About the Seminar The financial system of any country is the back bone of economy of that country. A financial system of all economies are broadly sub divided in to money market, capital market, gilt edged securities market, foreign exchange market. The capital market and the gilt security market provide avenues to the surplus sectors such as household, institutions in the economy to deploy their funds and to the deficit sectors such as corporate and government sectors to mobilize fund for their requirements. A good capital market is one of the pre requisites for a nation’s economic progress. The significance of an efficient capital market is well understood by developed countries but in India the capital market as not been given the much attention which it deserves. Consequently, the Indian capital market is not so developed as it was in case of USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany etc… The need of educating the common man on the concept of capital market is need of the hour similarly it is an obligatory on the part of the some experts to share their experiences in stock market and it must be reviewed the development of stock market in India. And emphasized that grading of IPOS is the need of the day to make investment decisions. The role of capital market in developing economy like our’s should be enhanced. Finance is the driver of the economy so highlighting the macro & micro economic benefits of capital market is badly needed at the same time there will be need to broaden the base of sensex in India as it remains restricted to the traditional instruments of saving like gold. We have to insist on wide scope for the growth of capital market in India as the saving rate is more. It is necessary to channelize the untapped finance in to the capital market and more space needs to be provided small and medium enterprises to grow. The experts in the capital market are used to say that India as a land of opportunities in the field of capital market. So the present seminar is an attempt to bring together the acamadicians, research scholars, bankers, financial experts, UG/PG students and other interested to look in to the trends in the capital market and to find the prospectus for it in the Indian Economy. 3 Objectives of the seminar : * To know, to understand and to glance over the concept of capital market. * To throw light on the issues , challenges and opportunities of capital market * To assess the latent trends occurred in the Indian capital market * To compare and contrast the Indian capital market with developed capital market of some economies of the world. * To take polic y incentives in connection with Indian capital market. Sub Themes of the National Seminar: 1. The role, structure, operation and development of capital market in India in current scenario 2. Issues, challenges and opportunies of Indian capital market 3. Reforms of Indian capital market 4. Impact of capital market on national economy of India. 5. Indian capital market and developed capital market of the world a comparison 6. • CHAPTER 2 the District of Dharwad Has Played a Pre-Eminent Role In
38 Dharwad District CHAPTER 2 HISTORY he district of Dharwad has played a pre-eminent role in the history of Karnataka. It was the T core region of the major dynasties that ruled in Karnataka such as the Badami Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Kalyana Chalukyas and the Adilshahis of Bijapur. To establish their hegemony in the fertile region of Belvola-300, there have been pitched battles between the Seunas and the Hoysalas. Whenever Marathas invaded the South, they made use of the district as the highway. As the hinterland growing cotton, Hubli (Rayara Hubli or Old Hubli) was a major industrial centre. When the British in their early years of trade had founded a factory at Kadwad on the banks of the Kali, the supply of textile to the factory was through old Hubli. There was a land route from Hubli to Kadra, the higher point of the Kali (till which the river was navigable) and it was through this route that merchandise from Dharwad, Bijapur and Raichur was transported. Products of thousands of textile looms from Dharwad, Bijapur and Raichur could reach the port through Hubli. In the south, Haveri and Byadgi had communication with the Kumta port. Chilly cultivation introduced into India by the Portuguese was raised here and after the British took over, transportation of cotton and chillies was made through Kumta from Byadgi and Haveri. Haveri was the main centre of cardamom processing and for final transport to Kumta. Byadgi chilly earned the name Kumta chilly due to its export from Kumta port. In England Kumta cotton was a recognised variety though it came from the Dharwad region.
