  • Church in Wales Review July 2012
Church in Wales Review July 2012 The September 2010 meeting of the Governing Body was notable for the number of contributions from members with a common message: “The Church in Wales cannot go on doing the same things in the same way; some things need to change and we are open to – and indeed encourage – that possibility”. The Standing Committee and Bench of Bishops responded to this call by appointing an external review of the Church, with particular reference to its structures and use of resources, to increase the effectiveness of the Church’s ministry and witness. The Review Group’s members are prominent thinkers with a blend of experience in dealing with matters ecclesiastical and organisational: Lord Harries of Pentregarth, the former Bishop of Oxford; Professor Charles Handy, the eminent writer and adviser on business and organisational theory (and son of a Church of Ireland archdeacon); and Professor Patricia Peattie, former Convenor of the Scottish Episcopal Church’s Standing Committee and the first chairwoman of the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. The aim was to commission a review that could move quickly to gather and assimilate information about the state of the Church in Wales, then provide independent advice on how the Church might reshape itself to be more effective in the twenty-first century. Given the extent of its members’ other commitments, the Review Group has pursued its task with extraordinary vigour and dedication. The Group determined its own approach and programme. It has visited every diocese in Wales, meeting with the Bishop and Diocesan team in each and holding an open meeting for Church members to express their views.

  • Draft Synod Minutes 11 October 2016
1 50th Synod of the Diocese of Sydney 3rd Ordinary Session Minutes of Proceedings of the Synod for Tuesday 11 October 2016 1. Assembly The Synod assembled in the Wesley Theatre at 3.15 pm. 2. Bible study The Rev Gary Koo led the Bible study. 3. Minutes The President signed the minutes for Monday 10 October 2016. 4. Answers to Questions 4.1 Distribution of funds raised by Anglicare in the Syrian and Iraqi Refugee appeal The Rev David Clarke asked the following question – How much of the $746,000 raised by Anglicare in the Syrian and Iraqi Refugee appeal has so far been distributed to parishes currently engaged in ministering to Syrian and Iraqi people? To which the President replied – In September 2015, I called upon the Sydney Diocese to come together to mount a prayerful, practical, sustained and effective response to assist refugees coming to Australia fleeing the Syrian conflict. As the lead organisation for this response, Anglicare launched the Archbishop’s Syrian Refugee Appeal and designed a program that addressed current gaps in service delivery, and which would involve wherever possible the involvement of parishes and individual Sydney Anglicans. Between September 2015 and May 2016, the appeal raised $746,000, enough to fully fund the program until July 2018. Parishes do not receive direct funding through this program, however resources are directed toward parish-based programs. The program involves – Parish-based English as a Second Language (ESL) classes; Community and parish-based Early Learning Through Play courses to prepare pre-school aged refugee children for kindergarten; Family support and trauma counselling through Anglicare’s Hope Counselling program; Training for parish volunteers in assisting refugees; and Assistance with material needs and transitional accommodation.

  • Porvoo Prayer Diary 2021
PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year. • Archdeacons' News
THE ARCHDEACONS’ FORUM for the Church of England and the Church in Wales Archdeacons’ News Issue no. 47 February 2020 from Cameron Watt Archdeacons’ National Development Officer Welcome to the first issue of the Archdeacons’ News of 2020. Over the past few months I have had the enormous privilege of getting to know many of the Archdeacons across England and Wales since starting this role. When I first spoke to Norman Boakes about this role, he waxed lyrical about both the work, but more importantly about the wonderful cohort of people who are called to Archidiaconal ministry. I must pay tribute to Norman, as my predecessor in this role. He built up the role and tirelessly championed Archdeacons across the Church of England and the Church in Wales. As this role develops I am fabulously supported by Husna Louise in Church House, Bishop Chris Goldsmith as the new Director of Ministry, and the Archdeacons’ Forum Executive which is very well led by Archdeacon Stephen Taylor. Over the coming years, I hope to be able to develop the support which is on offer to Archdeacons, and also to help to ensure that the collective wisdom of the Archdeacons is heard at all levels of our central church institutions. Outside of this role I am a part-time parish priest in a rural parish, and have found that combining these two roles keeps me grounded in both of them – long may that continue! The important thing is that I am here to support, pray for, and work alongside you – the Archdeacons who provide so much support, guidance and love for the work of God across our dioceses.
