Violett This thesis is a study o f how one faith based institution, the Roman Catholic Church, has evolved over the last century, a set of principles to bring about and guide its efforts in the promotion o f human welfare. The study is driven by and derives its theoretical framework from the approach to social welfare known as social development. The social development approach is characterized as a process o f intentional social change to bring about sustainable human well-being. This change is envisaged as harmonizing human development in all its facets: social, political, personal cultural, spiritual and economic. Using historical analysis, the thesis develops and delineates from social development a set of components with which to examine the principles in the Church’s Social Teaching allied to the promotion o f human welfare. The study demonstrates striking common conceptual foundations, mutuality of purpose and influence between ‘secular’ social development and that o f the Church’s approach to social development and illustrates a convergence and congruence in methodology between the two approaches. Foremost among the similarities is that the Church, in accord with ‘secular’ social development, holds as normative an integrated developmental process that joins all dimensions of human experience— social, economic, spiritual, political and cultural— to enhance and promote human well-being. The similarities notwithstanding, the analysis also points to fundamental divergences between the two approaches that largely emanate from the Church’s institutional structure and its faith orientation to social development, which are in some senses irreconcilable with ‘secular’ social development. These conclusions are reached through careful historical and textual analysis as well as through the development o f an illustrative case o f the Catholic Archdiocese of Ranchi. This local level study, which also used interview methods, provided an opportunity to examine how the Church’s social development principles emerged, were influenced and have been applied in Church action for human well-being in one local development context o f India. ACKNOWLEDEMENTS As I stand at the completion o f this research endeavor I am struck b y an experiential paradox. On the one hand, the experience o f this undertaking has been an intense sense of aloneness. Yet on the other hand, as much as the aloneness has been a reality, the endeavor has been an incredible and fertile enterprise in collaboration, which has naturally accumulated many debts of gratitude.     Don't be fooled! Civil society says NO to “Climate Smart Agriculture” and urges decision-makers to support agroecology We, the undersigned, belong to civil society organizations including social movements, peasants/farmers organizations and faith-based organizations from around the world. We are working to tackle the impacts of climate change that are already disrupting farming and food systems and threatening the food and nutrition security of millions of individuals. As we move towards COP21 in Paris, we welcome a growing recognition of the urgent need to adapt food systems to a changing climate, and the key role of agroecology within a food and seed sovereignty framework in achieving this, while contributing to mitigation through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. However, despite these promising signals, we share deep concerns about the growing influence and agenda of so- called “Climate-Smart Agriculture” (CSA) and the Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture (GACSA). Climate change is the biggest and the most urgent threat our societies face. We need a radical transformation of our food systems away from an industrial model and its false solutions, and toward food sovereignty, local food systems, and integral agrarian reform in order to achieve the full realization of the human right to adequate food and nutrition. We therefore urge decision-makers at country and UN levels to reject the dangerous rhetoric of Climate-Smart Agriculture. Climate Smart Agriculture must not be confused with agroecology Climate Smart Agriculture must not be confused with agroecologyi. Agroecology is a holistic approach to agriculture, based on principles of ecology as well as food and nutrition security, food sovereignty and food justice which seek to enhance agricultural systems by using and recycling natural resources instead of relying on externally-purchased inputs.

Eight parameters namely pH,Dissolved Oxygen, Biochemical Oxygen Demand ,Nitrate,Phosphate,Total Dissolved Solids and Faecal Colliform were considered to compute Water Quality Index (WQI) based on National Sanitation Foundation studies.Our findings highlighted the deterioration of water quality in the rivers due to industrialization and human activities.     December 2008 A Call for Climate Justice We, Catholic Bishops from the south and the north, address the world’s leaders as they prepare for the United Nations Climate Summits in Poznan and Copenhagen that will be decisive for the lives and livelihoods of all humanity. We are deeply concerned by the disproportionate impact human- induced climate change is having on poor and vulnerable people living in developing countries. Poor communities in developing countries are subject to the harshest effects of climate change, though they have done least to cause it. We, and the faithful in our communities, including millions of men, women and children from diverse cultures around the world, stand in profound solidarity with our global sisters and brothers. It is our moral obligation to take urgent action to tackle climate change and to do so in support of those most affected. We call on you to achieve a strong, binding and just global climate agreement to ensure the survival and wellbeing of all God’s children. As a matter of equity and responsibility, those who have created the problem must pay for the solution. Economically developed nations have a moral obligation to tackle climate change because of their disproportionate consumption of natural resources. Climate change is a reality today, affecting the lives and livelihoods of millions in developing countries by exacerbating storms, droughts and natural disasters. It is imperative that these countries receive the economic and technical assistance they need to adapt to climate change and ensure better lives and livelihoods for their people. We believe that we have a responsibility to exercise stewardship over the earth and its creatures.

    CIDSE press release, Warsaw, 19 November 2013 Holy See representative reminds COP19 climate negotiators that human survival is at stake, Commissioner Hedegaard warns of “business as usual” CIDSE, an international alliance of Catholic development organisations, heard dire warnings of climate change at a Warsaw conference with top-level speakers, including European Commissioner Hedegaard, Head of Holy See Delegation and Nuncio to Poland Archbishop Migliore, Scottish Minister of Environment and Climate Change Wheelhouse and Bangladeshi Bishop Gomes. The conference, co-organised with Caritas Poland and the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University, gathered faith-actors, civil society actors, politicians and climate scientists to work together towards climate justice on the occasion of the COP19 climate negotiations. The Holy See representative to Poland, Head of the Holy See Delegation to the COP19, Nuncio and Archbishop Celestino Migliore, opened the conference with an inspired plea. “Climate change is an ethical challenge for our civilization, asking us what changes we need to affect in our economic life, in the structures of our society and in the way we consume.” Recent polls conducted in Poland (by Public Opinion Research Center CBOS) show 89 % support for expanding renewable energy, with minority support for coal and lignite. A coal summit with backing from the Polish government in parallel to the COP19 negotiations and at the same time as the CIDSE conference, where Church representatives present spoke strongly of their concern for the poor and vulnerable in the world suffering most from climate change and called on governments to reduce radically exploitation of coal, oil and other fossil resources. Mr Andrzej Kassenberg of the Institute for Sustainable Development presented a study of the costs of “business as usual” for Poland and highlighted how the economy and to employment would benefit from shifting to renewable energy.

Corresponding Author: Abhijeet Das Received 08 November 2019; Accepted 25 November 2019 ABSTRACT: The present investigation is aimed at assessing the current water quality standard along the stretch of Brahmani River in terms of physico-chemical parameters. In the selected study area the River Brahmani is receiving a considerable amount of industrial wastes and witnessing a considerable amount of human and agricultural activities. Twelve samples were collected along the entire stretches of the river basin during the period from January-2000 to December-2015 on the first working day of every month. In the selected research area, the Brahmani River is receiving the domestic, industrial, and municipal waste waters/effluents all along its course. Various physico-chemical parameters like pH, Nitrate (NO₃), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Boron, Alkalinity, Calcium, Magnesium, Turbidity, Chloride Clˉ) , Sulphate (SO₄²ˉ), Fluoride(Fˉ) and Iron(Fe) etc. were analysed. The present study indicates that the water quality of Brahmani River is well within tolerance limit taking the physico-chemical parameters into considerations.
