was established the following year and entered rally racing with the front-wheel drive Audi 80. The first quattro ran as a course car in the European Champion ship series race in Portugal in 1980. In early 1981, the quattro cars swept over the rally scene like a force of nature. Local driver Franz Wittmann won the Janner Rally in Austria, which was not a World Championship race, in a Rally quattro by more than 20 minutes over the secondplace car. By 1982, the quattro was already virtually unbeatable anywhere in the world; Audi easily captured the Manufacturers’ Trophy with The Rally quattro used the same fivecylinder turbo as the pro seven victories. Mouton won in Portugal, Greece and Brazil; only duction car; the twovalve power unit developed a hearty 230 kW a breakdown in the penultimate race in the Ivory Coast cost her (roughly 310 hp) from 2.1 liters of displacement and 1.6 bar of the drivers’ title. However, Mikkola set the record straight in 1983 boost. Lightweight body components limited its weight to around after winning in Finland, Sweden, Argentina and Portugal. But I can add one that’s even more exciting (i.e., faster): a trip up the Col de Turini in the new 911 with Walter Röhrl. Th e Col de Turini is a pass in the Massif du Mercantour in the French Maritime Alps. But it’s much more than just a geographical location—it elicits a wealth of associations for racing buff s. No one could tell more authentically about this special leg of the Monte Carlo Rally than Röhrl, who won the rally four times. “Up to 30,000 people would be waiting for us up at the top of the pass. You would come speeding up over the last hump toward the pass and suddenly you’d be blinded by a wall of camera fl ashes. And the next second, you’d go hur- tling down the next side again on icy roads.” In the so-called Night of Turini—also known as the “Night of the Long Knives” due to the strong high-beam lights cutting through the night—in which race-car drivers have to navigate the Turini up to three times, the pressure on the lead driver is enormous. -

1977 Peugeot 504 Coupe Group 4 Classic Rally Car PRICE £80,000 ABOUT THIS CAR Rally Preparation Services is very pleased to offer for sale this fantastic Peugeot 504 Coupe Group 4 classic rally car originally commissioned by Peugeot ex-works team driver Jean-Pierre Nicolas for his own use in classic rallies. Peugeot built its first car well over a 100 years ago. Nowadays, Peugeot tends to be associated with small but worthy hatchbacks but of course this innovative manufacturer has a glorious motorsport pedigree. Perhaps it’s greatest days in rallying were with the all-conquering Group B 205 T16 but of course Peugeot built robust rally cars in the 60s and 70s and dominated African rallying. The tough 504 saloon was underpowered compared to the Escort and Stratos but campaigned by Peugeot successfully dominated events in Africa thanks to its solid engineering with names such as Hannu Mikkola, Timo Mäkinen, and the French 504-star himself, Jean-Pierre Nicolas. In 1976 the 504 Coupe was launched with the new 2.5 V6 motor delivering up to 250bhp. Outright rally victories immediately followed - in Morocco with Timo Mäkinen on The Ivory Coast (a rally so arduous that in 1972 there were no finishers.) Then Jean-Pierre Nicolas drove a 504 Coupe to wins both on the 1978 Ivory Coast Rallye and also the East African Safari – an event where Nicolas finished nearly 40 minutes ahead of his nearest rival demonstrating how good the coupe was. This very car was driven by World rally champion Bjorn Waldegard on the 2010 Morocco Historique before undergoing the transformation to a full Group 4 specification classic rally car. -

www.wheelswithinwales.uk Obituary: Hannu Mikkola 1942 – 2021 Published: 4th March 2021 Author: Ken Davies Online version: https://www.wheelswithinwales.uk/obituary-hannu-mikkola-1942-2021/ Finland’s Hannu Mikkola, who died on 26 February aged 78, was one of the most successful and versatile international rally drivers during a 31-year career in a variety of cars from Volvo PV544 to state-of-the-art Group B Audi S1 and a few others in between, writes Ken Davies. Born 24 May 1942 at Joensuu, Finland, like many Scandinavian drivers of his period, Hannu started competing in a Volvo PV544 but by the 1970s became associated with Ford, clinching the 1972 East African Safari Rally, not yet a WRC event, in an Escort RS. In 1974 he won his first championship rally, the daunting 1000 Lakes, again in an Escort. In www.wheelswithinwales.uk 1975 he triumphed in Morocco, co-driven by current FIA president Jean Todt, in a Peugeot 504, before winning another 1000 Lakes, this time at the wheel of his Toyota Corolla. In 1977 Hannu hooked-up with Swedish co-driver Arne Hertz and the duo was immediately successful in a partnership that would endure for 13 years, initially with his own team using Toyotas and Peugeots, and then in 1978 as a Ford works crew, winning the British Rally Championship in an Escort. In 1979 he made a serious challenge for the World Rally Championship title, ultimately While he was in the works Ford finishing runner-up, just one point behind Ford team, Hannu visited the Bridgend team-mate Björn Waldegård and in 1980 was Engine plant and stayed at the runner-up with Ford again to Röhrl’s Fiat.
