On a separate sheet of paper, write out the following at least one time each. - John Steinbeck was born in Salinas. California on Feb. 27, 1902. He was the only son of John Ernest and Olive Steinbeck, and he was spoiled by his three sisters. - His mother was a school teacher who inspired him to become a writer by reading great literature to him. She was puritanical and ambitious. Although she loved him, John never felt as though he measured up to her standards. - His father was a failed businessman and a low level public servant. He was cold and distant to his son. - During high school, he played sports, and worked at different jobs. Observing nature was always something he enjoyed. - From 1920 to 1925, he attended Standford University. During that time, he continued to write and held many jobs such as digging ditches and washing dishes. He never graduated from college. - In 1930, he married Carol Henning. - In 1933, while he was at the bedside of his dying mother, he began writing The Red Pony. - The Depression had a great influence on him, and he traveled a great deal. When he was preparing to write a book, he often lived and worked with his subjects 1 - In 1943, he divorced and married Gwyn Conger. They had two sons - Thom and John. - During World War II, he was a special war correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune. - In 1948, he divorced. - In 1950, he married Elaine Anderson Scott who survived him. - He won both the Nobel Prize for literature and the Pulitzer Prize for The Grapes of Wrath. - He died on Dec. 20, 1968.
