Kelsay The National Archives National Archives and Records Service General Services Administration Washington: 1955 National Archives Publication No. 56-8 i\ FORENORD To analyze and describe the permanently valuable records of the Fed eral Government preserved in the National Archives Building is one of the main tasks of the National Archives. Various kinds of finding aids are needed to facilitate the use of these records, and the first step in the records-description program is the compilation of preliminary inventories of the material in the 270-odd record groups to which the holdings of the National Archives are allocated. These inventories are called "preliminary" because they are provisional in character. They are prepared.as soon as possible after the records are received without waiting to screen out all disposable material or to per fect the arrangement of the records. They are compiled primarily for in ternal use: both as finding aids to help the staff render efficient refer ence service and as a means of establishing administrative control over the records. Each preliminary inventory contains an introduction that briefly states the history and fUnctions of the agency that accumulated the records. -

Jewel Theatre Audience Guide Addendum: London Gentlemen’s Clubs and the Explorers Club in New York City directed by Art Manke by Susan Myer Silton, Dramaturg © 2019 GENTLEMEN’S CLUBS IN LONDON Nell Benjamin describes her fictional Explorers Club in the opening stage directions of the play: We are in the bar of the Explorers club. It is decorated in high Victorian style, with dark woods, leather chairs, and weird souvenirs from various expeditions like snowshoes, African masks, and hideous bits of taxidermy. There is a sofa, a bar, and several cushy club chairs. A stair leads up to club bedrooms. Pictured above is the bar at the Savile Club in London, which is a traditional gentlemen’s club founded in 1868 and located at 69 Brook Street in Mayfair. Most of the gentlemen’s clubs in existence in London in 1879, the time of the play, had been established earlier, and were clustered together closer to the heart of the city. Clubs in the Pall Mall area were: The Athenaeum, est. 1824; The Travellers Club, est. 1819; The (original) Reform Club, 1832; The Army and Navy Club, 1837; Guard’s Club, 1810; United University Club, est. 1821, which became the Oxford and Cambridge Club in 1830; and the Reform Club (second location), est. 1836. Clubs on St. James Street were: Whites, est. 1693; Brooks, est. 1762; Boodles, est. 1762; The Carlton Club, 1832; Pratt’s, est. 1857; and Arthur’s, est. 1827. Clubs in St. James Square were: The East India Club, est. 1849 and Pratt’s, est. 1857. -

It is the longest-running scientific exploration organisation in the world. Each year through its Explorer Awards programme, SES provides grants to individuals leading scientific expeditions that focus on discovery, research, and conservation in remote parts of the world, offering knowledge, education, and community aid. Members and friends enjoy charity events and regular Explorer Talks, and are also given opportunities to join exciting scientific expeditions. SES has an excellent Honorary Advisory Board consisting of famous explorers and naturalists including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Dr Jane Goodall, Rosie Stancer, Pen Hadow, Bear Grylls, Mark Beaumont, Tim Peake, Steve Backshall, Vanessa O’Brien, and Levison Wood. Without its support, and that of its generous benefactors, members, trustees, volunteers, and part-time staff, SES would not achieve all that it does. To Read About Umberto Nobile and His Flight Over the North Pole
90° North ~ UMBERTO NOBILE ~ The North Pole Flights Umberto Nobile – 1885 (Lauro, Italy) – 1978 (Rome, Italy Italian aeronautical engineer and aeronautical science professor; designer of semi-rigid airships including the Norge and Italia. Promoted from Colonel to General in the Italian air force following the Norge North Pole flight, forced to resign following the Italia disaster. Spent five years in the USSR in the 1930s developing Soviet airship program; lived in the US for several years during WW II; returned to Italy in 1944 where he remained until his death in 1978 at age 92. Italian airship designer and pilot Umberto Nobile took part in two flights over the North Pole, one in 1926 in the airship Norge and another in 1928 in the airship Italia. The Norge [meaning Norway] flight took place on May 11-14, 1926, and was a joint Norwegian-American-Italian venture. The co-leaders were the great Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, American adventurer Lincoln Ellsworth, and Italian Umberto Nobile, the airship's designer and pilot. The Norge departed Kings Bay [Ny Ålesund], Spitsbergen in the Svalbard Archipelago on May 11, 1926--just five days after American Richard Byrd's claimed (and highly questionable) attainment of the North Pole by airplane--and flew by way of the North Pole to Teller (near Nome), Alaska. The flight, which originated in Rome, had been touted as "Rome to Nome" but bad weather forced them to land at the small settlement of Teller just short of Nome. This was the first undisputed attainment of the North Pole by air and the first crossing of the polar sea from Europe to North America. -

A small one, in a little black wooden frame. On the back, it says: “Greenland. Back-up Jesus, 1910-1913. Thule”. Facebook Google And indeed, one of the men in the picture looks like what most of us Twitter probably imagine Jesus looked like: shoulder-length hair and an Mail inscrutable expression. The man in the picture is, in fact, Peter Freuchen. Another man, slightly behind him and to the right has his hands on Freuchen’s shoulders. His features are both Greenlandic and Danish. The man is Jens Fleischer, Knud Rasmussen’s uncle. But this picture isn’t all we’ve got. Our archives can boast a far more unusual artefact: a little white box trimmed with gold containing a grizzled, red-brownish beard. Somehow, Freuchen’s history and personality makes it all less bizarre.
