800.275.2840 MORE NEWS» insideradio.com THE MOST TRUSTED NEWS IN RADIO FRIDAY, JULY 24, 2015 Voltair Stations Say ‘We’re Keeping It.’ Despite Nielsen’s plans to update its PPM encoders, programmers at Voltair-equipped stations say they have no plans to unplug the infamous audio processor any time soon. “I question whether anybody will turn their Voltair off—even after Nielsen puts its enhancements in place,” says one programmer at a station that is said to be using one. “Nobody wants to lose anything.” Speaking anonymously, numerous programmers have claimed to see ratings gains after plugging in the mystery box, which is said to increase the likelihood of Nielsen’s audio watermarks being received by its ratings meters. On Tuesday, Nielsen said it would increase PPM code density and amplification in the fourth quarter as part of its continuous improvement initiative. But in a ratings-compressed market, where even a minor increase or decrease in ratings can have a significant impact on revenue, stations appear reluctant to part with their $15,000 Voltair investment. “I don’t think anyone wants to be left on the sidelines when there is two-tenths to a half share on the table that potentially isn’t being picked up,” the programmer said. “I see the issue as unchanged.” The Voltair code-altering setting can be set as high as 24. Programmers who share their own sort of Voltair best practices say they set it at 20 to get the encoding benefits without introducing what Nielsen has termed “audible artifacts.” “A setting of 20 seems to be the consensus point in the industry,” the programmer said, adding that Nielsen Audio predecessor Arbitron set watermark density and amplification levels at a modest level.

  • September 11, 2011, 7Pm Meymandi Concert Hall Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts Raleigh, Nc
A memorial to the events of 9/11 by the people of North Carolina September 11, 2011, 7pm Meymandi Concert Hall progress energy center for the performing arts raleigh, nc Presented in cooperation with: Personal Reflections on September 11, 2001 There are few events in human history that galvanize the whole world through their sheer awfulness. Those of September 11, 2001, were just such events. We each have our story of that day, and mine is not very remarkable, program except for its geographical proximity to those events. Having flown into Boston, Massachusetts, on September 10 on American Airlines, I felt too close for comfort to all that happened. “Comfort” was not a word in anyone’s vocabulary for months following that date. I was to have commenced my duties as musical director of the Handel and Haydn Society the following day in rehearsal for a performance of Haydn’s oratorio The Creation just as we were witnessing the most wicked acts of wanton destruction in New York and Washington, D.C. Haydn’s masterpiece actually begins with a Representation of Chaos which is chilling in its wordless musical effect. However, we felt that music’s power to soothe was more important at that time and so, as now, turned to Mozart. The Ave verum corpus, written some six months before his own death, beautifully captures the utter pathos of human mortality. But it is through the music of the Requiem that we fully explore the depth and breadth of human emotion. Just as 9/11 affected us all, this music speaks to each and every one with a message that is both personal and universal.

THE CURTIS MEDIA STORY 1968—2008 To longtime BMI shareholder and North Carolina broadcasting legend Don Curtis Congratulations on the 40th anniversary of Curtis Media Group and thank you for your strong support of our songwriters and music publishers. Your Friends at BMI® WELCOME Dear Friends and Partners, It is with great pleasure—and no small measure of humility—that I present to you “Live and Local, The Curtis Media Story,” commemorating four decades of service to the radio listeners of North Carolina. Inside this keepsake publication, you’ll learn much about our rich history while, at the same time, getting to know some of our fabulous people and, of course, Don Curtis himself. Also included are comprehensive descriptions of our radio stations and Internet companies plus some very memorable photo archives. I find it almost inconceivable that Don Curtis founded this company the very same year I entered high school. To this day, Don is an energetic and passionate visionary, who I consider a good friend and contemporary. It rarely occurs to me that he was well on his way to becoming one of our industry’s most respected op- erators while I was still dreaming of becoming a big-time deejay. Thank goodness he stuck with his plan, and I abandoned mine! These last six years have been among the most rewarding of my career. Don Curtis fosters an environment of creativity, community service and a competitive spirit. I’m grateful he’s allowed me to assemble a team that’s among the most talented and dedicated in all of commercial radio and, in return, we never, ever take our indepen- dence for granted.
