But the best level in the world is in South Afri- ca, where women hold just over 21% of senior executive positions. The major role of women in the industry workforce, which is some 40–50% in artisanal and small-scale mining, is under-reported. Despite all the work done over the years in making the industry more gender-responsive in Africa, women still face massive challenges: lack of mentorship and career guidance, lack of workplace sup- port, hygiene facilities and safety.
