  • Bulletin Fall 2014
BULLETIN FALL 2014 Katharina Wolpe passed away at her London In Memory of home on February 9, 2013. Throughout a long and Katharina Wolpe distinguished career as concert pianist and teacher, Katharina was renowned for the “radiance,” “finesse,” 1931-2013 “eloquence,” “exaltation” and “mastery” of By Austin Clarkson performances of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and the Second Viennese School. She championed the music of contemporary composers, especially that of her father Stefan Wolpe, taking part in many festivals of his music, and was honorary president of the Stefan Wolpe Society. On March 2 Katharina’s friends and family gathered at Golders Green Crematorium to celebrate her life. The “Adagietto” from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony and Schubert Impromptus played by Katharina were heard, her stepdaughter Jenny Leonard spoke, and long time friend Jess Jaray read these words: Kathi’s thieving squirrels will miss her. So will her disagreeable cat. Her wild garden birds will, and the fox she regularly left food for, who sometimes came into her house at night. There will be no more of the funds that she sent every year for the welfare of animals. The beggars she always gave to – particularly the young ones – hiding in corners where sometimes she was the only one who knew where they were. They will miss her. As will the homeless – one of whom she once mistakenly took in, and who then robbed her blind. All these will miss her, as we will, although I’m not certain that I’ll ever believe she’s gone. We know that everyone is irreplaceable, but I can’t help feeling she was more so than most.

  • Hergest Ridge
Hergest Ridge 1974 (Early 1974) Mike Oldfield writes and records demos for his second album at his home, The Beacon, Herefordshire, England. “Hergest Ridge (Part One) (1974 Demo)” “Hergest Ridge (Part Two) (1974 Demo)” “Chinese Tune” – Not much is known of this piece apart from its description in the March 16, 1974, issue of Melody Maker. It may have been rewritten into a part of what became Hergest Ridge or was an unused idea. “Hergest Ridge (Part One) (1974 Demo)” 20:19 Written by Mike Oldfield Appears on: Hergest Ridge (2010 Deluxe Edition) It’s pretty much all here, the various movements and structure of what would appear on the album. Of course, being a demo, it’s a bit rough, but it shows Oldfield organizing his new ideas. Some of the parts are played by different instruments than would be on the album. “Hergest Ridge (Part Two) (1974 Demo)” 18:10 Written by Mike Oldfield Appears on: Hergest Ridge (2010 Deluxe Edition) Like the Part One demo, this also shows Mike having assembled the parts of the piece into a cohesive whole, thus giving him a detailed map for the actual album sessions. (February 3) Atlantic Records releases the singles “Tubular Bells” in the North America. The label advertises “Now the Original Theme from ‘The Exorcist’.” 7” singe: “Tubular Bells (Now the Original Theme from The Exorcist)” “Tubular Bells (Part One – Finale Edit)” “Tubular Bells (Now the Original Theme from The Exorcist)” 3:18 Written by Mike Oldfield Appears on: North America 7” single; A Virgin Compilation This is the infamous version released as a single to promote The Exorcist film, without approval from Mike.

  • The Emergence of Art Rock (1980)
10 The Emergence of Art Rock (1980) John Rockwell Long, flat expanses ofprofessionalism bother me. I'd rather have a band that could explode at any time. And I think that's what people like too: soul and expression and realfire and emotion more than peifection. -Neil Young (Kohut and Kohut 1994, 99) The deluded notion that we're making anything but sugar is nuts. I'm not saying that sugar doesn't taste good, but it burns fast. It's not meant to last. This is not classical music. -Gene Simmons of Kiss, 2002 (Rabin 2002, 14) Rock is like a battery that must always go back to the blues to get recharged. -Eric Clapton (Szatmary 2009, 188) In "The Emergence of Art Ro~k" John Rockwell documents the history and musical elements of early prog (or progressive, or art) rock, and suggests that if rock music exhibits a life cycle comparable to other arts and artistic movements (youth, maturity, decay), we might broadly characterize its first two decades as follows: the '50s was a period of youthful exuberance, the '60s a time of healthy maturity, and the early '70s an era of decline and decadence. For some, prog rock was thus a terminal "cancer." Inevitably, death is followed by life, in this case the birth in the mid-70s of punk rock, which brought back the energy and excitement of the '50s. If we accept Rockwell's three-part scheme, we might then ask: Has rock experienced a similar life cycle (or cycles) since the mid '70s? If so, how might we describe that cycle? Rockwell, who served as both classical music critic and chief pop music critic for The New York Times, also observes that most of the art rock bands were English, and for a good reason.

  • David Bedford's the Garden of Love
Pop and Avant Garde Mixed: David Bedford’s The Garden of Love (1970) by John France Introduction One musical anniversary that will probably pass unnoticed in 2020 is the half-centenary of David Bedford’s (1937-2011) remarkable The Garden of Love. Yet, this is a period piece that exemplified much that was happening in the world of music in 1970. Two things are self-evident in even the briefest study of this work. First, the prevalence of ‘avant-garde’ techniques of the 1960s, including improvisation, graphic scores, and indeterminacy, and secondly, it is an excellent example of a crossover work between ‘classical’ music and the world of ‘progressive rock.’ Other instances of this genre include Jon Lord’s Concerto for group and orchestra (1969) which was a collaboration between Malcolm Arnold and Deep Purple, Emmerson, Lake and Palmer’s recreation of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (1971) and Rick Wakeman’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1974). The Work The Garden of Love is an experimental piece of musical theatre scored for an ensemble of flute, clarinet, horn, trumpet, double bass, dancers, and ‘pop group’. There is a diverse group instruments used by the group members: electric guitar, vocals, electric piano, organ, electric bass guitar, tenor and soprano saxophones, Swanee whistle, Indian bird warblers, drums, and ‘6 beautiful girls (for dancing and turning the pages)’. The score carries the following dedication: Susan, Sarah, Tammy, Chloe, David Atherton, all at Blackhill [Enterprises], Kevin Ayers, Lol Coxhill, Mike Oldfield, Robert Wyatt and the little man in the soiled, lemon coloured suit.’ It is to be wondered who this last-named individual was.

  • Mike Oldfield: TUBULAR BELLS
