Fall 2019

Did you know the Friends are on Facebook? We are, thanks to Julianne Bancroft Los Alamitos-Rossmoor Hours Julianne grew up in Rossmoor and spent most of her free time at the library (pre-remodel, when the Monday -Thursday front door faced east toward the back of what was 10 am – 7 pm then the theater). She and her husband have three daughters who always participated in the summer Closed Friday program, first as readers and later as teen volunteers. When the Friends put out a call for a Saturday 9 am – 5 pm secretary, she decided to give something back to the library that had given so much to her and her Closed Sunday family, and stepped up. In her current role as Facebook administrator, she posts information about programs at the library, as well as general Inside: stories about and . President’s Message – Del Clark Hello Friends, Congrats to children’s librarian, Katie Dietzman, and staff for another smashing Summer Extravaganza! More than 1,000 kids and teens enjoyed the bonanza of activities including: logs; animal, balloon, juggling shows; crafts; story-times; and featuring “Showtime/ Movies”. Also, FOL’s summer book sale was a hit as hundreds of books were sold at bargain prices! Huge kudos go to our twin Book Store & Sales “Wonder Women”, Frieda Wray and Mary Holzgang and their army of volunteers whose efforts create FOL’s primary income stream! Exciting activities and programs are planned for the fall so say tuned! Happy Reading!

Relax and Read! Automatic Renewals Come to OCPL …Head Librarian Semra BIssel

It’s here and now. It’s great to announce that since July 16th if you have items checked out, don’t worry about remembering the date to return them. They will now be automatically renewed for you on their due date. Materials will be renewed up to five times! This can save you time in trying to remember the date of when you have to return materials that you checked out. The exceptions will be if items have holds, Interlibrary Loans, items checked out to homebound patrons, Lucky Day books, and if a patron is blocked. These are not eligible for renewals. Just a reminder though that charges will still apply for lost/damaged materials, items returned late after the fifth renewal, and items returned late that were ineligible for renewal. The notification that is sent to you will list the items renewed for you so that you are aware and the items that were ineligible for renewal will also be listed. The text message says that items were renewed and please check your account. If you are ever not sure about items on your library card or have any questions, please feel free to call the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Library at 562-430-1048.

Wanted! Wanted! Volunteers The Library can use assistance with numerous tasks including but not limited to doing shelf checks of items from lists/reports, preparation for craft programs, paper cutting projects, activity prep assistance, display designing, book trough work, magazines or newspapers organization, and many more exciting tasks and duties. All adult volunteers must pass a background check before volunteering work starts. For anyone interested in volunteer working in the Library, please come by the Library or call the Library at 562-430-1048 for more details. We’ll look forward to hearing from you soon.

Does Anyone Know the Story of the Little Free Libraries? Here in Rossmoor , I’ve seen three—one on Montecito, one in Kempton Park and one on Martha Ann. I’ve been told there is one on Silver Fox just south of Walker Lee and one on Yellowtail. Also College Park East has one on Heather Street. The one on the left is on the website below as being located at 2752 Copa de Oro. Todd Herbert Bol (January 2, 1956 – October 18, 2018) was the creator and founder of Little Free Library, a global public nonprofit organization. In 2009, he used wood from his old garage door to make the first library-on-a-stick as a tribute to his mother, who had been a schoolteacher. According to Wikipedia, as of 2016, the project had expanded to include Little Free Libraries in 85 countries. According to a 2018 article, there are now more than 75,000 Little Free Libraries in 88 countries.

From the website, littlefreelibrary.org, comes this information:

Our staff is dedicated to increasing book access and forging community connections. We help people around the world start and maintain Little Free Library book exchanges. Watch the adjacent video to get a 30-second introduction to how Little Free Libraries work, and how you can start one, too! We provide support to our volunteer Little Free Library stewards by providing free Library building instructions, online resources and ongoing support from Little Free Library staff, access to free or discounted books through our partners, and an online store that offers Library kits and pre-built Library models. We also maintain a world map of registered Little Free Libraries to help people find and share books wherever they are, and we donate Little Free Libraries to communities where books are scarce through our Impact Library Program.

