Recent biological investigations in this area were carried out within the framework of the international project Mar-Eco (Patterns and Processes of the Ecosystems of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge). In 2009 (from October, 25 to November, 29) 12 benthic sampling events were conducted on the R/V Akademik Ioffe, during the first oceanographic cruise of South Atlantic Mar-Eco. -
Abundance and Diversity of Decapod Crustaceans in the Deep-Catalan Sea (Western Mediterranean)
JOURNAL OF NATURAL HISTORY, 1992, 26, 1305-1323 Abundance and diversity of decapod crustaceans in the deep-Catalan Sea (Western Mediterranean) J. E. CARTES and F. SARDA Institut de Ciencies del Mar, Passeig National s/n, 08039 Barcelona, Spain (Accepted 7 August 1992) The deep-slope decapod fauna of the Catalan Sea was extensively sampled with an OTSB-14 bottom trawl. A total of 67 bottom tows were taken from 1985 to 1989 at bottom depths ranging from 552 to 2261 m. Species in which abundance decreased with depth were Plesionika acanthonotus, Polycheles typhlops, Calocaris macandreae and Geryon longipes. Highest densities of Acanthephyra eximia, Stereomastis sculpta, and Nematocarcinus exilis were attained at the great est depths studied. Total abundance, biomass and species richness for decapod crustaceans as a whole decreased with depth. Maximum decapod biomass and diversity occurred on the upper-middle slope on soft bottoms in the .Catalan Sea and in all regions for which data were available. In the Catalan Sea, an oligotrophic area, the abundance of decapods as a group seemed to be higher than in north- Atlantic eutrophic regions. In these latter areas, other deep-sea benthic invertebrate groups, particularly ophiuroids, predominate. KEYWORDS: Decapod crustaceans, Mediterranean, abundance, biomass, diversity. Introduction The deep-sea decapod crustacean fauna in the Mediterranean has been only quali tatively studied (Carpine, 1970a; Reyss, 1971; Fredj and Laubier, 1985; Peres, 1985; Abello and Valladares, 1988; Cartes, 1992 and references cited). Data on abundance, biomass and on the dominant species along the deep slope are particularly scarce. The structure of bathyal decapod crustacean populations on the upper slope in the northwestern Mediterranean is relatively well known (Zariquiey Alvarez, 1968; Sarda and Palomera, 1981; Abello et al., 1988) down to a depth of 800 m, with data on species abundance and biomass also available. -

Description d’E. paucidentata sp. nov. par Alain CROSNIER Résumé. - Trois espècesdu genre Eupusiphae, E. gilesii (Wood Mason, 1892), E. latirostris (Wood Mason, 1891)et E. paucidentata sp. nov., ont été récoltéesdans l’ouest de Madagascar. L’espècenouvelle est décrite et comparéeà celle dont elle est la plus proche, E. serrata (Rathbun, 1902). Le réexamende l’holotype de Parapasiphae grimaldii Coutière, 1911, montre que cette espèce appartient au genre Eupasiphae et est synonyme d’E. serrata. Enfin une clé d’identification des espècesdu genre Eupasiphae ainsi qu’une version, actualiséeen fonction des travaux récents, de la clé des genres de la famille des Pasiphaeidae,publiée par HOLTHUIS en 1955, sont proposées. Lebbeus sokhobio sp. nov. is described from abyssal depths (3303−3366 m) in the Kuril Basin of the Sea of Okhotsk. The related congeners are deep-water dwellers with a very distant distribution and very similar morphology. The new species is separated by minor morphological features, such as the armature of the rostrum and telson, meral spinulation of ambulatory pereiopods and the shape of the pleonal pleurae. This species is the deepest dwelling representative of the genus Lebbeus and the family Thoridae. A list of records of caridean shrimps recorded from abyssal depths below 3000 m is given. Keywords. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Two species of the Acanthephyridae, Acanthephyra brevicarinata Hanamura, 1984, and A. brevirostris Smith, 1885, are reported for the Pacific coast of Mexico. The number of known localities for A. brevicarinata, a species endemic to the eastern Pacific, is increased from 24 to 70 and the number of specimens on records from 160 to 363. New distribution limits are provided for this species, from 25°02’N; 112°54’W to 16°58’N; 100°55’W, including the central and northern Gulf of California from 28°01’N; 112°17’W southwards. Based on previous information related to its capture and the mor- phology of its first larval stage, A. brevicarinata is considered to be part of the nektobenthic fauna. -

ABSTRACT - A total of six species of pelagic shrimps were collected during the TALUD XIV cruise aboard the R/V “El Puma”, in the northern Gulf of California, in April 2011, including two species of Dendrobranchiata [Eusergestes similis (Hansen, 1903) and Sergia phorca (Burkenroad, 1940)], and three species of Caridea [Pasiphaea americana Faxon, 1893, P. emarginata Rathbun 1902, and P. pacifica Rathbun, 1902]. Additional specimens of the previously reported Maryprocessa pippinae (Wicksten & Méndez, 1985) were also found among the samples. Most frequently collected species were P. americana (50% of total) and P. pacifica (36.6%). Most numerous species in the samples were P. pacifica, P. americana and E. similis. Some minor morphological differences not previously recorded in specimens of Pasiphaea pacifica collected elsewhere were detected. These differences might correspond to an intraspecific variation. The family Oplophoridae is well represented in this area. Five of the seven known genera were identified. Hymenodora frontalis, H. glacialis, and H. gracilis were described and further differentiating characters were illustrated. Other mem- bers of the family Oplophoridae were illustrated and described as follows: Acanthephyra curtirostris, Meningodora mollis, Notostomus japonicus, Systellaspis braueri and S. cristata. Species of the family Pasiphaeidae, although less well repre- sented, were identified. The presence or absence of the mandibular palp in these two species, Parapasiphaë sulcatifrons and P. cristata, found to be of little systematic value in separating them. Specimens with a carapace length of 7- 10mm lack a mandibular palp; one with a carapace length of 17 -25mm had a two -segmented palp. Pasiphaea pacifica, P. magna, and P. chacei were identified and illustrated. The taxonomy, geographical distribution, color and luminescence are discussed. As a result we report some rare Oplophoridae species collected during the cruise. This family includes 73 species occurring strictly on the meso- and bathypelagic zones of the oceans. Five Oplophoridae species were sampled: Acanthephyra acanthitelsonis Bate, 1888; A. quadrispinosa Kemp, 1939; Heterogenys monnioti Crosnier, 1987; Hymenodora glacialis (Buchholz, 1874) and Kemphyra corallina (A. Milne-Edwards, 1883). Among these, H. monnioti and K. corallina are considered extremely rare, both with very few records. Of the sampled species, only A. quadrispinosa and H. glacialis were previously recorded to southwestern Atlantic, so the Oplophoridae fauna of the South MAR seems more related with the fauna from the eastern Atlantic and Indian oceans.
