PROGRAM NOTES In these days of rising costs and reduced budgets, many opera compa nies across the United States are including musical theatre and operetta in their repertoire. Opera singers are being required to act, speak dialogue, and sometimes even dance in these popular productions. At the same time, the ranks of Broadway performers now include a number of crossover art ists: singers who have trained in opera and who are equally comfortable in both opera and musical theatre. Tonight's scenes program consists of scenes from operas and musicals which reflect the classwork from Opera Workshop I and II from the fall semester. In order to prepare our students for the professional world, we require first year Opera Workshop students to master the waltz, to learn a basic physical warmup, and to work on scenes from musical theatre. Sec ond year students have the option of choosing their own scenes from either opera or musical theatre, in English or a foreign language, and they have the added responsibility ofpreparing the scenes on their own outside of class, then presenting them to the class for critique and refinement. After this scenes program is concluded, Opera Workshop I will begin work on preparing auditions: arias, songs, and monologues. The students will par ticipate in .a mock audition and receive feedback from a panel of judges who are from Houston's professional opera and theatre communities. Opera Workshop II students will receive private coachings on arias which they will present to the public on April 25 here at the Wortham Opera Theatre. ALL EARS!! The Litchfield Fund Weekly Newsletter “We just don’t hear it on the street, we have our ears spread across all the fields!!!!!” In the calendar of Charlemagne, September was known as the Harvest Month. For ancient Britons, it was Barley Month, the crop ready for harvest. It was in September that Columbus departed the Canary Islands, the last stop before crossing the Atlantic & landing in the West Indies. In September, the Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom, departed Britain for the New World. September is the beginning of meteorological autumn & as we have seen this year, the peak of hurricane season is in early September. September is back to school month, the kick-off of football season at all levels & the thrill of tight baseball pennant races! See You in September: This 1966 #3 Billboard hit for The Happenings was written by Sid Wayne & Sherman Edwards. They were part of a songwriting group that was located in the Brill Building in Tin Pan Alley. The group included no less than Hal David, Burt Bacharach, Bobby Darin, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond, Gerry Goffin & Carole King. Mr. Wayne wrote many of the songs that were featured in Elvis Presley’s movies, partnering with other songwriters like Mr. Edwards, Ben Weisman & Abner Silver. Mr. Edwards wrote some early songs for Mr. Presley, but as the legend has it, walked out of songwriting session because of the demands of Mr. Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Saying he was tired of Rock’n’Roll, Mr. Edwards did not know what he would do next! But on March 16, 1969 a play, with songs written by Mr.

With Cabin in the Sky, composer Vernon Duke, lyricist John La Touche, and librettist Lynn Root set out to celebrate African American achievement in music and dance, and created a wonderfully integrated score that blends hits like “Taking a Chance on Love” with authentic traditional gospel numbers and full-fledged modern dance pieces. • The South African Who Wrote the English Lyrics for 'Les Miserables' Talks to Marianne Gray in London HERBERT Kretzmer Has Ve
The South African who wrote the English lyrics for ‘Les Miserables’ talks to Marianne Gray in London HERBERT Kretzmer has very little to be miserable about. Apart from living a fascinating life, which started in Kroonstad then went via Paris and New York to London, he also wrote the English lyrics for Les Miserables, the world’s longest-running musical, which is now coming out as an all-star film. For the film, he has written the lyrics for an additional song, Suddenly, which has been nominated for an Oscar as Best Original Song. We meet in his elegant townhouse in Kensington, London, to talk about the film of the musical which is based on Victor Hugo’s novel set in 19th-century France. The musical has been running worldwide for 27 years, has been seen by 60 million people and shows no signs of flagging. The film stars two Australian leading men —Russell Crowe as the relentless Inspector Javert and Hugh Jackman as the hunted ex convict Jean Valjean — and the gorgeous Anne Hathaway as the hapless Fantine, mother of Cosette, who sells her hair to raise money. Hathaway actually had her beautiful long hair shorn to the scalp during one of the movie’s possibly most emotional sequences. Kretzmer only went on set twice during the shoot. He says he is now a “spare wheel”. “Nobody wants a writer round once his work is done,” he laughs. “He’s just being a tourist.” At 87, and with an OBE (Order of the British Empire), a chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and an honorary doctorate from Rhodes University (which he dropped out of when a student), he still is totally on the ball as he chats, in a soft South African accent, about his extraordinary life.
