Minister for the Arts Parliament House SYDNEY NSW 2000 28 October 1994 Dear Mr Collins, The Archives Authority of New South Wales takes pleasure in forwarding, for presentation to Parliament in accordance with the provisions of the Annual Reports (Statutory Bodies) Act, 1984 and of the Archives Act, 1960, its thirty fourth Annual Report and Financial Statements, covering the year ended 30 June 1994. Minister for the Arts NEW SOUTH WALES Minister for the Arts The Archives Authority has managed not only to maintain but to increase, its revenue raising activities in 1994. Total revenue earned exceeded that of previous years. The Authority's financial operations now form an integral part of its corporate strategy. Profits generated by the Government Records Repository have largely funded construction of the Stage 3 extension to the Repository complex at Kingswood, which was officially opened on Monday 18 April, 1994. This new "state of the art" storage facility takes the Authority's total storage capacity to 160,000 linear metres. During the year strong emphasis continued to be placed on customer service initiatives and strategies to promote community awareness of the functions and services of the Authority, particularly the view that archives and good records management are vital to the activities of government and a key to accountability. A new corporate logo based on the infinity symbol, signifying the permanent and continuing nature of the work of the Authority, was also developed. February 1994 saw publication of the inaugural issue of For the Record: Managing Records in the New South Wales Public Sector, and in March the Authority republished, in a limited edition, Major T.L. Mitchell's Map of the Colony of New South Wales, 1834, from the original engraved copper plates. In addition, work began on development of standards and codes of best practice for the management of official records, in preparation for new archives legislation, and the General Records Disposal Schedule: Accounting Records, was completely revised. This schedule identifies permanently valuable accounting records for retention and provides for the continuing and timely destruction of the remainder, resulting in substantial cost savings to government agencies. I congratulate the Members of the Authority and the staff on their fine work, their commitment to quality archives and records services and on the achievement of successful results during 1994. Inlaid into a paper mount. Nd. but after 1590. £2,250 Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596) was the first English circumnavigator, and only the second after Magellan. His voyage extended British maritime power into the Pacific for the first time, threatened the Spanish empire in America to its heart, opened a new age in British seamanship, and made Drake a rich man. Sailing from Plymouth in December 1577, the expedition reached Patagonia in June 1578, weathered a near mutiny, and saw the second ship, the Elizabeth, turn back during the stormy passage through the Straits of Magellan. Drake sailed on alone in the Golden Hind, raiding Spanish commerce along the Pacific coast of the Americas, and culminated his piracy with the seizure of a major treasure galleon. This exploit allowed him to pay a 4600% dividend to his backers on returning to England. In 1579 he explored northward up the California coast, discovered San Francisco Bay, and went as far north as Vancouver. He then crossed the Pacific, took on a cargo of spices in the East Indies, and went home by the Cape of Good Hope, arriving back at Plymouth in September 1580.

Aboriginal persons mentioned: Native Police Trooper Kelly and Daylight, Nelly and Dinah. The letter dated December 10, 1859 also makes a brief reference to massacres at Mr Young's Station. The letter dated August 27, 1859 mentions that the Aboriginal women living at the Native Police camp “were frequently useful to us in discovering the haunts of some of the most notorious murderers”.     Title: The First School Teachers and Schools in Colonial New South Wales 1789-1810 Author: Geoffrey Burkhardt Abstract: The first stage of this project aims to identify the first school teachers in the colony of NSW during the period 1788-1810. Thirty men and women have been identified as having taught in a NSW school at least for one year during the period under review. Of these thirty a total of seventeen were discovered to have been convicts, four were missionaries, one was a soldier and the others were free emigrants. The three most significant people contributing to the establishment of schools in the infant colony during its first twenty years were Rev. Richard Johnson, the settlement’s first chaplain, Phillip Gidley King, founder and Lieutenant Governor of Norfolk Island (1788-1797) and later third Governor of NSW (1801-1808), and Rev. Samuel Marsden. Although no official provision was made for the inclusion of a schoolteacher among the government personnel in the First Fleet, nevertheless the Rev. Richard Johnson established the first school, thought to have been a “Dame School”. It is believed to have been established within eighteen months of the arrival of Governor Arthur Phillip’s Fleet in January 1788. The three most significant people contributing to the establishment of schools in the infant penal colony during the first twenty years were Rev. Richard Johnson, the settlement’s first chaplain, Phillip Gidley King, founder and Lieutenant Governor of Norfolk Island 1788-179 later the third Governor of NSW 1801-1808, and Rev. Samuel Marsden, who arrived in the Colony as Assistant to the Chaplain in 1794.
