On hearing the news, Lillie said: “It’s important that girls play cricket as girls can do anything that boys can do. It’s important that boys and everyone else remembers that!” A decade ago, cricket was on the decline in state schools with less than 10% of them playing any form of meaningful, competitive cricket and for many girls, cricket wasn’t even an option. Today, over two million children have played competitive cricket through the programme. In 2013, 46% of pupils involved in the Chance to Shine programme - 191,700 - were girls. The programme links cricket clubs and their coaches to local primary and secondary schools, via the ECB’s network of County Cricket Boards. It costs just £15 to provide a year’s cricket coaching to one child and the charity needs to raise £1million each year to keep the programme running. On hearing the news of a millionth girl, England Women’s captain Charlotte Edwards, fresh from the team’s Ashes victory in Australia, sent a message to the charity saying: “Congratulations to everyone at Chance to Shine from all the England Women’s team for reaching one million girls. What a fantastic achievement! We’re proud to be a part of the campaign and hope to inspire many more girls to take up the game.”

NR27 9DS Pantomime...... has truly become local again with the staging of Cinderella by the Friends of Mundesley Inshore Lifeboat. The village hall reverberated with the age old shouts of “Oh yes it is!” and “It’s behind you” and the audience couldn’t help but join in. Lots of audience participation was the order of the day and they lapped it up. Local names and places were brought into the fun and some people, like a certain editor of a local free magazine, (Crab Tales), being the butt of a few jokes. Even a regular writer to the letters pages was honoured with her own song. In true panto style the actors and paying public came together to have fun. There was slapstick with water, flour & cream to make an explosive cake. There were dames with a grudge against everyone and everything. There were pretty princesses plus a double dose of fairies. Things were thrown at the audience, and sometimes thrown back. At one point the children in the front row almost became part of the performance when they heckled the actors, who returned the good hearted banter with relish. Cinderella didn’t let us down and the traditional storyline was followed where good triumphs over evil. Everything you would expect from an English pantomime. It would be unfair to mention names as there were many outstanding members of the cast. Together the whole production showed what talent can do when they all pull together. Locally written and locally produced. A great show where all the proceeds of the production go to the Mundesley Lifeboat. Thanks to Carol Matthews for this review and to Paul Damen for the photographs.
