The ANU Library Colour a collection series showcases our special and rare collections by using historical material in an unusual and creative way, whilst also offering students an outlet to relax and practice mindfulness. This colouring book features selected manga by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), Japanese artist and wood block printmaker from the Edo period, widely known for creating the iconic print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Throughout Hokusai’s life, he had limited contact with the wider world, as Japan had closed borders until the late 1850s. When the borders of Japan opened for the first time in 200 years, Hokusai’s prints were exported in large numbers, initiating Western interest in Japanese manga and influencing styles of Chinese painting and art outside of Japan. The Hokusai Manga, meaning ‘Hokusai’s Sketches’ from the ANU Library Rare Book Collection is a set of ten volumes published between 1814–1878. The style of Hokusai’s Manga is not the continuous storytelling manga that we see today, but rather individual sketches of landscapes, flora, fauna, spirits and everyday life, some reflect a touch of humour. While some historians begin their narrative as far back as the twelfth century with examples of art that might be classified as “pre-manga ,” some academics choose to cite the start point manga ’s timeline in the nineteenth century with the first usage of the term “ manga .” Others researchers are even more conservative, beginning their scope of manga ’s history with the techniques developed during the mid-twentieth century which yield artwork recognizable to today’s aesthetics. The study of manga is still in an embryonic state, and the scope of this genre of art is vast; these two factors create a challenge in establishing a timeline for manga ’s history. Although it would be convenient to consider the history of Japanese illustrative art as a timeline that leads directly to modern manga , the myriad of genres and styles complicate the researcher’s ability to make claims about the pertinence of any specific point on that timeline to the development of manga as it is known today.

Hokusai is not only popular in Japan but also in the West.1 Hokusai had many changes in his artistic style, which he signified by changing his artist name numerous times.2 This study will research how he represented it in Ehon Saishiki Tsū. We will answer this question by examine the book through a discourse analysis. Hokusai is useful material for studying the self-advertisements of style by an artist as there is an abundance of sources which make statements about Hokusai. Čiurlionis and His Contemporaries 85 DOI: 10.1515/ijas-2015-0005 YUMIKO NUNOKAWA KAUNAS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Infl uence of Japonisme on Art of M. K. Čiurlionis and His Contemporaries Abstract: The aim of this paper is to show how Japonisme was introduced to Europe in the late 19th century and how it infl uenced artists in major cities. Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e), especially those of Hokusai and Hiroshige, fascinated the Impressionists and other contemporaries such as Claude Monet (1840-1926), Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), and James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). Many of them adopted japonaiserie motifs in their paintings or sculptures, and it formed a major artistic trend called Japonisme. The Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911) was also infl uenced by the trend of Japonisme, especially from the paintings of the Impressionists or through artists in Poland. In Poland and Russia, Japanese artworks were imported by artists who had studied abroad, or by wealthy bourgeoisie such as Feliks “Manggha” Jasieński (1861-1929), a Polish collector whose nickname was directly associated with Japonisme, and Sergey Kitaev (1864-1927), an ardent Russian collector of Japanese artworks. In this article, Japonisme in European art in general will be outlined, together with similar tendencies in Čiurlionis’ paintings, and then, examples of Japonisme-infl uenced paintings in Poland and Russia will be briefl y shown. Serie orientale Vol. 56 – Giugno 2020 An Analysis of Some Illustrated Books by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) in the Museum of Oriental Art in Venice Silvia Vesco Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italia Abstract The collection of Japanese prints, albums and illustrated books (ehon) in the Museum of Oriental Art in Venice is the result of the last stop in Japan of a journey to the Far East of Prince Henry Bourbon-Parma, Count of Bardi and his wife Adelgunde of Bragança, during the years 1887-1889. The gathering of more than thirty thousand objects became the core of the present collection. Among these there are about 500 il- lustrated books of famous ukiyoe masters, surimono, and colour prints nishikie. The crea- tion of catalogue entries in Japanese and Italian and the analysis of each print reveals an amazing quantity of unpublished ukiyoe masterpieces and allows a division into different groups according to the subject matter. At the same time, this distinction into different genres shows an interesting tendency in the formation of the collection together with a possible new classification of the prints themselves. This study aims to shed a new light on this particular collection while focusing on a series of illustrated books by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1848). Among these the famous volumes of the Manga, the illustrated books on warriors, an unusual album with some prints from the One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji and a selection from the five volumes dedicated to teach the artisans how to draw all kind of decorations.

Certain identity themes emerged through a Lacanian interpretation using a qualitative/interpretivist paradigm. Data collection relied primarily on semi-structured, in-depth interviews with participants, and included their cosplay photos as well as their manga drawings and stories. Specifically, Lacan’s concepts of the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real were used to interpret these participants’ identities. The study showed not only that identity is not always determined by the Symbolic (conscious act), but also that it is governed by unconscious desire and fantasy (of the Real). While unconscious desire (Real) continues to break the fixibility of identity, the Symbolic remains an oppressed ruling Other that determines which identity is positive and which negative. The Imaginary is a most important outlet in terms of identity building for the subject, the freedom to make changes, and the power to heal one’s fixity against change (provide hope) in light of the Other’s gaze. Some of Lacan’s concepts—gaze, fantasy, desire/lack, camouflage—are also discussed by way of explaining identity-related themes.

This publication discusses the phenomenon of HM and its place in the context of Japanese picture books. Was it a drawing manual or comic cartoons or perhaps a pictorial encyclopedia? What are the historical meanings and etymology of the word manga? The special attention is devoted to the principles of compilation of HM and to the ways of organization of the compositional unity of its volumes. This research offers a major revision of the textual nature of this famous, yet insufficiently studied, masterpiece. Contrary to the common belief that HM is a chaotic jumble of random disjointed pictures, every volume is actually composed as a sophisticated whole with the help of elaborate schemata deeply imbedded in the traditional Japanese ways of textual organization. TEXT TRANSLATIONS To Special Exhibition Gallery 3 2 1 PLAN OF THE FOYER LIFE IN EDO X RUSSEL WONG IN KYOTO 1 Ukiyo-e Ukiyo-e – “pictures of the floating world” – is a genre of Japanese painting, printmaking, and book illustration that originated in the Edo period (1603–1868). Popular in its own time, the work of ukiyo-e artists is now exhibited across Japan and around the world. These works show Edo period city-dwellers in all aspects of life. “Floating” describes the constantly varying subject matter of these printed pictures. But those woodblock prints were also “fleeting” in the literal sense, as they were printed on paper, and meant as media conveying current information, thus of short- lived relevance. Wide range of subjects These prints had a practical function – as fliers, theatre playbills, posters, or invitations. They documented and popularised scenic vistas, famous landmarks, and popular travel destinations. Kabuki actors, courtesans, and geisha were popular subjects. Teahouses, gourment food, famous regional products, pets and exotic animals, gardening, and seasonal festivals can be seen in the prints. This diversity reflected Edo’s growing economic vitality and increased consumer spending on leisure, shopping, and other pleasurable pursuits – including viewing and purchasing ukiyo-e prints. 2 Meet the artists In the Edo period, the audience for ukiyo-e prints was mostly the common people. Ukiyo artists were expected to anticipate trends and always stay a step ahead of what was in style. Brilliant talents emerged, generation after generation to meet those demands, in what seems an almost miraculous phenomenon, from the perspective of Japanese art history.
