During this time, we have raised over £60,0000 for SSAFA and highlighted the plight of the carers of so many ex-servicemen and women who don’t receive the recognition they should from the MoD and government. We hope that Johnnie Mercer the new Veterans Minister and the new Office for Veterans Affairs will address this issue and give more support to these people who make veterans and wounded soldiers lives bearable. It is a well documented fact that wounded soldiers recover more quickly and have a better standard of life with a carer from the family. The fact that my mother was found out cold on the floor of her home on January 1st 2012 with only her terrier Toby to keep her alive, puts the problem in perspective. I had expressed my concern for her safety whilst I was away in Scotland but was ignored. My father, the wounded veteran was safe and well in his care home in the Dementia Ward, whilst his carer of 63 years, my mother, now surplus to requirements, lay dying on a cold empty home of 60 years. She was taken to hospital and never went back to her home of 60 years, dying a year after my father in 2013. It is a common fact that carers die very soon after the people they have cared for, in my mother’s case 63 years. Many thanks to all our advertisers in this issue, the proceeds of which go to SSAFA. Your sincerely, Julian Nettlefold Editor, Battlespace Front cover: Courtesy of Jankel 4 News in Brief Arnold Defense launches their new MLHS high-capacity rocket launcher 04 Sep 19. History Garage Bills/Parts History Maintenance/Repair History Suppliers/Part Numbers/Description History Photos Panther Westwinds known as 'Panther' was founded in 1972 by Robert Jankel. The Panther company enjoyed success throughout the 1970s with retro-styled cars based on the mechanical components of standard production cars from other manufacturers. The Panther Lima body shells were manufactured in Fibreglass, by Industrial Marine Fibreglass (IMF), who were based on the Milber Industrial Estate, Newton Abbot, Devon. Notable examples included 1975's Panther Rio: based on the Triumph Dolomite, but appointed to "Rolls-Royce standards" — the cost of which was equivalent to three Triumph Dolomites. Another, and particularly unusual, model was the three-axled Panther 6. During the late 1970s the company was also engaged in developing a hovercraft using a pair of Honda Gold Wing, 1000cc motorcycle engines; one for the lift fan and one for the directional thrust fan. This was developed in some secrecy at the home of one of the directors of the company in a barn in Surrey with technical help at one point from a specialist race mechanic working for a Honda dealership in South London. Progress and development stopped when the company collapsed. The present location, or even existence, of the vehicle is unknown. The Panther Westwinds company collapsed in 1980 and was purchased by Young Chull Kim.

Call Number: Archival Collection 26 Quantity: 931 cubic feet (514 flat archival boxes, 98 clamshell boxes, 29 filing cabinets, 18 record center cartons, 15 glass plate boxes, 8 oversize boxes). Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order.

  • Newsletter –Autumn 2015
Winter 2015 Hon. Patron – Michael Aspel OBE Weybridge Memories: Peter’s Café By Louise Johncox Growing up in a tea shop means cakes hold memories for me. Some of these memories are happy, some sad, all are a reflection of my family life. My parents ran Peter’s in Weybridge from 1958 to 2000, where I grew up alongside my two older brothers and younger sister. All our lives were shaped by the traditional cakes our father made. It is one thing having a lot of cake memories, but when I decided to write a book, The Baker’s Daughter, what would be the best way to unlock all these memories? At first, I examined the old tea shop menu and drew up a list of the cakes and savouries, jotting down stories and anecdotes. I recalled certain customers by the name of their favourite pastries such as Mrs Meringue and Mrs Millefeuille. I visited my retired parents at the family home in Weybridge and asked them for any stories linked to the cakes and savouries. I also probed my siblings for their cake memories. My Mum, Frankie, a former nurse, married Dad in 1960, and they held their wedding reception in the tea room. At first, Mum was the most forthcoming with her recollections. The fact she was the welcoming face of the tea shop meant she had the most detailed knowledge of the customers who came in for their morning coffee, light lunch or afternoon tea (as the menu stated). Dad came from a long line of pastry chefs – his grandparents ran Beti’s in Ryde, Isle of Wight, and he grew up in his parents’ tea shop, Lane’s in Westcliff.

Three Paras killed in Afghanistan Story from BBC NEWS: Published: 2009/08/07 13:51:02 GMT Three Britsh soldiers understood to be working with special forces have been killed in southern Afghanistan. The servicemen, from the Parachute Regiment, died north of Lashkar Gah in Helmand province on Thursday afernoon. The three personnel were killed and a fourth was critcally injured when their Jackal armoured vehicle was hit by an explosion and small-arms fre. The soldiers' families have been told. A total of 195 Britsh troops have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001. The MoD said it was believed that the three soldiers died in the inital blast. The troops were carrying out a routne security patrol with Afghan natonal security forces. Colonel Richard Kemp, who served as commander of the Britsh army in Afghanistan in 2003, told the BBC: "These soldiers were from 1st Batalion Parachute Regiment which is, as is publicly known, the special forces' support group. "So they carry out support operatons for the special forces. They are not actually special forces themselves." Panther's Claw The 4x4 Jackal has been used in Afghanistan to ofer troops beter protecton than the more lightly armoured Snatch Land Rover, but there have stll been a number of fatalites involving the vehicle. July saw more casualtes than any other month for UK forces in Afghanistan, with 22 service personnel killed. Troops are now involved in the second stage of Operaton Panther's Claw, which the MoD says is focused on holding ground won from the Taliban in recent weeks.
