Abstract The Apostolic Order, a late medieval Italian mendicant order remains fundamentally little understood despite several centuries of research and writing devoted to their history. Much of the work done on the Apostolic Order (or Followers of Dolcino) has been focused on their leaders, taken as given the order’s heretical status, or presumed the marginalized status of those who supported the order. This thesis attempts to reconsider the order and its supporters by placing them as another mendicant order prior to the papal condemnation, and put forth the new perspective that the supporters were much like other medieval persons and became socially marginalized by the inquisitorial focus on the Apostolic Order. To support this theory, this thesis will compare the inquisitorial records of the Apostolic supporters found in Historia Fratris Dulcini Heresiarche and the Acta S. Officii Bononie—ab anon 1291 usque ad annum 1310 to those of another group of mendicants and supporters, the Beguins of Provence, which are found in Spirituali e Beghini in Provenza, Bernard Gui’s Le Livre des Sentences de L’inquisiteur Bernard Gui 1308-1323 , and the martyrology in Louisa Burnham’s So Great a Light, So Great a Smoke: The Beguin Heretics of Languedoc. These two groups of data were compared using statistical analysis and network and game theory, and the results were that 1) the groups were similar; 2) most differences could be reasonably explained by the objectives of respective inquisitions or length of persecution prior to the inquisition. That these two groups are comparable suggests that there are patterns in mendicant supporter membership exemplified by Franciscan tertiaries and that the supporters of the Apostolic Order fit this pattern. Preface As most of the individuals and locations sited in this work are drawn from inquisitorial documents, translation of subjects became an issue. In the following pages, the names that are commonly translated in the general body of works on the subject, and do not cause confusion in their translation, have been translated, such that some of their identities are returned to them. Therefore, most names such as Zachariah (Zaccaria), Rolandinus (Rolandino) and Damianus (Damiano) have been altered from the format they appeared in the inquisitorial depositions. In Appendix A, all witnesses are listed by the name that appears in the inquisitorial records in their tables, with the translated name in parentheses beside it. Names that are unclear by their translation such as Iacobina have been left in the format found in inquisitorial documents. Locations that have clear modern day translations have also been altered; ‘Mutina’ has become Modena, Sancta Elena is Sant’Elena. Finally, efforts have been made here to use place names from all but Rome in their original language—‘Trent’ is Trento, ‘Marseilles’ is Marseille.     Heretical Networks between East and West: The Case of the Fraticelli NICKIPHOROS I. TSOUGARAKIS Abstract: This article explores the links between the Franciscan heresy of the Fraticelli and the Latin territories of Greece, between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. It argues that the early involvement of Franciscan dissidents, like Angelo Clareno, with the lands of Latin Romania played an important role in the development of the Franciscan movement of dissent, on the one hand by allowing its enemies to associate them with the disobedient Greek Church and on the other by establishing safe havens where the dissidents were relatively safe from the persecution of the Inquisition and whence they were also able to send missionaries back to Italy to revive the movement there. In doing so, the article reviews all the known information about Fraticelli communities in Greece, and discovers two hitherto unknown references, proving that the sect continued to exist in Greece during the Ottoman period, thus outlasting the Fraticelli communities of Italy. The dissertation focuses on two central texts that are indicative of two distinct historical moments of the Protestant Reformation in England. Thomas More's Utopia was first published in Latin at Louvain in 1516, roughly one year before the publication of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses signaled the commencement of the Reformation on the Continent and roughly a decade before the Henrician Reformation in England. As a humanist text, Utopia contains themes pertinent to internal Church reform, while simultaneously warning polemicists and ecclesiastics to leave off their paltry squabbles over non-essential religious matters, lest the unity of the Church catholic be imperiled. More's engagement with the Holy Land is influenced by contemporary researches into the languages of that region, most notably the search for the original and perfect language spoken before the episode at Babel. As the confusion of tongues at Babel functions etiologically to account for the origin of all ideological conflict, it was thought that the rediscovery of the prima lingua might resolve all conflict.

