RNDr. Michal Horsák, Ph.D. Academic Year: 2013/2014 Number of Pages: 42+9 Keywords: waterbeetles; spring; fen; assemblages; poor-rich gradient Abstrakt Tato práce se zabývá druhovou bohatostí a skladbou společenstev vodních brouků na prameništních slatiništích v Západních Karpatech. Abstract This study deals with species richness and composition of water beetle assemblages of the Western Carpathians spring fens. The main objective of this study was to determine, which environmental factors influence the water beetle assemblage patterns in this habitat type and whether the response to the analysed factors differs between a group of eurytopic species and a merged group of adaptable and relict species. Species indicator analysis was also performed to determine potential bioindicator species of the main four mineral types of fens along the mineral richness gradient. In September 2012 and 2013, 26 fen sites in Slovakia and in the Czech Republic were sampled. Samples were obtained by semiquantitative method using a metal sieve. Environmental variables were measured between 2006 and 2012. Data was analysed in the R and CANOCO programmes. In total, 60 species of water beetles from eight families were found in the study area. The assemblages were composed of crenophilic species (e.g. Hydroporus longicornis, H. ferrugineus, H. kraatzi, Anacaena globulus and Elmis latreillei), but the vast majority consisted of eurytopic species (e.g. Agabus bipustulatus, Hydroporus incognitus, Anacaena lutescens, Laccobius bipunctatus and Hydrobius fuscipes). Species richness of water beetles was positively correlated with pool size, which reflects also their permanence. A positive correlation of species richness with the presence of pools was stronger for group of eurytopic species in contrast to merged group of adaptable and relict species (and also all species). The results of a constrained ordination (db-RDA) showed a significant effect of the presence of pools on structuring of water beetle assemblage, which is consistent with published data. The other analysed factors were not significant. Indicator analysis found only two species to be significant as suitable indicators of ecological types of habitats (Laccobius bipunctatus and Coelostoma orbiculare). This result, along with the results of the constrained ordination, suggests that water beetle assemblages respond to the changes along the gradient of mineral richness only marginally. However, this gradient can influence the species indirectly through the food chains.

Report production: July 2009 Consultation: August 2009 SUMMARY Ponds are an important freshwater habitat that has been shown to play a key role in maintaining biodiversity at landscape level. However, ponds are also vulnerable to environmental degradation and there is evidence that, at a national level, pond quality is declining. In 2007, the biodiversity importance of ponds was recognised when high quality ponds (Priority Ponds) were added to the list of UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Priority Habitats.

Radiocarbon dates on antler fragments, plant debris and bulk organic matter from silt, showed that the sediments accumulated between ca. 33 500 and 29 000 14C yr BP, during a period when this part of western Scotland was free of glaciers. The organic-rich sediments yielded a very rich flora and fauna and in total about 160 plant taxa and 61 coleopteran taxa were recorded together with other invertebrates. The Sourlie flora is one of the richest late Middle Weichselian floras yet studied within the British Isles. Leg bones of Coelodonta antiquitatis (woolly rhinoceros) and Rangifer tarandus (reindeer) were also found at the site.

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA).

  • Barcoding Beetles: a Regional Survey of 1872 Species Reveals High Identification Success and Unusually Deep Interspecific Divergences
Barcoding Beetles: A Regional Survey of 1872 Species Reveals High Identification Success and Unusually Deep Interspecific Divergences Mikko Pentinsaari1*, Paul D. N. Hebert2, Marko Mutanen3 1 Department of Biology, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland, 2 Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada, 3 Department of Biology, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland Abstract With 400 K described species, beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) represent the most diverse order in the animal kingdom. Although the study of their diversity currently represents a major challenge, DNA barcodes may provide a functional, standardized tool for their identification. To evaluate this possibility, we performed the first comprehensive test of the effectiveness of DNA barcodes as a tool for beetle identification by sequencing the COI barcode region from 1872 North European species. We examined intraspecific divergences, identification success and the effects of sample size on variation observed within and between species. A high proportion (98.3%) of these species possessed distinctive barcode sequence arrays. Moreover, the sequence divergences between nearest neighbor species were considerably higher than those reported for the only other insect order, Lepidoptera, which has seen intensive analysis (11.99% vs up to 5.80% mean NN divergence). Although maximum intraspecific divergence increased and average divergence between nearest neighbors decreased with increasing sampling effort, these trends rarely hampered identification by DNA barcodes due to deep sequence divergences between most species. The Barcode Index Number system in BOLD coincided strongly with known species boundaries with perfect matches between species and BINs in 92.1% of all cases. In addition, DNA barcode analysis revealed the likely occurrence of about 20 overlooked species.
