The perfect family holiday by the sea Telfed Israel www.telfed.org.il Pesach 2020 3

Greetings from our Chairman As we approach Pesach, the festival of freedom, we celebrate together as Jews living freely in a democratic, independent Jewish State. We tend to take this for granted, but recent events should remind us of the fragility of life. We live freely as Jews in our home country but are still surrounded by growing anti-semistism In Europe and continued rocket attacks in the south of the country. We live in a modern, advanced society yet nd ourselves at the mercy of a worldwide outbreak of a new u virus and raging wild res in Australia. These all remind us of just how delicate the balance of life can be on our planet and this de nitely includes our environment which we also tend to take for granted. In this edition of our magazine we chose to explore the topic of sustainability in Israel and how we should and can make a dierence to the environment. Our Olim are making exciting contributions in dierent elds such as environment friendly construction, recycling, sustainable gardening, solar power and beach clean ups. We are proud to share these stories with you and also encourage you to read and learn more about the various initiatives in Israel. Sustenance is de ned as ‘strengthening or supporting something mentally or physically’ and I truly believe this represents our role in Telfed. With our remarkable and unique sta and volunteers we continue to welcome, support and strengthen the Southern African and Australian communities in Israel. At the end of the day, this is our home and we should not take it for granted. Taking an active role to build, strengthen and ‘keep it clean’ is something we should be doing all the time - not just at Pesach.

Wishing you all a Chag Sameach Batya Shmukler

We need YOU.. Will you join us in spreading communal smiles this Pesach?

SA Youth Movements - the catalyst for Aliyah

NETZER- My journey to Israel I basically grew up in what was then Maginim, and became a madrich at the age of 16. A lot of our programme was about Zionism, creating a positive view on Israel and promoting Aliyah. I remember my rst camp very clearly: one day there was a huge party (tekes) marking the Aliyah of a group of older madrichim. There was a sense of wonderment and pride as these were our role models and they had chosen to live in Israel. I still see them now that I am in Israel and wonder if they knew how their Aliyah inuenced my own. When I was chosen to go to Israel on Machon, it was very exciting. I was given an opportunity to see and experience Israel myself. Again, Machon’s programme focused on highlighting the best of Israel. Throughout the programme, we explored Israel’s history, the people, the land, and her strengths and weaknesses. The more I learned, the more I fell in love with Israel and knew that this would become my home. I felt a particular connection to the Arava valley, which I consider my spiritual home in Israel. I have chosen to make Beer Sheva my home. I love Israel, warts and all, and know that this was the right decision for me. I am grateful to Netzer for opening my eyes and guiding me to Israel. As a rule of thumb, the water should be heated for 30 minutes per person. In the 1950s, high fuel prices and exorbitant electricity prices motivated Israeli inventor, Levi Yissar, to nd a solution to heating water. Using a resource that Israel has in abundance, sunshine, his sun-heated water tank (or dud shemesh) took shape. The dud shemesh became more ecient with the addition of Dr Harry Zvi Tavor’s ‘selective black surfaces’ technology. By law, all homes are required to have a dud shemesh. In 2007, over 90% of Israeli homes were using this environmentally-friendly and cost-eective heating mechanism. As a result, it is estimated that Israel saves two million barrels of oil each year. Helpful hint: consider installing a timer on your dud shemesh. Telfed Israel www.telfed.org.il Pesach 2020 33 פינה של עברית מבית אולפן לעניין Hebrew Column by Ulpan La-Inyan’s Daily Dose of Hebrew

Hayley Sevitz Varenberg z”l 35-year-old Hayley Varenberg was killed in the 947 bus crash on the rst night of Chanukah. She was on her way to a gathering of her husband Eli’s family when the bus she was on swerved drastically from its path and crashed into a bus stop, killing her and three other passengers. I remember Hayley from our student days. The only two Jewish students on our campus, we were both studying to become teachers. We had come from a Jewish world into a very secular one, and we reacted so dierently to the challenge. I would talk about being Jewish, answering questions and debating, I wore my badge loudly, if that makes sense, ready on my soapbox. But Hayley really lived her Judaism, quietly and determinedly. She was modest, kind, considerate and non-judgmental. She was comfortable with being a Jewess. Younger than me but wise beyond her years. The world is truly poorer not having her in it. In a tribute sent to the CJC, her parents, Alan and Pauline Sevitz, wrote the following: “The tragic passing of our beloved Hayley has left a massive void in our family. Hayley came into her own in the eleven years since she made Aliyah, facing life challenges courageously and with a smile. Having sat shiva in Israel we were privileged to learn about her dedication to her shul community, and to the boys high school where she taught. Her mentoring, kindness and warm personality touched so many people.” Hayley is survived by her husband Eli, parents Alan and Pauline, siblings Belinda, Ariella and Joshua, uncle Aubrey, nieces and nephew . Abridged obituary, originally published in the Cape Jewish Chronicle. Lindy Diamond Hayley was a member of Telfed's Jerusalem Regional Committee.
