PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017 President’s report – Australasian Carnivorous Plant Society Inc. It is hard to believe an entire year has elapsed since the last time I wrote ‘my piece’ in this newsletter. In my opinion, the Society has enjoyed a very exciting and busy year…. just ask any member of the Committee and you will be told so! We are now meeting in the much more spacious and comfortable ‘Music Room’ in the Woodstock Community Centre which aside from the pleasant ambience, accommodates our increased attendance with some provision for future growth. Many thanks to Kirk for the timely communication with Burwood City Council. It is fitting and proper to acknowledge the Society’s hard-working Committee, for their combined efforts in realising the ideals of the A.C.P.S. Inc. All members of the Committee have contributed, each contributing their gifts to areas of their expertise. Jeremy Aitken has assumed the important role of Events Coordinator. This new role was long overdue and the Committee is very grateful for Jeremy’s enthusiasm. A look at the Society’s Webpage will also enable you to see the Youtube recording made by Jeremy of Stewart McPherson’s June 2017 ‘Drosera of the World’ Australian book launch. Dave Colbourn is to be commended for his many initiatives such as the Society’s involvement with the Royal Agricultural Society at the Royal Easter Show. This event alone enables thousands of Show visitors to be exposed to the wonders of Carnivorous plants. In addition, the upcoming publication detailing all known native and exotic C.ps growing wild in the Sydney and Blue Mountains areas will also be a first. The Society’s monthly newsletter Carniflora News continues to provide up-to-date news of events and cultivation tips for members’ benefit. Marina Chong as Website Manager works quietly behind the scenes to ensure the Society’s Webpage and Blog site are working and accessible to members and visitors alike. The Society is indebted to Marina for the know-how and ‘can do’ attitude she brings to this important aspect of communication. Attendees at meetings are also indebted to Marina for the refreshments she brings to each meeting. Robert Gibson is to be complimented for the Society’s excellent Carniflora Australis journal. Each attractive edition is packed with informative text, maps, keys and photographs which add so much to members’ knowledge of C.ps in the wild and under cultivation. Please feel free to contribute articles for publication via the Society’s webpage or e-mail address. Copy is always appreciated! Kirk ‘Fuzzy’ Hirsch works very hard as Treasurer and Membership Secretary to ensure the Society’s finances remain in the black. Aside from ensuring the membership database is kept current and new members receive all relevant communications, Kirk also assumes the onerous role of calculating sales proceeds to members selling at designated A.C.P.S. Inc. events plus commissions payable to the Society. Furthermore, Kirk’s flair at presenting the ‘Plant of the Month’ segment at monthly meetings is now legendary! Page 3! Brent Jones and Alan Haase are to be congratulated for their pioneering efforts to launch and nurture the Brisbane Chapter of the A.C.P.S. Inc. Although regular attendees’ numbers are modest, we are confident over time for growth in numbers. These gentlemen have periodically graced the Sydney meetings with their presence. Keep up the good work! Glen Moss continues to be a willing worker assisting behind the scenes in managing the Facebook page and tasks as varied as resolving issues regarding Australia Post and the Society’s P.O. Box, purchasing a marquee and signage for the Society’s use at events to clearing alien C.P.s from the Royal National Park. Glen is a true ‘all-rounder’. Our Facebook page now has more than 1800 followers and has proven to be a great way to “advertise” the Society around the globe and be a point of contact for our younger members. Finally, Ian Woolf needs to be thanked for his contribution as Seed Bank Manager. This position is important not least for fund-raising, but also ensuring rare and unusual C.p. seeds are available at very modest costs to members. Most of the seeds offered for sale are grown by locals and are therefore known to be ‘tried and true’. Members are visitors are encouraged to make full use of the Seed Bank, both through donation and purchase of seeds. Few gardening highs are as memorable as watching a plant’s growth from germination to flowering. The Committee does not exist for itself, but to ensure the Society can function for the wider membership. To this end, all members of the Committee value members’ constructive feedback, initiatives and assistance at meetings, shows and other events. From time-to- time rosters will be distributed via Carniflora News and at meetings for special events. PLEASE add your name to one or more of the rosters, even if you can only help for a couple of hours. Many ‘hands on deck’ ensures a fairer and more manageable distribution of work and responsibility. As I was re-elected as President at the July 2017 A.G.M, I look forward to working with my fellow Committee and all other members for the continued advancement and realisation of the A.C.P.S. Inc’s goals of education, cultivation and conservation of Carnivorous plants. With all good wishes, Wesley Fairhall - President Page 4!
