Introductory Note
Introductory Note: Section 58 of the New Zealand Superannuation and Retirement Income Act 2001 requires that the Guardians must invest the Fund on a prudent, commercial basis, and in a manner consistent with best-practice portfolio management. The Guardians have determined that this requires broad diversification of investments. The Fund’s investment strategy includes holding investments benchmarked to global market indices. On 30 June 2011, the Fund’s portfolio held over 6000 listed companies, providing diversification across most of the world’s countries and industries. The Table below sets out our direct exposure to listed companies, by country of exposure. Country of exposure is defined as location of the ultimate global parent's place of incorporation, except in the case of tax haven countries, where we instead look to the place of business for the headquarters of the ultimate global parent. The Fund also has indirect exposure to other companies through total return swaps linked to market indices and through investment in pooled funds. As the Fund increases in value, both the number of securities and the average size of each holding tend to increase.
