ATR/100.4 The Deacon as Wise Fool: A Pastoral Persona for the Diaconate Kevin J. McGrane* Deacons often sit with the hurt and marginalized. It is in keeping with our ordination vows as deacons in the Episcopal Church, which say, “God now calls you to a special ministry of servanthood. You are to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely.”1 Ever task focused, deacons look for the tangible and concrete things we can do to respond to the needs of the least of Jesus’ broth- ers and sisters (Matt. 25:40). But once the food is served, the money given, the medicine dispensed, then what? The material needs are supplied, but the hurt and the trauma are still very much present. What kind of pastoral care can deacons bring that will respond to the needs of the hurting and traumatized? I suggest that, if we as deacons are going to be sources of contin- ued pastoral care beyond being simple providers of material needs, we need to look to the pastoral model of the wise fool for guidance. With some exceptions here and there, deacons are uniquely fit to practice the pastoral persona of the wise fool. The wise fool is a clinical pastoral persona most identified and de- veloped by the pastoral theologians Alastair V. Campbell and Donald Capps. The fool is an archetype in human culture that both Campbell and Capps view as someone capable of rendering pastoral care. In his essay “The Wise Fool,”2 Campbell describes the fool as a “necessary figure” to counterpoint human arrogance, pomposity, and despo- tism: “His unruly behavior questions the limits of order; his ‘crazy’ outspoken talk probes the meaning of ‘common sense’; his uncon- ventional appearance exposes the pride and vanity of those around * Kevin J. -

Interview with Gayle LaJoye Interviewed by Philip MFulks 116 Ridge St. Marquette, Michigan 4.22.1981 Start of interview (P) Mr. LaJoye what is your profession? (G) Well I worked as a clown for the circuses and now I’m working as a clown on stage, pretty much doing instead of circus clowning I’m doing clowning which is more indicative to the stage and has a greater structure. There’s a lot of difference in both types of clowning. (P) I see. So then you are working independently rather than with a circus or anything like that? (G) Yes I’m trying to do shows on a college circuit and nightclubs and things like that. But I’m trying to take the clowning from the circus which was more a popular entertainment thing but yet it’s still an art form into more of a serious theater piece where it has a beginning middle and an end. (P) How did you become involved with clowning? (G) I was involved with theater at Northern Michigan University and I tried doing a few things around in school and found that I had a pretty good ability for acting and I got involved in theater and I worked in a few of the play and got real good support from the public and my teachers. And I decided that I wanted to instead of going on into the university, I was getting kind of tired college so I decided to maybe go into a professional field, more like popular entertainment and try and take classes while I was doing and move into acting in either a large city or whatever areas I had go to do that. -

PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY E-ISSN 2237-2660 Misfitness: the hermeneutics of failure and the poetics of the clown – Heidegger and clowns Marcelo BeréI IUniversity of London – London, United Kingdom ABSTRACT – Misfitness: the hermeneutics of failure and the poetics of the clown – Heidegger and clowns – The article presents some Heideggerian ideas applied to the art of clowning. Four principles of practice of the clown’s art are analysed in the light of misfitness – a concept based on the clown’s ability not to fit into theatrical, cinematic and social conventions, thus creating a language of his own. In an ontological approach, this article seeks to examine what it means to be a clown-in-the-world. Following a Heideggerian principle, the clown is analysed here taking into account his artistic praxis; a clown is what a clown does: this is the basic principle of clown poetics. The conclusion proposes a look at the clown’s way of thinking – which is here called misfit logic – and shows the hermeneutics of failure, where the logic of success becomes questionable. Woodstock & the Circus
LOCAL HISTORY WOODSTOCK & MCHENRY COUNTY Woodstock and the Circus by Kirk Dawdy Soon after its establishment in 1852 Woodstock became a consistent destination for circus shows. Several different outfits visited Woodstock over the years, including the Burr Robbins, Forepaugh, Cole, W.B. Reynolds, Gollmar Brothers, Ringling Brothers and Barnum circuses. The first documented circus in Woodstock was “Yankee” Robinson’s Quadruple Show in October of 1856. Robinson, a direct descendant of Pastor John Robinson, religious leader of the "Pilgrim Fathers" who journeyed to North America aboard the Mayflower, established his first travelling circus in 1854, two years prior to visiting Woodstock. An ardent abolitionist, Robinson included in his circuses minstrel shows based on Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 book Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In fact, Robinson was the very first to ever take a dramatized version of Uncle Tom’s Cabin on the road. In “Yankee” Robinson’s 1856 Woodstock visit, in addition to presenting a band of African-American minstrels performing in a production of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, he also exhibited live animals (including an elephant), a museum of curiosities, Dilly Fay the Shanghai Clown and Miss Paintero, a ‘Creole Lady’ who made a grand ascension on a 400 foot tightrope to the very top of the circus tent. Also advertised for “Yankee’s” visit was a grand parade around the Woodstock square. Circus parades were a crowd favorite and staple for all other circuses that visited Woodstock, weather permitting. Feeling his name sounded too foreign, especially during the anti-immigrant sentiments of the mid-1850s, Fayette Lodawick Robinson adopted the professional name “Yankee”. -

There is considerable anthropological importance and research within the study of spectacle and circus. However, there is a limited amount of academic literature pertaining to the linguistics and semiotics of circus. Through participant observation and interviewing, of both circus and non-circus individuals, data will be acquired and analyzed. Further research will provide background information of both types of circuses. Results indicate that an individual's preference can be determined based on the linguistic and semiotic terms used when describing the circus. Introduction Throughout my life, I have always been intrigued by the circus. As a result, I joined the Gamma Phi Circus, here at Illinois State University, in order to obtain a better understanding of circus in our culture. A brief explanation of the title is useful in understanding my paper. I chose the title "Through the 'Front Door' to the 'Backyard'" because "front door" is circus lingo for the doors that a person goes through on entering the tent. The word "backyard" refers to the area in which behind the tent where all the people in the production of the circus park their trailers. This title encompasses the range of information that I have gathered from performers, to directors, to audience members. -

REVISITING THE ETYMOLOGY OF ZANNI Anna Moro It has long been maintained that the etymology of zani, zanni – the servant or buffoon of the commedia dell’arte – is a northern Italian variant of the proper noun Giovanni, or its shortened form, Gianni. In Tommaseo and Bellini’s Dizionario della lingua italiana , published in Turin between 1865 and 1879, it is stated that the term is “voce bergamasca, accorciata dall’intero nome Giovanni, che rappresenta un Servo semplice e goffo bergamasco.” 1 Tommaseo and Bellini’s explanation of the origin of the term is basically what is found in modern etymological dictionaries, such as Battisti and Alessio’s Dizionario etimologico italiano (DEI) and Cortelazzo and Zolli’s Dizionario etimologico della lingua italiana (DELI). The earliest attestation of the term appears to be the 15th century, according to Battisti and Alessio, but a precise reference is not given. 16th century attestations of zani / zanni corresponding to the servant character of the commedia dell’arte , of course, abound. There is no doubt that the term zani was widely used in the 16th century in Italy to designate the servant character of the commedia dell’arte ; and it is during the 16th century that the term spread outside of Italy: it is found in French, for example, as zani from 1550, and in English, as zany , later in the century (Migliorini 1983: 426).