People started to require an active, personal participation in religious life. The popularity of different heresies, the flourishing of popular movements on the borderline between heresy and acceptance, and finally, the foundation and development of the new mendicant orders, first of all the Dominicans and Franciscans, are all manifestations of this new model of religious life. At the beginning of the thirteenth century, with the foundation of the mendicant orders, a new form and ideal of sainthood was created for both men and women.2 By the time this model was formed we can record the double character of this ideal: together with Saint Francis, who was the most influential model, Saint Claire became the archetype for women who decided to follow a life dedicated to Christ. For the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries another characteristic woman figure appeared, Saint Catherine, who inspired the formation of the female model. In Central Europe a slightly different model was formed for women. The prototype of that female sainthood was Saint Elisabeth of Hungary. Hunter Abstract Scholars seeking to map the antecedents of Pentecostal distinctives in early Christendom turn to standard reference works expecting to find objective summaries of the writings of Church Fathers and Mothers. Apparently dismissing the diversity of the biblical canon itself, the writers of these reference works can be found manipulating patristic texts in ways which reinforce the notion that the Classical Pentecostal Movement is a historical aberration. This prejudice is evident in the selection of texts and how they are translated and indexed as well as the surgical removal of pertinent sections of the original texts. This problem can be set right only by extensive reading of the original sources in the original languages. The writings of Irenaeus shed considerable light on the place of Pentecostal thought for histories that seek to be international and ecumenical. Introduction I began advanced study of classical Pentecostal distinctives at Fuller Theological Seminary in the early 1970s. Among those offering good advice was the then academic dean of Vanguard University in nearby Costa Mesa, California, Russell P. Spittler. While working on a patristic project, Spittler emphasized the need for me to engage J. Quasten and like scholars. More recently I utilized Quasten et al in dialogue with William Henn in a paper presented to the International Roman Catholic - Pentecostal Dialogue which convened July 23-29, 1999 in Venice, Italy. What follows is the substance of the paper delivered at that meeting.i The most influential editions of Church Fathers and Mothers available in the 20th Century suffered from inadequate translation of key passages.

    RegioneLombordia Comune di Esine Settore Trasparenza e Cultura Servizio biblioteche e beni librari e documentari Una “libraria” nel turbine della Storia: Giansenismo, Classicismo e Risorgimento nella Biblioteca Parrocchiale di Esine Introduzione di Ugo Spini Catalogo e note a cura di Vittorio Volpi Milano, 1996 Premessa La pubblicazione del catalogo della Biblioteca parrocchiale di Esine (BS) si inse- risce efficacemente nell’ambito degli interventi promossi dal Servizio Biblioteche e beni librari e documentari della Regione Lombardia volti a diffondere la conoscenza del pa- trimonio documentario delle biblioteche lombarde. La raccolta libraria descritta consta di 1219 opere stampate prevalentemente nei secoli XVIII e soprattutto XIX; la maggior parte dei volumi risultano essere appartenuti – come testimoniato da note di possesso e postille manoscritte - ai religiosi che a vario titolo ebbero rapporti con la Parrocchia di Esine fra Settecento e Ottocento. Il fondo ne rispec- chia dunque i diversificati interessi culturali che emblematicamente si intrecciano e si saldano con le fasi salienti dello sviluppo della storia e dell’evoluzione del pensiero. Il pa- trimonio documentario disponibile presso la Biblioteca parrocchiale può così essere oggetto di differenti “chiavi di lettura” a seconda che si soffermi l’attenzione sul contenuto delle pubblicazioni piuttosto che sulle caratteristiche editoriali degli stampati o si intenda in- vece approfondire la ricerca nell’ambito della storia locale. Il catalogo qui pubblicato - curato da Vittorio Volpi - è il risultato del lavoro di catalogazione intrapreso alcuni anni fa, finanziato dal Comune di Esine. Contiene le descrizioni delle opere appartenenti alla Biblioteca parrocchiale nel formato standard ISBD, con intestazioni secondo RICA e riporta con particolare ampiezza e dettaglio le note relative all’esemplare.

It observes the development of the cult as part of the renovations of the church during the pontificate of Nicholas IV and the patronage of the Colonna family. It argues that it happened during the process of Franciscanization of the church and making the ideological axis between the Roman basilica and new papal basilica in Assisi, stressed also in their pictorial decorations – the mosaics in the apse in Rome, and the Life of Saint Francis in Assisi.
