Liz Jump By the time you read this, I will have been installed as the new Rector of Wroxham, Hoveton and Belaugh. It seems ages since I was appointed to the post, and I can’t wait to be officially here, and working among you. I’ve moved from eight rural parishes between Bury St Edmunds and Thetford, so Wroxham is a thriving metropolis by comparison, and I am looking forward to getting to know people, and finding my way about the parishes. I’m still living in slight chaos - boxes everywhere, and a huge amount of sorting to do, but I already love the area and know I’m going to be really happy here. I’ve moved with my son Chris, who is now job hunting. Not the easiest thing in the current climate. I’m aware that this magazine goes out to everyone in the parishes, church goer or not. So, to those who attend church, can I say how much I look forward to working with you, alongside you, as we follow the call of God. I hope to meet many of you at my installation, or at our first benefice service on the following Sunday. To those who don’t currently come to church, can I share with you the fact that the Church of England is parochial, which means that the Parish Church exists for the whole parish, and everyone has a right to its services whether they attend church or not. The same goes for the clergy. I’ve been appointed as Rector for the parishes, for everyone, not just those who come along on a Sunday. So please, whether you see me out on my bike (no, not the motorised kind - I failed my test) on the water in my canoe, in the pub, or anywhere else, say hello! I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming weeks. I’ll do my best to remember names, but I make no promises - there is one of me, and many of you, so it may take me a few weeks! Love and Prayers Liz COVER The cover this month commemorates the Great War, with all the huge and terrible waste it brought with it. A Flanders Poppy, superimposed on a photograph of a Great War Cemetery, is overlaid with a guttering candle symbolic of the 'lights going out all over Europe'. In a vignette we see the event when it was said that 'a single shot killed a million people' as Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by teenage student Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo on June 28th 1914; in the second vignette is another boy in his teens, the Tsarevich Alexei Romanov of Russia in his army uniform at the age of 13. A year later, on July 17th 1918, along with his father Tsar Nicolas II and the entire Russian Royal Family, he was murdered by the Bolsheviks. Assassinations of members of the European Royal family effectively began and ended the Great War, millions were slaughtered in the interim, and the 'Gilded Age' of the 20th century's opening years was swept away for ever. In the overall design of this 'Bridge' cover, looked at through half-closed eyes, some may even sense a symbol of Death itself. Please do join us! Matt’s Musings Who Cares? This summer, 70 churches across Norfolk (including Wroxham & Hoveton URC) are asking their communities one question: “What hurts the most?” In the Autumn, churches will be looking at how we can respond to the needs raised and we hope to show that we care, and God cares, for the hurts and struggles we all face. If you would like to find out more or take part online, please visit www.who-cares.org.uk. Alternatively, we have survey cards available in the foyer of The Hub, which you are very welcome to come and fill in. Our weekly Open House is a great opportunity to meet up with friends over a coffee and slice of homemade cake or for a simple soup lunch. It is free – all we ask for is a small donation towards the costs. Open House meets every Thursday from 10:30am to 1pm. All are welcome! JAM (our Sunday Kids Club) is always open to new children for fun, cooking, games, crafts and Bible stories. JAM+ is similar, but takes place once a month on a Friday evening from 6 – 7:30pm and is targeted at youngsters in school years 8 - 11. Please contact Chris Billing at [email protected] or phone 01603 783992 for more details. Our Prayer Gathering is an informal opportunity to gather for prayer.

  • Coronavirus Update
Update on what the NHS in Norfolk and Waveney is doing to respond to coronavirus (7 January 2021) NHS vaccinates nearly 40% of Norfolk and Waveney’s most vulnerable patients against COVID-19 Almost 40% of all people over the age of 80 living in Norfolk and Waveney have received their first vaccination against COVID-19. It comes as the number of people vaccinated in the area approaches 30,000. In Norfolk and Waveney, out of a population of 65,000 over 80s - the most vulnerable age group – some 25,500 people have had the life-saving jab. The NHS is driving forward the vaccination of the rest of the over 80s and other most at risk groups still to be vaccinated. Two further GP-led vaccination sites, Bowthorpe Medical Practice, Norwich and The Park Surgery, Great Yarmouth begin vaccinating this week. They will be joined next week by 10 more sites in community buildings and GP premises, which will be begin delivering the new AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine alongside the Pfizer jab. This will mean there will be 21 local vaccination sites in Norfolk and Waveney, in addition to the James Paget University Hospital, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn. These sites will be: • Drayton Medical Practice • Sheringham Medical Practice • The Market Surgery, Aylsham • Sole Bay Health Centre, Southwold • Manor Farm Medical Centre, Swaffham • Poringland Community Centre, South Norfolk • Gurney Surgery, Norwich • Hoveton Village Hall, North Norfolk • Rossis Leisure, North Walsham • Snettisham Surgery Dr Anoop Dhesi, Chair of NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, which is co- ordinating the roll-out of the vaccination programme, said: “We’ve made a great start beginning to protect the most vulnerable people.
