Metaphorical Meaning of Coldplay’s Song Lyrics. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Sanata Dharma University, 2015. Metaphoric expressions have been so familiar in people’s daily life. They are found in almost every aspects of life such as spoken language, written language, language in advertisement, or even in the literature field. Texts of the literature fields which often use metaphoric expression are song lyrics. They have a purpose to add aesthetic value or to invite listener’s imagination, but unfortunately, they sometimes cause confusion in defining the meaning of the lyrics. This is caused by metaphoric expressions which are used to carry another meaning of the word. The purpose of this study is to see the metaphoric meaning behind several Coldplay’s song lyrics. This study analyzes and answers two problems: the classifications of metaphors which are used in the lyrics and the meaning of those metaphoric expressions influenced by those classifications. In order to define the meaning of metaphoric expressions in the lyrics, this research uses semantics approach. It is divided into two parts, lexical semantics is used to define the dictionary meaning of the metaphoric expression, while metaphor analysis is used to define the metaphorical meaning of it. Both of them are completed with semantic properties to give the characteristics of metaphoric expression. The study takes nineteen parts of lyrics which contain metaphoric expression as the data. As Coldplay’s songs mostly used free metaphoric expression made by song writer’s creativity, but there were also some dead metaphor which were found in the form of idioms, this study concludes that the classifications of metaphors are dead metaphor and live metaphor. This study also concludes that the metaphorical meaning are different in each part of lyrics depend on the context of the song, and the certainty of the meanings were also influenced by the classifications. The metaphorical meaning are mostly used to describe a person or to express feeling. After knowing the metaphorical meaning, this research is aimed to give clearer meaning of several Coldplay’s songs and listeners are able to use this strategy in order to define metaphoric expression’s meaning. xi PLAGIATPLAGIAT MERUPAKAN MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TIDAK TERPUJI TERPUJI ABSTRAK SYLVIA, MARIA MAYA. Metaphorical Meaning of Coldplay’s Song Lyrics. Yogyakarta: Program Studi Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Sanata Dharma, 2015.

  • Concert Review: Beethoven Meets Coldplay, Indianapolis On
( + CONCERT REVIEW: BEETHOVEN MEETS COLDPLAY BY: CAVAN MCGINSIE “Coldplay explores, through their music and lyrics, universal themes such as doubt, fear, hope and love; many would assert that, out of any composer, Beethoven most directly and strikingly addresses these themes.” It is with this thought in mind that Steve Hackman sat down to compose his orchestral piece, “Coldplay V. Beethoven.” It was the perfect piece for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Happy Hour series. The Happy Hour is being utilized to bring the ostensibly sophisticated symphony to a younger, inexperienced crowd. This past Thursday’s Happy Hour marked the 5th anniversary of the affair — which is the brainchild of Steve Hackman and artists-in-residence, Time For Three — and it was evident that the event is effective. PHOTO CREDIT: CAVAN MCGINSIE Looking around the ornate, expansive lobby of the Hilbert Circle Theatre (home to the ISO since 1984,) I saw young, old, male, female, blue collar, white collar, pink collar, maybe even some teal and gold collars. The packed room was ebullient as everyone moved around one another, chatting over plastic cups filled with Shellback Rum & Coke, Stella Artois, Prairie Vodka Cucumber Cocktails, and red, red wine. Seeing the mass, buzzing around in anticipation for the sold- out event, it was hard to believe we nearly lost the ISO in 2012. It was a major improvement from my first experience with the Happy Hour series back in 2010, where the crowd was quite lacking. Despite the small crowd, the show, even at its conception, had been exhilarating for me. I had high hopes as I made my way to my seat.
