  • Plan of Management for Andrew Lysaght Park and That the Park Continues to Be Maintained As a Rest Park
Andrew Lysaght Park Plan of Management PLAN OF MANAGEMENT FOR ANDREW LYSAGHT PARK Adopted 16 DECEMBER 2002 Wollongong City Council 1 Andrew Lysaght Park Plan of Management INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background Andrew Lysaght Park is a unique and special public place. It was originally part of a Roman Catholic Cemetery, with burials being recorded between 1830 and 1914. As Wollongong’s oldest burial ground it is the resting-place of some of the city’s pioneering families. First created as a direct result of the Old Roman Catholic Cemetery, Crown Street, Wollongong Act, 1969, Andrew Lysaght Park is Crown land dedicated as a public park and is required to be maintained by the trustee, Wollongong City Council, as a rest park. Council redeveloped the Park as a foreshore plaza and raised terrace in 1998, in conjunction with the construction of the Wollongong Entertainment Centre building. Its rest park status was acknowledged through the display of headstones and other memorials from the former cemetery, together with a number of pieces of public art in the southern end of the park. It was intended that the site function as a key urban space between the foreshore and the Wollongong Entertainment Centre complex. Andrew Lysaght Park has recently been under a number of development pressures associated with the adjoining WIN Stadium and the Entertainment Centre. Community concerns in regard to the impact of these developments on the Park and more specifically burial sites has resulted in significant community debate and the enactment of the Wollongong Sportsground and Old Roman Catholic Cemetery Legislation Amendment (Transfer of Land) Bill 2001.

The latter was compiled in a relatively short 18 month period between 1988 and 1989, and since then a great deal of new material has been discovered, with more undoubtedly yet to be unearthed of relevance to this study. As a result the present document contains material of a similar nature to that in the 1990 work, with an added emphasis on items from the period 1850 to 1900. Also included are bibliographic references which bring up to date those contained in the previous work. All told, some 1000 pages of primary sources and references to published works are now available on the Illawarra and South Coast Aborigines for the approximate period 1770 to 1900, though an attempt has been made to include items from this century which outline some of the history of the central Illawarra and Shoalhaven Aboriginal communities.

The Dhurga were fisherfolk and through the ages they would gather to assess the seas and the weather before setting off. The oj b of the lookout who remained there was to signal those on the water and on the beach below about the location and direction of sea mammals and shoals of fish. Such lookout posts exist also at Hill 60 at Port Kembla and up and down the South Coast, and it is from them that people observed the passage of James Cook’s ship in 1770. One of them told her granddaughter Coomee, who died at Ulladulla in 1914, all about “the first time the white birds came by”. During the vessel’s slow northward movement along the South Coast over eight days, heavy surf at Bulli Beach prevented a provisioning party from getting ashore on 28 April.
