BIOGRAPHY Jonathan Latimer, journalist, screen writer and detective story author was born October 23, 1906 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the Mesa Ranch School in Arizona from 1922-1925 and later studied at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1929. In the same year he began his career as a writer at the Chicago Herald Examiner and later wrote for the Chicago Tribune. Working as a police reporter and "rewrite man," Latimer covered stories in the gangster world through the early 1930s, and met notorious crime figures including Al Capone. After writing an article about Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes, Latimer was hired as a ghost writer for the Department of the Interior. During the time Latimer worked as a ghost writer for Ickes, he began the first of his series of mystery novels. His first novel, Murder in a Madhouse, became a 1935 best-seller and introduced Bill Crane, the hard-drinking detective and hero of five of Latimer's novels. After serving in the U.S. Navy between 1942 and 1945, Latimer became a successful Hollywood screenwriter, producing scripts for such movies as "Lady in the Morgue," "Topper Returns," and the "Glass Key," as well as ten films directed by John Farrow. Latimer later wrote television scripts for forty-five episodes of the "Perry Mason" show, 1960-1965. Latimer also wrote ten episodes for the "Markham" series and about twenty television specials. • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

  • The Audie Murphy National Fan Club
January 26, 1995 Dear Club Member, Welcome to our maiden newsletter. The first thing I’d like to bring to your attention is the subject of a stamp honoring Audie Murphy. For nearly a year I have labored to convince the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp in his honor. All of us are stunned by the Post Office’s lack of interest, yet they can justify stamps for Coach Bear Bryant, Wyatt Earp and now Richard Nixon! It seems that their guidelines of “historical interest” and “national perspective” apply only when they wish it to or when it justifies a money maker for them. Stamp decisions are apparently guided by politics and tainted money. Is it not embarrassing to our government that the countries of Sierra Leone and Guyana have issued stamps in honor of Audie Murphy? Such a U.S. stamp is long over due and more than deserving. It is vital that each of you write your respective senators and representatives and urge them to write the postmaster general on your behalf. At the same time, please send a personal letter expressing your views to: Postmaster General of the United States United States Postal Service 475 L’Enfant Plaza, S.W. Washington, D.C. 20260-0010 One reason for the Postal Service’s avoidance of this subject is the possibility of opening a Pandora’s Box. Allowing a stamp for one Medal of Honor recipient might cause others to champion their favorite. To avoid this, the Post Office issued, on June 7, 1983, their 20 cent stamp with all three Medals of Honor thereby paying symbolic tribute to all 3,400 recipients.

  • Post-War America, the Hollywood Left and the Problem with Film Noir
Re-examining the Maladjusted Text: Post-war America, the Hollywood Left and the Problem with Film Noir Robert John Manning PhD Thesis University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies October 2015 “This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution.” Re-examining the Maladjusted Text: Post-war America, the Hollywood Left and the Problem with Film Noir Film noir is a term created after fact and applied back to films from a previous period and studies have often conflated very different films and privileged some facets over others in an endeavour to structure a definition. Some scholars have identified that a relatively small group of films came to be seen by the Hollywood Left as highly significant; and that their discussions of these films were the products of deeper anxieties faced by this group in the immediate post-war period. Subsequent conclusions were made that the Hollywood Left was opposed to this generalised categorisation similar to contemporary understandings of film noir. The thesis examines those films now considered as film noir in their original contexts. Studying the reception of films generally considered to be representative of contemporary understandings of film noir, such as Boomerang (Elia Kazan, 1947) The Big Sleep (Howard Hawks, 1946) and Crossfire (Edward Dmytryk, 1947) shows how they were parts of very different cycles at the time and not seen critically as a homogeneous group.
