Pešić: 1 March 2019 │ Published online: 2 March 2019. The list of Cossidae (Lepidoptera) Burundi is presented for the first time, including 12 species from 6 genera of 3 subfamilies. For the first time, 11 species are cited for Burundi. Cossidae (Lepidoptera) are a family including more than 1200 valid species, widespread almost all over the world (except high latitudes) (van Nieukerken et al. 2011; Yakovlev 2011). Equatorial Africa is one of the endemism and species diversity centers of Cossidae (Yakovlev 2015). The Cossidae fauna of Africa is still insufficiently studied. Relatively complete faunistic reviews have been published only on a few countries (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa) (Yakovlev & Lenz 2013; Yakovlev & Murphy 2013; Yakovlev 2014; Mey 2015, 2016). Carpenter moths of Burundi are completely unexplored. In the literature there is an only indication of the faunal findings of this family representatives on the territory of this country (Yakovlev & Witt 2017). Examining the materials on the genus Azygophleps Hampson, 1892 (type species − Hepialis scalaris Fabricius, 1775), we have described a new species, Azygophleps junkeri Yakovlev & Witt, 2017 (Type locality − Angola, prov. Benguela, btw Cutembo & Caluquembe, 14 km E Cutembo, 13º46.901′S / 14º00.105′E). The type series also includes materials from other African countries (Malawi, Tanzania, Congo, Namibia), including Burundi (2 ♂ (paratypes), Burundi, Gitega, 20.v.1965, leg. Dr. M. Fontaine). Small collections on Burundi were examined in the Royal Museum of Central Africa, Tervuren, Belgium. The collections were performed in two localities: Gitega (or Kitega) [3°26′S / 29°54′E]; Usumbura [now Bujumbura, 3°23′S / 29°22′E]. Thus, 12 species from 6 genera of three Cossidae subfamilies (Cossinae, Zeuzerinae, Politzariellinae) have been found on the territory of Burundi. Of course, this list is not final, new research should reveal at least 10 Cossidae species in the fauna of Burundi. No endemic species has been found. As expected, the core of the fauna are the complexes of the Central African species: Mirocossus haritonovi Yakovlev, 2011, Azygophleps albovittata Bethune-Baker, 1908, Azygophleps boisduvalli (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854), Holcoceroides ferrugineotincta Strand, [1913] and more common East Central African species: Brachylia reussi (Strand, 1913), Strigocossus moderata (Walker, 1856), Strigocossus ochricosta (Fletcher, 1968), Strigocossus tandoensis (Bethune-Baker, 1927), and Azygophleps junkeri Yakovlev & Witt, 2017. Acknowledgements The authors express their gratitude to their colleagues: Didier Van den Spiegel, Alice Buset, Jurate and Willy De Prins, Wolfram Mey, Geoff Martin, Axel Hausmann, and Joel Minet for the allowing us to examine the Cossidae material at the NHMUK, MNHN, RMCA, ZSM, and MNKB.
