Τhe wordly Ilias Apostolou left his Mathematic studies and MBA behind when he first got involved with the creation of Degustation, ten years ago. “My father was a chef, so I’ve been surrounded by food my whole life,” says Ilias Apostolou, who was born in Australia and came to Greece in 2001. “The idea for the shop was simple, but extremely difficult to implement: to seek out the best products in Greece and from around the world.” The jewel of a shop boasts caviar from the Caspian Sea, wild salmon from Alaska, deli meats and cheese from England, France and Italy, pasta and sauces, as well as fresh bread.

Over 1,800 products are crammed on the shelves and in the refrigerators at Degustation. “I didn’t want to merely fill the displays, I wanted to find the very best.” The decision to abandon his career in business for Degustation indicates that it was a very conscious one, as at the time, delicatessens hadn’t yet taken off in Greece. Ο χάρτης της πόλης, και ειδικά με την οικονομική κρίση, αλλάζει και το Τυροκο- μείο Κωσταρέλος αποτελεί το νέο στολίδι στο Κολωνάκι. O Κυριάκος Κωσταρέ- λος μαζί με τον αδερφό του, Νίκο, είναι η τρίτη γενιά της οικογένειας που ασχο- λείται με την τυροκομία. «Θυμάμαι τον παππού να ετοιμάζει γιαούρτι και τη γιαγιά ρυζόγαλο, για να κεράσουν τους πελάτες στο ταβερνάκι τους», το οποίο μετα- τράπηκε σε κατάστημα που διέθετε τα γαλακτοκομικά και τυροκομικά προϊό- ντα τους. Έπειτα, άνοιξαν κι άλλα καταστήματα, προστέθηκαν επιλεγμένα προ- ϊόντα άλλων παραγωγών.

The map of the city is continually changing, particularly in times of financial cri- sis, and the Kostarelos Cheese Shop is the new treasure in Kolonaki. Kyriakos Kostarelos and his brother Nikos are the third generation of their family to work in cheese making. “I remember my grandfather and grandmother pre- paring yoghurt and rice pudding to treat customers at their little tavern,” says Kyriakos Kostarelos. The tavern became a shop selling their dairy and cheese products. Afterwards, they opened other shops, and added selected products from other producers.

A year ago, amid the challenges imposed by capital controls, they managed to open this deli in the heart of Kolonaki, a new business model, extrovert and proud of the family history. All their goodies are available: sheep and goat yoghurt, one-of-a-kind feta matured for 12 months, puddings, rice pudding, Gruyere, Kefalotyri (a sharp Greek cheese) and their distinctive melipasto cheese. You will find excellent deli meats and products from small Greek pro- ducers, including olive oil, legumes, pasta, vinegars and crunchy rusks. A few small tables are placed in front of the feta barrels, where visitors can enjoy original recipes prepared with their products.

“We like to see the smiles on our customers' faces.” And customers have every reason to smile: from coffee and Greek beer to the menu, which was refined by renowned chef Chrysanthos Karamolegos, to the service and the feeling that hard work and passion produces a wonderful result.

With an inspired name and a solid business concept, Filippos Exadaktylos turned his back on his career as an executive in Greek companies, and armed with his experience abroad, he welcomes us to his shop on Irodotou street, which is the first foray into retail for a business that has been active in the production of homemade biscuits with the taste of Crete for the past six years.

“Biscuits, sweets and salted snacks are created in Heraklion based on our own recipes that are traditional with a twist.” Delicious and mouth-watering, crispy on the outside and tender inside, these biscuits with unique flavours and un- expected combinations fill the display cases of Eat Crete: wine biscuits, cheese bites, olive rusks, beetroot biscuits, sugar-free grape must rusks with honey, carob and goji berry cookies. The range is complemented with Cretan pasta, raisins, olives, wine (Douloufakis winery), and sun-dried tomatoes –with air travel packaging available.

The idea was born from a love for the island. “Crete is an island with an excep- tional climate and incredible places to visit.
