Carlson Center for Imaging Science in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology Abstract The goal of the work reported in this dissertation is to develop methods for im- age segmentation and pigment mapping of paintings based on spectral imaging. To reach this goal it is necessary to achieve sufficient spectral and colorimetric accuracies of both the spectral imaging system and pigment mapping. The output is a series of spatial distributions of pigments (or pigment maps) composing a painting. With these pigment maps, the change of the color appearance of the painting can be simulated when the optical properties of one or more pigments are altered. These pigment maps will also be beneficial for enriching the historical knowledge of the painting and aid- ing conservators in determining the best course for retouching damaged areas of the painting when metamerism is a factor. First, a new spectral reconstruction algorithm was developed based on Wyszecki’s hypothesis and the matrix R theory developed by Cohen and Kappauf. The method achieved both high spectral and colorimetric accuracies for a certain combination of illuminant and observer. The method was successfully tested with a practical spectral imaging system that included a traditional color-filter-array camera coupled with two 5 optimized filters, developed in the Munsell Color Science Laboratory. The spectral imaging system was used to image test paintings, and the method was used to retrieve spectral reflectance factors for these paintings. Next, pigment mapping methods were brought forth, and these methods were based on Kubelka-Munk (K-M) turbid media theory that can predict spectral reflectance fac- tor for a specimen from the optical properties of the specimen’s constituent pigments. The K-M theory has achieved practical success for opaque materials by reduction in mathematical complexity and elimination of controlling thickness. The use of the gen- eral K-M theory for the translucent samples was extensively studied, including deter- mination of optical properties of pigments as functions of film thickness, and prediction of spectral reflectance factor of a specimen by selecting the right pigment combination. After that, an investigation was carried out to evaluate the impact of opacity and layer configuration of a specimen on pigment mapping. The conclusions were drawn from the comparisons of prediction accuracies of pigment mapping between opaque and translucent assumption, and between single and bi-layer assumptions. Finally, spectral imaging and pigment mapping were applied to three paintings. Large images were first partitioned into several small images, and each small image was segmented into different clusters based on either an unsupervised or supervised classification method. For each cluster, pigment mapping was done pixel-wise with a limited number of pigments, or with a limited number of pixels and then extended to other pixels based on a similarity calculation. For the masterpiece The Starry Night, these pigment maps can provide historical knowledge about the painting, aid conser- vators for inpainting damaged areas, and digitally rejuvenate the original color appear- ance of the painting (e.g. when the lead white was not noticeably darkened).     1 MCALab: Reproducible Research in Signal and Image Decomposition and Inpainting M.J. Fadili , J.-L. Starck , M. Elad and D.L. Donoho Abstract Morphological Component Analysis (MCA) of signals and images is an ambitious and important goal in signal processing; successful methods for MCA have many far-reaching applications in science and tech- nology. Because MCA is related to solving underdetermined systems of linear equations it might also be considered, by some, to be problematic or even intractable. Reproducible research is essential to to give such a concept a firm scientific foundation and broad base of trusted results. MCALab has been developed to demonstrate key concepts of MCA and make them available to interested researchers and technologists. MCALab is a library of Matlab routines that implement the decomposition and inpainting algorithms that we previously proposed in [1], [2], [3], [4]. The MCALab package provides the research community with open source tools for sparse decomposition and inpainting and is made available for anonymous download over the Internet. It contains a variety of scripts to reproduce the figures in our own articles, as well as other exploratory examples not included in the papers. One can also run the same experiments on one’s own data or tune the parameters by simply modifying the scripts. The MCALab is under continuing development by the authors; who welcome feedback and suggestions for further enhancements, and any contributions by interested researchers. Conservator, Objects Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Gilt objects, and the process of gilding, have a tremendous appeal in the art community--perhaps not least because gold is a very impressive and shiny currency, and perhaps also because the technique of gilding has largely remained unchanged since Egyptian times. Gilding restorers therefore have enjoyed special respect in the art community because they manage to bring back the shine to old objects and because they continue a very old and valuable craft. As a result there has been a strong temptation among gilding restorers/conservators to preserve the process of gilding rather than the gilt objects them- selves. This is done by regilding, partially or fully, deteriorated gilt surfaces rather than attempting to preserve as much of the original surface as possible. Such practice may be appropriate in some cases, but it always presupposes a great amount of historic knowledge of the gilding technique used with each object, including such details as the thickness of gesso layers, the strength of the gesso, the type of bole, the tint and karatage of gold leaf, and the type of distressing or glaze used. To illustrate this point, I am asking you to exercise some of the imagination for which museum conservators are so famous for, and to visualize some historic objects which I will list and discuss. This will save me much time in showing slides or photographs. After all, when a painting is complete, all of the intention, thought, and feeling that went into creating the work exist solely in the materials. This issue of Studio Notes looks at Gamblin's organization of their color palette and the division of mineral and modern colors. This visual division of mineral and modern colors is unique in the art material industry, and it gives painters an insight into the makeup of pigments from which these colors are derived, as well as some practical information to help painters create their own personal color palettes. So, without further ado, let's take a look at the Gamblin Artists Grade Color Chart: The Mineral side of the color chart includes those colors made from inorganic pigments from earth and metals. These include earth colors such as Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre, as well as those metal-based colors such as Cadmium Yellows and Reds and Cobalt Blue, Green, and Violet. The Modern side of the color chart is comprised of colors made from modern "organic" pigments, which have a molecular structure based on carbon. These include the "tongue- twisting" color names like Quinacridone, Phthalocyanine, and Dioxazine. These two groups of colors have unique mixing characteristics, so this organization helps painters choose an appropriate palette for their artistic intentions. Eras of Pigment History This organization of the Gamblin chart can be broken down a bit further by giving it some historical perspective based on the three main eras of pigment history – Classical, Impressionist, and Modern.

Being a prominent part of human expression through art, nature- derived pigments have been used in continuum through ages until now. Studies reveal that the primitive artist stored or used his pigments as color cakes made out of skin or reeds. Although records to help understand the technical details of Indian painting in the early periodare scanty, there is a certain amount of material from which some idea may be gained regarding the methods used by the artists to obtain their results. Considering Indian wall paintings, the most widely used earth pigments include red, yellow, and green ochres, making it fairly easy for the modern era scientific conservators and researchers to study them. The present knowledge on material sources given in the literature is limited and deficient as of now, hence the present work attempts to elucidate the range of earth pigments encountered in Indian wall paintings and the scientific studies and characterization by analytical techniques that form the knowledge background on the topic. Studies leadingto well-founded knowledge on pigments can contribute towards the safeguarding of Indian cultural heritage as well as spread awareness among conservators, restorers, and scholars.

Description: ART 315 Color - 3 semester hours, 6 hours studio, 6 hours independent study per week. Practice, theory, and study of color in art, media, and design. Levels A, B. Prerequisite: ART 110. This course is the study and practice of color in design. Students research, study, and mix color in a variety of projects. Projects are color assignments and free studies aimed at enabling a person to see, control, and eventually predict or master color effect. The instructor and visiting artists will demonstrate techniques and materials. The midterm and final exam presentations require you to prepare and conduct a live color demonstration, in addition to an exhibition of your personal color studies. Crushed up freeze dried fruits like blueberries make for an excellent pigment powder! b. Grind or mash up your pigment material. If using fresh blueberries, mash them then strain out the juice using a kitchen strainer. With frozen or freeze dried blueberries, use a mortar and pestle (or similar items like a bowl and large spoon) to grind them into a ine powder.
