FOR THE CHURCH AT WITTENBERG [FORMULA MISSAE ET COMMUNIONIS PRO ECCLESIA WITTEMBERGENSIS] 1523 FORMULA MISSAE ET COMMUNIONIS 1523 INTRODUCTION Nicolaus Hausmann, pastor primarius of the Marien kirche at Zwickau and a most devoted friend of Luther, had written repeatedly to him requesting advice and direction in matters connected with church worship. One of these requests had been for an order for saying mass which would conform with the principles of the movement in which they both were so <leeply concerned. Luthre had replied more or less promptly to all of Haus mann's requests except the last, and only after repeated urg ing by letter, through Stephen Roth, who was studying theology at Wittenberg, and through other friends did Luther meet Hausmann's hope and plea. Luther sent Hausmann a copy of a pamphlet 011 another subject on November 13. 1523, and in the accompanying letter told him that he would send to him a copy of the form of mass which he proposed for the ttse of the Wittenberg church. This may have been ready for printing at the time of writing this letter, for a few weeks later, on December 4, Luther sent Hausmann a printed copy of the Formula mis sae et communionis pro ecclesia Wittembergensi. It reached him 011 December 11, and its arrival moved Hausmann to expressions of gratitude, joy, and satisfaction.

  • The 7 International Seminar Took Place from February 24 Until March
The 7th International Seminar took place from February 24th until March 9th, 2013. Theme: "Reading the Bible contextually through Luther's lenses". Teachers: Prof. Dr. Karl-Wilhelm Niebuhr, Jena, Germany, Dr. Kenneth Mtata, Zimbabwe LWF Study Secretary for Theology in the Department for Theology and Public Witness, and Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Großhans, Münster, Germany Here are the statements of participants: Dr. Russell Vardell, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Northern Texas – Northern Louisiana Mission Area: Surrounded by the spirit of Luther and the churches of Luther in both ancient stone and in the living testimony of leaders from around the world, I have learned more about both our historical heritage and our mission in the world today. Our continued call to bring the Scriptures into diverse global contexts was enhanced by this experience. Thanks be to God! Gunilla Aquilon Elmquist, Church of Sweden, Lund Stift: These two weeks as part of the 7th Luther Seminar have been a great experience for me. Meeting people from so many different parts of the world and discovering that, even though we come from very different contexts, we nonetheless have so much in common. This has also led me to see my own church in a totally new perspective, yet part of the whole of the Lutheran family. I feel so re-energized for ministry, and cannot wait to go home to share all my new experiences and understanding of what it’s like to be a Lutheran in today’s global context. Meega Johnsundram, India Evangelical Lutheran Church: What my forefathers could not see for the past three generations, the Lord helped me to see and witness the great Reformation history seeded in Wittenberg.

  • Statement in Solidarity with Our Children and Youth
STATEMENT IN SOLIDARITY WITH OUR CHILDREN AND YOUTH Our children and youth are like a young Jeremiah prophesying to the people: For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jer. 29:11) Recently, the students, faculty and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida experienced tragedy. Seventeen people - students and teachers - were killed by a 19-year- old shooter. In response, students have invited their teachers, families and allies around the nation to join with them for a March for Our Lives on March 24, 2018 in Washington, DC; calling our country into a deeper conversation about school safety and second amendment rights and responsibilities. We recognize this incident is the latest in a long list of tragic shootings in our country and young people have been calling for protest and change for many years. Some of those young voices have been ignored or silenced because of racial and economic injustice. We cannot let that reality keep us from acting now. Adopted in 1994, the ELCA social message on Community Violence remains sadly relevant today. The message speaks about the causes of violence as complex and pervasive, and of how violence breeds violence. In proclaiming the forgiveness and love of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the church addresses the root of violence while being committed to social actions that respond directly to violence and the people it affects. From the Social Message: In the face of violence, God’s resolve for peace in human communities is unshakable.

  • A Gallery of Portraits: Lwf General Secretaries Since 1947
From the LWF Institutional Memory DPO/Archive services lutheranworld.org A GALLERY OF PORTRAITS: LWF GENERAL SECRETARIES SINCE 1947 1. Sylvester Michelfelder Country of origin: New Washington, Ohio, USA Date of birth: 27.10.1889 Date of death: 30.12.1951 Period of mandate: 1947-1951 Short biography: From German descent, Michelfelder was not an academic theologian. It was his skill as pastor, organizer and team leader that caused Ralph Long, director of the National Lutheran Council in New York to send him as commissioner of the American Section of the Lutheran World Convention to the rising World Council of Churches. On 18 July 1945, he arrived with his wife in Geneva after having crossed the ocean on the Miraposa and travelled by rail from Cherbourg which gave him ample evidence of emergency needs in Europe. Operations in Germany in the early post-war period was the first task of Michelfelder with led into close ties of confidence and networks of cooperation with German church leaders such as Hanns Lilje and Hans Meiser. His major accomplishment became then the careful preparation of the first Assembly of the LWF which represented international interaction between sisters and brothers of the same faith. Michelfelder had clear ideas for an Assembly with a three-part program: confessing the truth in a confused world, concentrated on the Word, the church and the sacraments, a section on evangelism, stewardship, foreign missions and aid operation and a final section on facing the problems in a troubled world. His abilities as an administrator became apparent particularly in two connections: when he prepared and led the First Assembly and when he led in the formation of a functional structure for the whole LWF, the Geneva Secretariat and the national committees.

  • May 29, 2020 Special Edition of What Matters ELCA Bishops Respond to Recent Murders of Black Americans
May 29, 2020 Special Edition of What Matters ELCA Bishops Respond to Recent Murders of Black Americans Dear Partners in Ministry, In these past days I have been part of conversations among bishops leading to this attached statement, signed by every one of the ELCA’s Conference of Bishops. While the week’s killing in Minneapolis is the most recent, it is a reminder of many others… and a reminder that we continue to be the inheritors of a 400-year legacy of conflicted race relations, and the conscious and unconscious racial attitudes and behaviors that are part of this culture. As God’s people, we are called to stand with all who are marginalized, and called to confess that we have not always done so. And, finally, we are called to work for the changes in individual, cultural, and institutional patterns of behavior that perpetuate racism and privilege that plague us. May God’s spirit be with us in that work. Peter Rogness Bishop South-Central Synod of Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Church in America [email protected] What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8). The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) reaffirms its commitment to combating racism and white supremacy following the recent murders of Black Americans. Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Dreasjon (Sean) Reed, and George Floyd were our neighbors. Ahmaud Arbery was chased down, shot, and killed by a retired police officer and his son while jogging in Brunswick, Ga.
