Nelson, External Member, University of Delaware, Department of Geography i ABSTRACT The Arctic has long held power over the American imagination as a place of otherworldly beauty, life-threatening elements, and dangerous wildlife. Nearing the end of the nineteenth century, in a time of great anxiety about the direction of American society, the region took on new significance. As a new frontier, the Arctic was a place where explorers could establish a vigorous and aggressive type of American manhood through their exploits. Publications, lectures, newspaper accounts, and other media brought the stories of these explorers to those at home. Through such accounts, the stories of brave explorers counteracted the perceived softening of men and American society in general. Women played a crucial role in this process. They challenged the perceived male-only nature of the Arctic while their depiction in publications and the press contradictorily claimed that they retained their femininity. American perceptions of the Arctic were inextricably intertwined with their perceptions of the Inuit, the indigenous peoples that called the region home. In the late-nineteenth-century, Americans generally admired the Inuit as an exceptional race that embodied characteristics that were accepted in American Society as representing ideal manhood. -

Mr Penguin: Historien om en middag på The Explorers Club Anders Larsson På morgonen fredagen den 22 december 2017 anlände ett paket till Hand- skriftsavdelningen vid Göteborgs universitetsbibliotek (UB). Försändelsen var skickad med en budfirma från Calgary i Kanada två och ett halvt dygn tidigare och hade nått Göteborg på endast 60 timmar. Vad var det här för paket och varför så bråttom? Bakgrunden var i korthet följande. Sedan år 2004 förvaltar universitetsbiblioteket ett omfattande personarkiv efter forskningsresanden, professor Otto Nordenskjöld (1869–1928), en av sin tids mest namnkunniga personer inom den geografiska forskningen i Sverige och även utomlands. Materialet har sammanförts från flera olika håll och planen varit att i slutändan upprätta ett arkiv som så fullständigt som möjligt skulle spegla Nordenskjölds forskargärning i form av manuskript, korrespondens, klipp, fotografier och biografiska handlingar. Viktiga delar av hans personliga papper kom dock inte med vid arkivets överförande till UB, då en mängd handlingar avskilts ur kvarlåtenskapen och hamnat hos en privatperson. Det rörde sig bl.a. om viktig korrespondens, en mängd expeditionsrelaterade handlingar samt material av biografisk karaktär. Så var tillståndet ända fram till privatpersonens frånfälle i november 2016. Strax därpå började kontakter tas från bibliotekets sida med representanter för sterbhuset om att även det material rörande Nordenskjöld som fanns kvar, skulle kunna förvärvas av biblioteket och på det viset göra arkivet så komplett som möjligt. Diskussionerna utmynnade i att UB genom köp hösten 2017 kunde förvärva dessa arkivalier. Så långt var allt väl, men det visade sig sedan att en mindre mängd handlingar av misstag hade sålts till en antikvariatshandlare i Kanada, specialiserad på litteratur om polarområdena och geografisk forskning. -

O’Sullivan During the winter of 1867-68, Timothy H. O’Sullivan carried his stereo camera into the depths of the Savage silver mine as part of his work for Clarence King’s Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel. The stereo camera’s square frame harshly crops O’Sullivan’s staged photographs of miners, mimicking the vertical and horizontal wooden beams of Philip Deidesheimer’s square-set timbering method as if to lampoon the figurative structure of the silver mining industry as a whole. Around the same time, O’Sullivan took a group portrait of local Indian agent H. G. Parker with a group of Northern Paiute men and women dressed in western attire, who were likely displaced by the same mining ventures O’Sullivan was tasked to photograph. This paper considers the gap between these two images by examining the environmental ramifications of silver mining on the Northern Paiute community. -

The Explorers Club
The Magazine Antiques, December 2004 issue The Explorers Club by Robert McCracken Peck The year 2004 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Explorers Club, whose New York City headquarters, like its membership, reflects a wide-ranging fascination for the world’s wilder places and how to reach them. The organization is best known for its illustrious membership and its elaborate black-tie dinners with live animal displays and exotic menus of scorpion, sea snakes and other rarities. However, the club’s collections of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts are also worthy of note. Since 1965 the club has occupied the former residence of Stephen Carlton Clark (1882-1960), a businessman and Singer Sewing Machine Company heir. The club provides a suitably grand setting for the heroic portraits and memorabilia that its members have assembled over a century of global adventuring. The six-story Tudor revival building at 46 East Seventieth Street was designed to Clark’s specifications by Frederick Junius Sterner. Its cornerstone was laid in 1910, nearly three decades before Clark helped to establish the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. When Clark and his family called the elegant building home, it housed one of the finest private art collections in New York City, which included paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, El Greco, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Vincent van Gogh, and Georges Seurat. Some were given to Yale University, Clark’s alma mater; and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., but most ended up at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, on whose boards Clark served. -
