Kabba Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education University of Toronto Abstract This study argues that the Sierra Leone Conflict arose from the society’s failure to institutionalize the post-conventional moral learning organizing principle for collective will formation and for conflict resolution. In this post-traditional society - one artificially constructed from diverse political and cultural groups, without a shared ethos – only mutual (communicative) understanding is appropriate to resolve differences and ensure solidarity. The society’s lack of mutual understanding created crisis tendencies that overburdened her adaptive capacity. By concealing crises tendencies through repression, the state caused their intensification, and eventual explosion into the catastrophic civil conflict. The study aims to illustrate that citizen’s capacity to practice social (communicative) interaction enables them realize the requisite reflexive post conventional moral learning i.e. the social intelligence or problem-solving capacity to effectively resolve conflict and coordinate society. This capacity enables the society decolonize itself, neutralize normative power, dogmatic consciousness, oppressive conventions, influential customs, and systemic imperatives. Thus, the study promotes the cultivation of civic virtues of post conventional morality (justice, ii truthfulness, moral rightness in interaction) as the key to liberate the society from its persistent crisis-inducing colonial organizing principle. As the theory of social evolution is the basis of sociology, which remains the only discipline focusing on society-wide problems, this study has uses it to understand the disruption of Sierra Leone’s constitutional democratic development. Using the rational reconstructive method, the study explicates the problematic validity of reasons adduced to ground norms, principles, policy decisions, and social interactions. Reasons constitute the axis around which processes of reaching understanding revolve; they serve as the foundation or basis for social integration or for constituting a legitimate social order (society). This means that lack of solidarity or social disintegration exemplifies a deficiency in the logic of social interaction, one that is short of the requisite categorical or species-wide moral cognitive consciousness. Finally, for this research, colonization is not necessarily externally induced, but possible in the daily politico-legal, social, and educational domains of the society. This study’s key point is that today’s Sierra Leone can achieve solidarity, and decolonize itself from self-imposed its conventional (authoritarian) organizing principle, only insofar as the state, economy, and civil society can find their limits in the socio-cultural domain of communication. iii Acknowledgement This dissertation could not have been completed without the saving power and instruction from the Spirit of Almighty God – I thank you Lord for your love, guidance, and protection.     Sierra Leone – Researched and compiled by the Refugee Documentation Centre of Ireland on 18 March 2010 Information as to what recent wars Sierra Leone has been involved in and when they ended. In a section titled “History” the United Kingdom Foreign & Commonwealth Office country profile for Sierra Leone states: “The SLPP ruled until 1967 when the electoral victory of the opposition APC was cut short by the country's first military coup. But the military eventually handed over to the APC and its leader Siaka Stevens in 1968. He turned the country into a one -party state in 1978. He finally retired in 1985, handing over to his deputy, General Momoh. Under popular pressure, one party rule was ended in 1991, and a new constitution providing for a return to multi-party politics was approved in August of that year. Elections were scheduled for 1992. But, by this stage, Sierra Leone's institutions had collapsed, mismanagement and corruption had ruined the economy and rising youth unemployment was a serious problem. En 1997 apparaît la traduction de La vie en fuite de Denis Bélanger. En 2002, les pièces Les Belles-Sœurs de Michel Tremblay et Leçon d’anatomie de Larry Tremblay sont traduites. En 2008, La distraction de Naïm Kattan et l’Anthologie de la nouvelle québécoise actuelle sont traduites vers le tamoul. Dans la traduction tamoule de l’Anthologie de la nouvelle québécoise actuelle, nous constatons un nombre significatif d’omissions. Nos recherches montrent que les omissions peuvent être divisées en trois catégories, à savoir les métaphores, les descriptions d’ordre sexuel et les descriptions qui présentent des problèmes d’ordre linguistique. Dans la présente recherche, nous cherchons à découvrir les méthodes adoptées par les traducteurs indiens anciens et contemporains pour traduire les œuvres littéraires vers le tamoul, ce qui nous permettra de mieux comprendre les méthodes de traduction adoptées pour traduire vers le tamoul les nouvelles québécoises, en vue entre autres d’étudier le rôle du sens suggestif et du délice esthétique en traduction littéraire.

It relies on a quantitative content analysis of press releases collected in the context of eleven national elections between 2012 to 2015. In line with the first hypothesis, the results show that parties from both the radical right and the radical left make use of populist appeals more frequently than mainstream parties. With regard to populism on cultural issues, the article establishes that the radical right outclasses the remaining parties, thereby supporting the second hypothesis. On economic issues, both types of radical parties are shown to be particularly populist. This pattern counters the third hypothesis, which suggests that economic populism is most prevalent among the radical left. Finally, there is no evidence for the fourth hypothesis, given that parties from the South do not resort to more populism on economic issues than those from the North. KEYWORDS: Introduction In the first decades immediately following World War II, populism was a rather marginal phenomenon in Western Europe (Gellner and Ionescu 1969).     The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 by Bakary Gibba A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Bakary Gibba (2011) The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Bakary Gibba Department of History, University of Toronto Abstract This thesis investigates the efforts of the West Indian Church to establish and run a fascinating Mission in an area of West Africa already influenced by Islam or traditional religion. It focuses mainly on the Pongas Mission’s efforts to spread the Gospel but also discusses its missionary hierarchy during the formative years in the Pongas Country between 1855 and 1863, and the period between 1863 and 1873, when efforts were made to consolidate the Mission under black control and supervision. Between 1873 and 1900 when additional Sierra Leonean assistants were hired, relations between them and African-descended West Indian missionaries, as well as between these missionaries and their Eurafrican host chiefs, deteriorated. More efforts were made to consolidate the Pongas Mission amidst greater financial difficulties and increased French influence and restrictive measures against it between 1860 and 1935. These followed an earlier prejudiced policy in the Mission that was strongly influenced by the hierarchical nature of nineteenth-century Barbadian society, which was abandoned only after successive deaths
