For the first time in the history of shipping a tanker of a 100 000 tons deadweight was piloted along the .

Tanker SCF-Baltica (Aframax) under the flag of Liberia of 117 000 t deadweight and ice-class Arc 5 loaded 70 thousand tons of gas condensate and left the port of () on 14 August. She got to the Bering Strait on 27 August and followed to the Pacific Ocean. The total time spent to call on the port of destination Ningbo (China) on the 6th of September constituted 23 days of which sailing along the NSR took less than 10 days. The sailing distance from Murmansk to Shanghai when using NSR is 6600 nautical miles while through the Suez Channel the distance will be 12000 nautical miles. actual itinerary (dates marked in white) i/b 50 Let Pobedy itinerary Bulker Nordic Barents Arc 4 under Hong Kong flag with 41000 tons of iron ore passed from Norway to China along the NSR in 8 days without calling on any intermediate port. The average speed on the NSR was 13 knots. The passenger mv Georg Ots class Ice B under Russian flag was piloted from Murmansk eastbound with the port of destination . The overall sailing in broken ice lasted for 7 days from 16 to 23 September. At one point the piloted icebreaker was tugged through the heavy ice.

The passage from the Bering Strait to the island of Novaya Zemlya under the pilotage of atomic icebreaker Rossiya took the Swedish supply icebreaker Tor Viking II class Arc 5 just 9 days. This could have been done even faster but the caravan met two pack-ice areas and i/b Rossiya had to break ice around Tor Viking.

The voyage with Tor Viking II was done a month after the official completion of summer-to-autumn navigation on the NSR. This successful voyage done in late December proved that it is possible to increase the period of Arctic navigation on the NSR in winter months. In 2011 the shipping on the NSR is going to increase significantly. Rosatomflot already received 15 applications to provide ice pilotage to commercial vessels. Northern Sea Route provides to shipowners and shippers an opportunity to lower the cost of shipping considerably and avoid such threat as pirate attacks. The Companies of the Report:
