Fleming, 1822 is an eupulmonate slug genus with a wide distribution in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Currently, nine species are considered as valid. However, molecular data indicate cryptic speciation and more species involved. Here, we present results on a new species found in the Persian Gulf, a subtropical region with harsh conditions such as elevated salinity and high temperature compared to the Indian Ocean. Peronia persiae sp. nov. is described based on molecular, histological, anatomical, micro-computer tomography and scanning electron microscopy data. ABGD, GMYC and bPTP analyses based on 16S rDNA and cytochrome oxidase I (COI) sequences of Peronia confirm the delimitation of the new species. Moreover, our 14 specimens were carefully compared with available information of other described Peronia species. Peronia persiae sp. nov. is distinct in a combination of characters, including differences in the genital (ampulla, prostate, penial hooks, penial needle) and digestive systems (lack of pharyngeal wall teeth, tooth shape in radula, intestine of type II). -

Asset Saltmarsh and Samphire Description Areas of saline, mineral-rich, organic-rich, and low oxygen coastal soils within and above high tide level, often fronted by mangroves, and backed by saltbush shrubland. Saltmarsh supports various salt-tolerant plants, with samphires being the most common and significant in terms of cover in South Australia. There are distinct assemblages of salt-tolerant invertebrates associated with saltmarsh habitats. Saltmarshes provide habitat for fishes, including juveniles of species which utilise other marine habitats, and are an important feeding area for various bird species, including migratory shore birds. González, MafaldaAdditional information Freitas and is available Paulo at Henriques the end of the chapter Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.71614 Abstract In this review article, the authors explore a broad spectrum of subjects associated to marine snails of the genus Phorcus Risso, 1826, namely, distribution, habitat, behaviour and life history traits, and the consequences of anthropological impacts, such as fisheries, pollution, and climate changes, on these species. This work focuses on discussing the ecological importance of these sentinel species and their interactions in the rocky shores as well as the anthropogenic impacts to which they are subjected. One of the main anthro- pogenic stresses that affect Phorcus species is fisheries. Topshell harvesting is recognized as occurring since prehistoric times and has evolved through time from a subsistence to commercial exploitation level. However, there is a gap of information concerning these species that hinders stock assessment and management required for sustainable exploi- tation. Additionally, these keystone species are useful tools in assessing coastal habitat quality, due to their eco-biological features. Contamination of these species with heavy metals carries serious risk for animal and human health due to their potential of biomag- nification in the food chain. -

It has always been my conviction that the spasmodic and haphazard collecting so far undertaken has not exhausted the molluscan species to be found in the deeper waters of South- eastern Australia. Only two large single collections have been made; first by the vessel " Challenger " in 1874 at Station 162 off East Moncoeur Island in 38 fathoms. These collections were described in the " Challenger " reports by Rev. Boog. Watson (Gastropoda) and E. A. Smith (Pelecypoda). In the latter was included a description of a shell Thracia watsoni not since taken in Victoria though dredged by Mr. David Howlett off St. Francis Island, South Australia. In 1910 the F. I. S. " Endeavour " made a number of hauls both north and south of Gabo Island and off Cape Everard. The u results of this collecting can be found in the Endeavour " reports. T. Iredale, 1924, published the results of shore and dredging collections made by Roy Bell. Since this time continued haphazard collecting has been carried out mostly as a hobby by trawler fishermen either for their own interest or on behalf of interested friends. Although some of this material has reached the hands of competent workers, over the years the recording of new species has probably been delayed. -

KULKARNI Department of Zoology, Institute of Science, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India ABSTRACT In India, Maharashtra state has a coastline of 720 km having all types of shores. Most of the available Reports are on macrobenthos diversity on coast of Maharashtra. It is mainly focused on diversity of mollusc like gastropod and pelecypoda. However, meagre data is available on diversity of Pulmonata gastropod on coast of Maharashtra. Due to such encroachment and reclamation, a species displacement has been reported on coast of Konkan. In recent years urbanization and industrialization in coastal belt of Konkan has resulted into modifications of topography of these areas. Present work on assessing diversity of Onchidium species on coast of Uran has been recorded three species of Onchidium. O. verruculatum, O. peronii, Platevindex species. The present investigation is the first report on diversity of Onchidium species on the coast of Uran. KEYWORDS: Diversity, O. verruculatum, O. peronii, Platevindex species INTRODUCTION Census of Marine Life (www.coml.org) programme proved that oceans have great diversity of life. 33 out of 34 major phyla are represented in the ocean, whereas only 15 phyla’s are presented on the land. Census of Marine Life also proved that every niche in marine ecosystem is occupied by the life. Although every oceanic country has participated in an international project of Census of Marine Life, a little attention has been paid on coast of India to measure the diversity of marine life.
