Ashton was created when the Oregon Short Line Railroad decided to use an 1881 survey for the tracks to West Yellowstone. Ashton was named for William Ashton who was the chief engineer of the Oregon Short Line Railroad. On February 14, 1906 the residents had a huge party celebrating the arrival of the railroad. When the village had 200 residents, and requirements were satisfied, the Village of Ashton was incorporated on July 11, 1906.

Mesa Falls Scenic Byway The Mesa Falls Scenic Byway was established in 1989. Traveling on State Highway 47 from Ashton, the Byway provides motorists with a breathtaking view of the Teton Mountain Range emphasized by the Grand Teton Peaks. The route continues along the Henrys Fork of the Snake River to its confluence with Warm River and Robinson Creek where a viewing platform allows visitors to feed fish in the stream.
