Current Review Christian Ferras plays Beethoven and Berg Violin Concertos aud 95.590 EAN: 4022143955906 4022143955906 Fanfare (Robert Maxham - 2012.05.01) Audite’s program of violin concertos by Ludwig van Beethoven and Alban Berg captures two moments in the life of Christian Ferras, the first a studio recording from November 19, 1951, made in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche after the 18-year-old violinist had given a live performance of the work at the Titania Palast and more than a decade before he would record the work with Herbert von Karajan and the same orchestra. The young Ferras sounds both flexible and sprightly in the first movement’s passagework, producing a suave tone that might be described as almost gustatory in its effect as he soars above the orchestra. That tone lacks the sharp edge of Zino Francescatti’s and even the slightly reedy quality of Arthur Grumiaux’s, and he never seems to be deploying it simply for the sheer beauty of it: As sumptuous as it might sound, it always serves his high-minded concept of the work itself. And his playing of Fritz Kreisler’s famous cadenza similarly subordinates virtuosity to musical effect. Karl Böhm sets the mood for a probing exploration of the slow movement, in which Ferras sounds similarly committed; he never allows himself to be diverted into mannerism or eccentricity, as Anne-Sophie Mutter does in her performance with Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic (Deutsche Grammophon 289 471 349, Fanfare 26:5 and 26:6). What the young Michael Rabin achieved in the showpieces of Wieniawski and Paganini, Ferras arguably exceeded in the music of Beethoven.

  • Download Augustin Dumay Biography
Augustin Dumay International critics have compared Augustin Dumay to the great violinists of the 20th century, describing him as a “great classical stylist”, a reputation underscored by his outstanding recordings for Deutsche Grammophon: Beethoven’s complete sonatas with Maria João Pires, a set that “surely ranks with Grumiaux/Haskil, Menuhin/Kempff, or Perlman/Ashkenazy” (International Piano), Brahms’ trios in which “the Milstein legacy in Dumay’s playing is wonderfully apparent” (Gramophone), and Mozart’s concertos with the Camerata Salzburg, “without exaggeration one of the finest Mozart violin concerto discs ever made” (Classic CD), in which he “confirms that he is an exceptional interpreter of Mozart as were Stern or Grumiaux before him” (Classica). Born into a family of musicians – his mother is a cellist and pianist, his father an amateur violinist – Augustin Dumay started violin lessons at the age of 5, after attending a concert by Nathan Milstein. Aged ten, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, winning the premier prix at the age of thirteen. His first concert at the Théâtre des Champs- Élysée followed a year later and he then appeared at the Montreux Festival, playing for Joseph Szigeti and Henryk Szeryng, who invited him to replace him on a tour of South America. On his return, Augustin Dumay worked in Paris with Nathan Milstein, who said of him: “I believe he will take his place amongt the great violinists of the year 2000”. He then went on to work in Brussels with Arthur Grumiaux for five years. He soon became familiar to concert audiences in France, but his international career took off thanks to his encounter with Herbert von Karajan.

The ‘Thun’ Sonate seems more classical and more cheerful, whereas the impassioned, heroic Third Sonata reveals a symphonic spirit. Yet their internal richness 4 The secret of a fulfilled artistic life might be said to be found in that aspiration embraces all of life’s contradictions, and they represent a corresponding range of challenges 5 towards indefinite repetition, ever alike and yet different, in a cyclical process of constant for performers wishing to capture the works’ essence ‘in a clear, subtle fashion, without DE > P.

  • Performance and Analysis of Brahms Quintet Op. 115 for Clarinet and String Quartet Searching for a Deeper Interpretation
Course CA1004 Master degree project 30hp 2020 - 2021 Degree of Master in Music Department of Classical Music Supervisor: Sven Åberg Examiner: Cecilia Zilliacus Maria Rubio Carrión Performance and analysis of Brahms quintet op. 115 for clarinet and string quartet Searching for a deeper interpretation The sounding part of the project consists of the following recording: 1. Old recording (2020) of Brahms Quintet made in Grünewaldsalen 2. New recording (2021) of Brahms Quintet made in Körsalen Abstract In this thesis, I have studied the composer Johannes Brahms. I have talked about the background and history of his Quintet in B minor for clarinet and string quartet and I have then analyzed the piece. The purpose of this thesis is to find lesser known but significant information about Brahms to help other clarinetists when they have to perform this important piece of clarinet repertoire. Moreover, my artistic questions are if one piece can change your perception or your way to play it after doing a deep analysis and if the interpretation is in a way stronger than before. I decided to analyze this piece due to my interest in Brahms and to learn more about the expressive qualities in his music. I wanted to know more about the composer and so I chose this Quintet, because it is a challenging piece to play and is often performed. From the quintet, I concentrated specifically on the possibilities of performing it and I tried to search for a way to have a deeper understanding of Brahms to produce the most convincing artistic performance of the piece.