If you know of other Little Free Libraries or how they came to be in our area, feel free to email me, Deb L, at [email protected].

Outside the Bookstore: Sale Coming Soon …Frieda Wray Summer is soon over and Fall is fast approaching. We have two Outside Sales remaining this year; our next sale is September 19th and 21st - watch for Halloween and Thanksgiving books on a cart. We will put out the Christmas books at the November sale on November 21st and 23rd . They will be on well-marked carts which will be in the Patio after the sale. Have a wonderful Fall - lots of great travel books in the Cabinet. A great place to find someone else's take on a place or trip and also field guides for the areas, hiking trails, camping etc. If you need help finding something at the Sales, look for me (Frieda) or Becky or Kathryn in Haven at the Book Sale and we will take you to the right place. See you there.

Book Store Featured Friends This is a “behind the scenes” glimpse of two of the hardest working volunteers ever. Along with Frieda Wray, they not only sort the book donations, they set up, take down and work at all the outdoor sales held every other month at the library. Kathryn St. John was born in Glendale but grew up in Seattle, returning to the San Fernando Valley at the age of 10. She attended Reseda High School and UCLA. Her hubby Joe passed away in 2008 but she has a big family: two sons, three grandsons and three granddaughters. She started out as a social worker then received an ASID in Interior Design working locally with Aegean Designing Whims then went independent. As if volunteering with the Friends (she is also the Secretary) isn’t enough, Kathryn is very active with her church, Cornerstone in Long Beach. She visits shut-ins, is a teaching assistant for after-school bible school and leads a team that creates crafts for Pre-school/first grade Sunday school. She also leads a prayer group in her home for widows. Reading (of course) is a hobby, as is travel, hiking and aerobics. Her bucket list includes New Zealand, Australia and Chile/Patagonia. Becky Sarkisian is another dynamo volunteer that we are so fortunate to have. Born in Marin, she moved to Vacaville where she grew up, attending Sonoma State University. She and husband Sarkis have two boys, ages 17 and 15 along with a 12- year-old cat Nala. From time to time the boys help with the set-up and take down during the sales. She moved to Los Angeles in 1990 to work with her dad running his employment agency and now is a stay-at-home-mom often helping her husband in his business. She has volunteered at the kids’ school and with National League of Young Men. You can find Becky on Tuesday and Thursday mornings sorting and organizing books for the sales. She loves to read, hike, travel and play games. Her favorite parks are Yellowstone and Sequoia, but her favorite trips were a seven-day horseback ride in Italy and going to Costa Rica with their kids. Becky loves supporting the library and meeting such wonderful people who all have a special interest and love of books. 6

College and Financial Aid Workshop Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Library is proud to present an upcoming program on college planning. Christopher Bissonnette from SOFA (Society of Financial Awareness) will host this financial aid workshop for parents and high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors on Tuesday, September 10th. In this workshop, you will learn about FAFSA/CSS profile, how to fully understand the college financial aid system, and which colleges could potentially provide the most generous financial aid packages. You’ll also learn how it is possible to send your child to an expensive private college for less than a state university and how to minimize “out-of-pocket” costs. Mr. Bissonnette will cover the best strategies on how to pay for college in the most cost-efficient manner with aim at avoiding personal financial strain even if your student is not eligible for need based aid. Families only need to attend one session, either 5 or 6 pm. Registration not required.

Membership Matters! ….Sharon Westafer It’s hard to believe summer is coming to an end! We’re getting ready for another great year of outdoor book sales and great programs, which are supported by memberships as well as by bookstore and outdoor sales. Your membership and support encourage the Friends by showing how much the library and its programs are appreciated. Thank you for supporting the Los Alamitos-Rossmoor library, a wonderful resource in the community. As you enjoy these last days of summer and start preparing for the fall season, please take a moment to renew your membership if you haven’t already done so. You can mail in your renewal, drop it by the library check-out desk or give it to the bookstore staff.
