Teen Pregnancy and Media Engagement: a Uses and Gratifications Study TEEN PREGNANCY AND MEDIA ENGAGEMENT: A USES AND GRATIFICATIONS STUDY David Michael Strukel A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2016 Committee: Ewart Skinner, Advisor Priscilla K. Coleman, Graduate Faculty Representative Daniel Fasko Sandra Faulkner Monica Longmore Gi Woong Yun © 2015 David Strukel All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ewart Skinner, Advisor While teenage pregnancy has been on the decline, overall, since the 1970s, the frequency of teenage pregnancy in the United States is much higher than its incidence in other major industrialized countries. Furthermore, in the U.S., in certain instances and communities, teenage pregnancy has remained at unacceptable levels. This dissertation explores teenage pregnancy from the perspective of teenage mothers focusing on their relationship with the media throughout the process of their pregnancy and into motherhood. This study also takes into consideration the contextual factors that impact media usage such as the environment in which participants live in, socioeconomic status, family background, interaction with peers, and school, among other possible influences. The novel approach taken here is the use of qualitative interviews from the Uses and Gratifications perspective, and the employment of Grounded Theory analysis. The participant sample comprises 30 students a school for teenage mothers in the Midwest. No previous academic studies have examined the engagement pregnant teenagers have had with the media. However, several studies have examined teenagers’ exposure to sexual content on television and their subsequent sexual behavior. Research questions focus on how and when these young women find information pertaining to having a child before, during and after their pregnancy and their current engagement with the media. Responses among three groups of light, average, and heavy media usage show that pregnant teens and teen mothers usage of media was fairly consistent amongst the groups in terms of sharing progress of pregnancy and seeking health information about pregnancy online. Most of the teen mothers changed their attitude toward seeing sex in the media iv after having their baby. Several pregnant teens/teen mothers decreased their social media activity or deleted their social media accounts due to drama and bullying. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my advisor, Dr. Ewart Skinner, for his continued support and advice. I would also like to thank my outstanding committee. Dr. Priscilla Coleman, Dr. Daniel Fasko, Dr. Sandra Faulkner, Dr. Monica Longmore and Dr. Gi Woon Yun…you have been uplifting and inspiring. I thank you. A special mention of gratitude goes to Dr. Monica Longmore, who joined the committee after the comps defense and added a wealth of knowledge and expertise! Special thanks also goes to Dr. Sandra Faulkner for coming on board after the comps process and lending her expertise. Special thanks to my great friend, Dr. Shanda Gore, who said to me a few years ago, “Struke, you should do this! It will be worth it.” Also special thanks to another great friend, Rebecca Finzel Scharf, who often asked me how it was going and was a great sounding board for advice and support. I also would like to thank the many friends and colleagues who helped me along the way. That help came in the way of a word of encouragement, sharing a dinner, a phone call, or just being there to listen. It was greatly appreciated! Thank you to the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Toledo for paying for the $20 Kroger gift cards for each participant in the second round of interviews for this dissertation. Thank you to the administration, staff, and students who helped with this research. Thank you to Jingning Mei for the work on the graphs and charts. Thank you to Sriya Chattopadhyay for the editing. Thank you to my lovable little Scottish Terrier, Bonnie, who gave me a lot of relief from work when I needed it! Special thanks to my Mom, Mary Strukel, and my Dad, the late Dr. Frank Strukel. They have been there for me through everything. vi TABLE OF CONTENTS Page CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION……………………………………………………..... ................ 1 Statement of the problem We have athletes, scholars, theatre progressives, metal heads, and far too many more to write down in the little space I have. The point is that life is filled with different walks of life, and perhaps that’s what I en- joy most about the Kaleidoscope. Does Reality TV Induce Real Effects? On The Questionable Association between 16 And Pregnant and Teenage Childbearing November 2016 JEL No. J13, L82 ABSTRACT We reassess evidence that the MTV program 16 and Pregnant played a major role in reducing teen birth rates in the U.S. (Kearney and Levine, American Economic Review 2015). We find Kearney and Levine’s identification strategy to be problematic. Through a series of placebo and other tests, we show that the assumptions necessary for a causal interpretation of their results are not met.

  • Farrah Abraham Has Butt Implants? ‘Teen Mom’ Has Had ‘Significant Buttock Enhancement,’ Claims Surgeon
Farrah Abraham Has Butt Implants? ‘Teen Mom’ Has Had ‘Significant Buttock Enhancement,’ Claims Surgeon Inquisitor.com Farrah Abraham may have recently gone under the knife. According to a new report, a plastic surgeon believes the Teen Mom star’s backside is much larger now than it was when fans first met her in 2009. In an interview with Wetpaint Entertainment on February 25, Dr. Lyle Black, a Philadelphia- area plastic surgeon who has not operated on Farrah Abraham, claims she’s “most certainly” had work done. “[Farrah Abraham] has had significant buttock enhancement. Folks, this is no ‘allergic reaction!’ Previously, her buttocks were very flat, with almost no projection — the ‘booty’ part of the booty — and little definition along the banana zone (upper thigh just under the cheek), and flatness for what should be the sexy ‘smile’ of the buttock crease (from the deep inner thigh up and outward). All of these have been addressed with some serious additional ‘volume’ placed nicely into all the right places!” As for whether he believes Farrah Abraham received injections or implants, Dr. Black said there’s no way to be sure. However, when it comes to what he would recommend for a client of his own, he went with the injections. “Buttock implants are notorious for shifting in position, getting infected, or pressing uncomfortably on nerves, both short-term and long-term. After a brief recovery period, fat injections do not have any of these potential downsides.” In other Farrah Abraham news, the Teen Mom OG trailer was recently released, and in it, her co- stars are seen reacting to her return.

  • John Forbes's Poetry of Metaphysical Etiquette
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by The University of Sydney: Sydney eScholarship Journals online Instruction for an Ideal Australian: John Forbes’s Poetry of Metaphysical Etiquette DUNCAN HOSE University of Melbourne I want to approach the work of John Forbes as being exemplary of a process which combines mythography and mythopoesis, or the constant re-reading and re-writing of the myths one lives by. The articles of concern here are both the personal mythemes that are aggregated by the individual subject in the business of identity construction, and the mass of national mythic capital that continually circulates, wanting to displace difference and coax the subject into a kind of sentimental symbolic citizenship. Forbes took very seriously the poststructuralist revolutions in epistemology and ontology, and his poetry is characterized by an intense scepticism about the capacity of language to represent the world properly, and an allied cynicism toward the products of self- mythologising, preferring the hedonism, and in a strange way the anxiety, of the de- centred subject licensed by postmodernism. I want to read here a few of Forbes’s poems as a possible charter for a new metaphysics, and perhaps a new kind of old-fashioned etiquette. As the title of this paper suggests, there is often some haranguing quality in this poet’s work: one is always being upbraided, or at least addressed; it is immediately a social poetry that does not function as a model of Romantic self-calibration, or subscribe to the self as an economic or philosophical unit, except sarcastically.
