  • The Black Tent
The Black Tent (1956) and Bengazi (1955): The Image of Arabs in Two Post-Empire Journeys into the Deserts of Libya Richard Andrew Voeltz [email protected] Cameron University Volume 7.1 (2018) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2018.200 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract These two little known films are both part of the cycle of post-imperial films dealing with the decline of the British Empire. They are perhaps the only films set in or near the historical period of the British Military Administration of Libya after 1945. The Black Tent frequently gets lumped in with the genre of World War II British war films. Bengazi marks the cinematic journey of the actor Victor McLaglen from The Lost Patrol (1934) to Bengazi (1955), his career encapsulating the beginning and end of the Hollywood British Empire film genre. Both films contain redemptive dramatic journeys into the deserts of Libya involving the loss of British imperial male power. The case studies of The Black Tent and Bengazi show the beginnings of new post-empire film genres and new mentalities toward the Arab “Other” that partially promotes a decolonization of western cinema. The Black Tent (1956) and Bengazi (1955): The Image of Arabs in Two Post-Empire Journeys into the Deserts of Libya Richard Andrew Voeltz The Black Tent (1956, British) and Bengazi (1955, American) are perhaps the only feature films set in the last days of the British Military Administration of Libya from 1945 to 1951.

  • Complete Film Noir
COMPLETE FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1965) Page 1 of 18 CONSENSUS FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1959) (1960-1965) dThe idea for a COMPLETE FILM NOIR LIST came to me when I realized that I was “wearing out” a then recently purchased copy of the Film Noir Encyclopedia, 3rd edition. My initial plan was to make just a list of the titles listed in this reference so I could better plan my film noir viewing on AMC (American Movie Classics). Realizing that this plan was going to take some keyboard time, I thought of doing a search on the Internet Movie DataBase (here after referred to as the IMDB). By using the extended search with selected criteria, I could produce a list for importing to a text editor. Since that initial list was compiled almost twenty years ago, I have added additional reference sources, marked titles released on NTSC laserdisc and NTSC Region 1 DVD formats. When a close friend complained about the length of the list as it passed 600 titles, the idea of producing a subset list of CONSENSUS FILM NOIR was born. Several years ago, a DVD producer wrote me as follows: “I'd caution you not to put too much faith in the film noir guides, since it's not as if there's some Film Noir Licensing Board that reviews films and hands out Certificates of Authenticity. The authors of those books are just people, limited by their own knowledge of and access to films for review, so guidebooks on noir are naturally weighted towards the more readily available studio pictures, like Double Indemnity or Kiss Me Deadly or The Big Sleep, since the many low-budget B noirs from indie producers or overseas have mostly fallen into obscurity.” There is truth in what the producer says, but if writers of (film noir) guides haven’t seen the films, what chance does an ordinary enthusiast have.

  • The Hollywood Political Thriller During the Cold War, 1945
The Hollywood Political Thriller During the Cold War, 1945 - 1962 Submitted by Deena Bowman to the University of Exeter as a Thesis for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film Studies, December 2014 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The past four years have presented enumerable challenges, but my family and friends have remained by my side, helping me to move forward. Thanks go to the University of Exeter for providing me an opportunity to pursue my love of film and history. To Dr. Tomas Williams and Dr. Gábor Gergely for stimulating conversations over dinner and football. Sincere thanks go to Professor William Higbee for agreeing to supervise me in the final days of this project. Lastly, I am forever grateful to Professor Susan Hayward, a mentor and friend. 3 ABSTRACT This thesis investigates a corpus of films identifiable as Hollywood political thrillers during the Cold War spanning a period of seventeen years, between 1945 and 1962. It aims to dispel the assertion by critics and scholars that the political thriller originates with the release of The Manchurian Candidate (Frankenheimer, 1962). Moreover, it is my intent to engage an interdisciplinary approach given that the relationship between contemporary American cinema, ideology and propaganda has often been overlooked (see Shaw, 2007).

  • Thrill of the Nordic Kill-August2014
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Southern Denmark Research Output The Thrill of the Nordic Kill: The Manhunt Movie in the Nordic Thriller By Rikke Schubart Please quote as: Rikke Schubart. “The Thrill of the Nordic Kill: The Manhunt Movie in the Nordic Thriller,” chapter in Nordic Genre Film, eds. Tommy Gustafsson and Pietari Kääpä. Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, forthcoming Spring 2015. 1 The Thrill of the Nordic Kill: The Manhunt Movie in the Nordic Thriller (6139 words) “This world’s divided into two kinds of people: The hunter and the hunted,” big-game hunter Rainsford says in The Most Dangerous Game (1932) and self-assured continues, “Luckily, I’m a hunter. Nothing can ever change that.” Well, he will discover that in the manhunt movie even the hunter can become prey. The manhunt movie is a subgenre of the Hollywood thriller which joins two elements: big-game sport hunting and hunting humans. Sport hunting stirs up themes of nature and culture, morals and ethics, masculinity, and, finally, civilization. Here, we will ask what happens when the subgenre is used in the Nordic thriller. The chapter has three aims: First, it establishes the central generic traits of the manhunt movie. Second, it sets up a theoretical framework of sociobiological and ecological theories with hunting as a reference point. And, third, it examines the Nordic version of the manhunt movie focusing on the themes of hunting, nature, social standing, and civilization. I look at the Danish drama The Hunt (2012, Thomas Vinterberg), the Norwegian thriller-heist-comedy Headhunters (2011, Morten Tyldum), and the Swedish thrillers The Hunters (Jägarna, 1996) and False Trail (Jägarna 2, 2011) by Kjell Sundvall.1 The Manhunt Movie Since I cannot claim extensive knowledge of manhunt movies I will approach the subgenre with modesty.
