TTITLE COVID-19 Situation Report SERIAL NUMBER 21 EPID-WEEK 20 DATE 13th May, 2020

Highlights

• No new case was reported; total number of confirmed COVID 19 cases as at 13th May, 2020 is 21 • Three (3) alerts reported were all investigated • 4 samples of suspected cases were taken. A total of 21 batched samples were sent to the NVRI laboratory • 34 Burial team members from all the burial grounds in , Yola South and the mortuaries were trained. • One patient in treatment center held some staff hostage

Epidemiological summary

As at 13th May 2020, 179 suspected cases have been reported, 21 were confirmed positive, 137 were negatives while 21 are still pending The confirmed cases were from (2), (8), Hong (2), (2), Yola North (2), Yola South (1), (3) and (1). Coordination:

• Daily coordination meeting holding at the State level • Operational challenges of EOC discussed with the Hon Commissioner of Health • The PM of RISE/USAID, the Incident Manager, NCDC team lead and the Quantity Surveyor of the SMOH were at the building designated as the PHEOC to take estimates for BOQ

Surveillance:

• Three (3) alerts reported were all investigated • Contact tracing is ongoing in LGAs with confirmed COVID 19 cases • Contact tracers in Lamurde, Numan and Hong trained on ODK for contact tracing

Case Management:

• 1 of the patients in the treatment centre who has been displaying some violent tendencies held a doctor hostage and contaminated the health workers safe area • Total patients on admission are 16 • All patients are in stable condition Infection Prevention and Control

• 34 Burial team members from all the burial grounds in Yola North, Yola South and the mortuaries were trained.

Risk Communication/Social Mobilization • Radio discussions/phone-in programmes addressing stigmatization, stereotyping and COVID-19 prevention awareness is ongoing • Ongoing daily broadcast of 25 jingles per day in Radio Nigeria Fombina FM, 30 jingles per day by Gotel Radio; 10 jingles per day by ABC Ratio, 5 jingles per day by Pulaako FM and 5 TV jingles per day in Adamawa State Television. Laboratory • Four (4) samples were taken today • 4 samples of suspected cases were taken. A total of 21 batched samples were sent to the NVRI laboratory POE • 63 almajiris from Zaria heading to Malabu in LGA were intercepted and sent back to Zaria because their documentation fell short of the expectation • 12 persons were screened in International boundaries across the State. 1 passenger of interest was quarantined for further investigation

Logistics • Commodities were issued to various pillars that needed supply from COVID 19 store at Specialist hospital • , Mubi North, Lamurde, Yola North LGA logistics pillars were contacted to give update on their stock position • 10 Non-contact infra-red thermometers were distributed to the POE, case management, and surveillance pillars

Challenges. • Safe area of health workers contaminated by a patient on admission who held the doctor on duty hostage • Difficulty in identifying contacts of confirmed cases who are said to be reluctant to present themselves for testing because of the stigma associated with COVID-19 • Decline in the number of suspected cases reported and of samples taken for testing

Next steps

• Advocate for the creation of environmental and engineering controls that will ensure separation between patients and health workers • Restrain the troublesome patient and arrange for evaluation of his mental state • Decontaminate the treatment center • Continue community engagement and agree on when and how patients can be evacuated
