EXCERPT OF SPEECH OF HON. SAMUEL DICKSTEIN, OF NET YORK

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

April 22, 1941

There are other individuals of this ilk who may be mentioned ft this time. There is, for instance, e gentlemen nrmed Girolamo Valenti, the editor of c 2 by 4 newspaper, a publication which borsts on its front page that it stends for liberty rnd democracy end against , dictators, and the "fifth column." This gentlemen has made some broad statements without substantiation. In fact, he went to the trouble of writing me r letter about it, to which letter I replied rnd suggested that he be good enough to furnish me with details of his charges. Instead of receiving a reply to my letter, I received his nev;spcper, in which there is en alleged answer offering to prove the charges before any investigating committee or tribunal. Thereafter, in the issue of his newspaper of April 19, he attempts to give some facts, but the alleged facts as therein given are purely a babbling collection of generalities. This is the very SEme gentleman whom I subpeneed in 1934 and whose testimony is now t matter of official record. The testimony then given was, of course, barren of all facts, purely hearsay, and of no value.

If we were to go r little further into the examination of Mr, Valenti's background, we will discover the t this gentlermn himself is a Communist end hes furthered the cause of communism in this country.

This is the record of Girolamo Valenti, the Communist provocrtor: Valenti was born April 16, 1892, at Vtlguarnera, Italy. His fcther wes tho owner of a sulphur mine. He attended elementary school at Valguarnerr and high school rnd college it Catrnia, Italy. Valenti came to the in 1911. He wasted no time in his activities of organizing r left-wing Italirn Socialist Federation in City - 1913 he assisted in organiz- ing left-wing lrbor unionsj 1917-19 he was editor of the left-wing Socirlist publication Avanti; 1919 he edited the L'< Folia; 1921 he edited La Parole del Popolo; 1923-30 Vrlenti pcrticipated in a number of left-wing strikes in .

He was the ruthor of the book Debs, c Political Prisoner, 1920; also c book of Third International, in 1920, rnd the Italian Socialist Lrbor Book in the years 1923-24.

In 1924 after the deeth of Giacomo Mattiotti, a Socialist deputy in Italy, Mr. Valenti started a public subscription in 1925 in his paper

II Nuovo Mondo in tho United States. The collection totrled about s^40,000.00 for the erection of a monument to Mattiotti's memory. Up to this date no monument hrs been erected, rnd no one knows whrt hrs hecome of the money thct was given by the working Den and women, including many humble families in this country. This is the type rnd character of the men who hrs been criticizing me. For his informrtion, as well cs for the information of the readers of his newspaper whom he has been feeding with the attacks on me, I want to mrke my strnd very clear. I rm against any individual, newspaper, or organization thrt seeks to spreed fascism, nazi-ism, or communism in the United States. I have elwcys opposed such movements, as my record in de- nouncing them again end again on the floor of the House will clearly show rnd will continue to do so. I cannot control the governments of other countries that may choose to establish Fascist governments in their own countries, but I will fight any groups or individuals who will try to import this type of government into our country. In 1930, at the Communist International Anti-Fascist Congress in Berlin of 250 representrtives of left-wing groups of some 20 countries, Vrlenti was present at this Congress. Henri Brrbussc, French Communist writer, was elected president. In 1930, Valonti was a member of the committee for the support of II Nuovo Fondo, the crmpcign publication issued in behalf of gaeco-Vanzetti, This publication was financed by the Communist Garlcnd Fund (American Furd for Public Service). On this committee was Louis F. Budenz, noted editor of Midwest Com- munist daily, Valenti hrs been r member of the Interne tionr.l Committee for Politicrl Prisoners, r Communist group.
