LIMITATIONS ON COPYRIGHT PROTECTION FOR FORMAT IDEAS IN REALITY TELEVISION PROGRAMMING I. INTRODUCTION Television networks constantly compete to find and produce the next big hit. The shifting economic landscape forged by increasing competition between and among ever-proliferating media platforms, however, places extreme pressure on network profit margins. Fully scripted hour-long dramas and half-hour comedies have become increasingly costly, while delivering diminishing ratings in the key demographics most valued by advertisers. It therefore is not surprising that the reality television genre has become a staple of network schedules. New reality shows are churned out each season.1 The main appeal, of course, is that they are cheap to make and addictive to watch. Networks are able to take ordinary people and create a show without having to pay “A-list” actor salaries and hire teams of writers.2 Many of the most popular programs are unscripted, meaning lower cost for higher ratings. Even where the ratings are flat, such shows are capable of generating higher profit margins through advertising directed to large groups of more readily targeted viewers.

‘LIES BETWEEN FRIENDS’ CAST BIOS GABRIELLE ANWAR (Joss) – Born in Berkshire, England, the endearing and accomplished Gabrielle Anwar has more than 45 film and television performances to her credit in both Europe and the United States, including her breakout film, “Scent of a Woman,” where she was whisked off her feet into an acclaimed tango with Al Pacino. Anwar has enthralled in a vast array of diverse characters from the blind diving horse circus performer in Disney’s biopic “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” to the risqué royal in Showtime’s “The Tudors” to the supercilious counterpart to Noah Wyle in TNT’s “The Librarian II.” She also played the fatal object of desire in “Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead,” the regal Queen Anne in “The Three Musketeers,” the party girl in BBC’s adaptation of Mortimer’s “Summer’s Lease” and the coquette pursuing Dermott Mulroney and Hope Davis in the independent feature “Happy Together.” Currently, Anwar stars as Fiona in the USA Network original series “Burn Notice.” With three children, a canine, a feline, an art studio, a yoga fanatic, a garden and a slew of literature in the works, Anwar lacks any free time. # # # CRAIG SHEFFER (Sheriff Zach Watts) – After studying theatre at East Stroudsburg University, Craig Sheffer immediately relocated to New York to pursue a career in acting. Early auditions landed him a role in the off-Broadway play Punchy, and he soon found himself co- starring in the award-winning Broadway production Torch Song Trilogy. In less than a year, producers spotted his work on Broadway and cast him in his feature-film debut opposite Emilio Estevez in “That Was Then, This Is Now.” Sheffer later landed starring roles in the John Hughes comedy “Some Kind of Wonderful” and the father/son drama “Split Decisions,” with Gene Hackman.

VCR”S: THE END OF TV AS EPHEMERA by Shawn Glinis A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee May 2015 ABSTRACT VCR’S: THE END OF TV AS EPHEMERA by Shawn Glinis The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2015 Under the Supervision of Professor Richard K. Popp Although the VCR is often written about in scholarly literature, it is usually discussed in relation to Hollywood videotapes and rental stores. This study fills a gap in the current literature by presenting a significant history of the VCR in relation to TV during the period regularly referred to as the VCR’s first decade, 1975 to 1985. Specifically, this study is a look at the divergent discourses of the TV industry and the public opinion of TV viewership during this early era that offer insight into how we have come to contemporarily conceptualize TV.
