bolstered by a wealth of health care and technology professionals, New York City is positioned to lead the nation in health care information technology, according to a report from the Center for an Urban Future. Under new U.S. rules, hospitals and health care providers must con- vert all paper-based patient records to electronic documents by 2015. Government is putting up $19.2 bil- lion in stimulus dollars to under- write the switch and thou- sands of new jobs developing electronic health record systems. The report says the Big Apple stacks up well against other regions: The area’s health care IT sector has attracted $61 million in venture cap- ital funding since 2008, and at least 43 providers of health care IT serv- ices are based in the five boroughs. “The fact that we’re not yet way behind Silicon Valley or Boston or San Diego is promising,” says center Director Jonathan Bowles. “We still have a chance to capture a significant NEW YORK CITY’S LARGEST OWNER OF COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE share of the jobs in this sector.”

2009 CITY FACTS ECONOMY The city is mired in a recession that could rival the worst in its history. Optimists think NY will lose a quarter of a million jobs, out of a base of 3.8 million; others guess upward of 300,000. The consensus is that the city will start recovering—slowly—perhaps in the middle of next year.

The Five Largest Job Sectors Gross City Product Health care and education, which form a sector dominated by nonprofits, make up the largest proportion of the NYC economy, Gross city product is expected to fall this year from measured by number of jobs. A look from 2000 forward shows that finance has slowly declined in share, even in the boom years. 2008’s $486.2 billion. It’s not expected to come near its peak level again until after 2013.

Household Income in New York City Back-to-back annual declines in average household income are unusual, but that’s what the city is experiencing. Federal Bucks The lion’s share of NYC’s stimulus money is going to education and Medicaid. Infrastructure spending, favored by economists to spur growth, gets the sixth-largest sum.

Looking Back: How NYC Got Hooked on Wall Street The city’s reliance on Wall Street is about money, not jobs. The proportion of New York workers employed selling securities is larger than it was in 1975, but not by much. The percentage has even declined slightly since 2001. The outsize pay scales used in the securities industry began to show up about 25 years ago. One conclusion suggested by this historical view: Before the early 1990s, Wall Street was just one more piece of the economy.
