Brewer High School students were recently introduced to state of the art optics technology in their science classes, thanks to a $10,000 Innovative STEM grant awarded by AT&T. "Optics is a growing STEM field," said grant recipient and science teacher Michael Bodiford. "Students with experience working with light and optics will have an advantage in a variety of careers including telecommuni- cations, sales and marketing, photography, X-ray technicians and the mili- tary." The science department purchased equipment that allowed students to work in discovery labs and measure wavelengths and analyze data; create, view, and measure diffraction and interference patterns; and more. "This gives us a bigger insight into the things we can't really understand at the moment or can't get to/can't see," said student Elizabeth Campbell. "This special equipment can change our look into space and science." Student Brandon Sanders said the students were able to test the purity of water from different sources around the school and view the color of certain gases when heated hot enough to emit light. Science teachers are: Bodiford, Randall Bradshaw, Alan Bonner, Jamie Martin and Judy Bullard.
