However, the third episode in the saga, Return of the Jedi (1983), was received less favorably than its predecessors by critics. This article will examine historical record and analyze aspects of syuzhet (‘plot’) and fabula (‘story’) (BORDWELL, 1985, pp. 49-50) in the screenplay in order to establish why Return of the Jedi works less successfully as a narrative than the first two films. The results of the investigation suggest that this was due to a fundamental philosophical conflict between screenwriters George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan. DARLING COMPANION is written by Meg Kasdan and Lawrence Kasdan and directed by Lawrence Kasdan. It stars Kevin Kline, Diane Keaton, Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins, Elisabeth Moss, Mark Duplass, Ayelet Zurer and Sam Shepherd. The film is produced by Anthony Bregman for Likely Story, Lawrence Kasdan for Kasdan Pictures and Elizabeth Redleaf for Werc Werk Works. Christine Walker, Meg Kasdan and John Kelly served as executive producers. In DARLING COMPANION, Beth (Keaton) saves a bedraggled lost dog from the side of the freeway on a wintry day in Denver. Struggling with her distracted, self-involved husband Joseph (Kline) and an empty nest at home, Beth forms a special bond with the rescued animal. When Joseph loses the dog after a wedding at their vacation home in the Rockies, the distraught Beth enlists the help of the few remaining guests and a mysterious young woman (Zurer) in a frantic search. Abstract Lawrence Kasdan was one of the most successful American filmmakers of the 1980s. His third work as director, Silverado (1985), has been credited with reviving the Western pic- ture after a decade of dormancy, eschewing 1970s revisionism for a more classic approach to the genre. However, this paper will argue that Kasdan may have been influenced more by Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai than by any Hollywood cowboy film. It will first ex- amine Kasdan’s style and concerns pre-Silverado, before outlining some of the similarities that samurai and Western films historically share. Finally, this paper will highlight some of the specific ways in which Kasdan’s Silverado paid homage to Kurosawa’s Seven Samu- rai, through plot, character and theme.     Make him Sweat By Christina Harlin, your Fearless Young Orphan Body Heat (1981) Directed by Lawrence Kasdan My thanks to my friend, elusively known as the Mysterious Stranger, a fellow fan of film noir who reminded me of this excellent neo-noir classic, plus a few others we’ll be looking at in the weeks to come. How many of y’all were around in 1981, when this little beauty was released? It caused quite a stir and made Kathleen Turner a sex goddess, and to my recollection, spawned a revival of the style that lasted for years. Body Heat is such classic film noir material that it almost serves as a specially crafted “example,” in addition to being a rather entertaining movie in itself. I’ll summarize the plot and, if you haven’t seen it or don’t remember it, you’ll be surprised at how archetypal it all sounds. Ned Racine (William Hurt) is a sleazy lawyer in Florida – he’s not a stupid man but he’s careless and his law practice shows it. He’s been reprimanded by the court for mistakes. He doesn’t like his clients. He’s full of crap, basically. Also, he likes the ladies. There’s a heat wave going on and crime is up, says Ned’s cop friend. The heat makes people crazy. Ned tries his charms on a fine, classy specimen he meets at an outdoor concert. This is Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner). She’s rich and manicured and probably far out of his league, yet they sense a likeness in each other.

    DON’T LET THE FUTURE PASS YOU BY ITERATIVE DYSTOPIAS ON THE POSTMILLENNIAL SCREEN Blythe Victoria Chandler Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2015 School of Culture and Communication University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper ABSTRACT In the decade 2001-2010, films which presented spectacular futures dominated the box office. In contrast, Code 46 (2003), 2046 (2004) and Inception (2010) conceived immediately recognisable tomorrows, pessimistic futures firmly rooted in the socio- historical present. Despite their divergent production backgrounds, differing story arcs and disparate aesthetics, this thesis contends that these texts are key, early examples of a new subcycle of films it titles Iterative Dystopia. Using a social science fiction criticism methodology, this thesis conducts an interdisciplinary investigation which draws on science fiction genre analysis, dystopian narrative theory and contemporary sociological concepts to define the formal characteristics of the collection and offers fresh readings of the texts. This thesis finds that Iterative Dystopias are defined by the theme of perpetual liminality, an original concept developed following the work of sociologist Arpad Szakolczai. Iterative Dystopia’s perpetually liminal protagonists trace iterative paths across their narrative arcs, searching for an alternative to the continuous transitions of lives lived in this in-between state. Their goal is personal. They just want a place to call home. In direct contrast to the conventional dystopian protagonist, these characters are seeking their utopia within the familiar. These characters are, however, thwarted in their attempts to find a sense of belonging. Through a close textual analysis, this thesis explores three of the narrative environments in which these characters conduct their quotidian existence: the home, the relationship and the mind; and establishes that Iterative Dystopia’s protagonists are frustrated by paradoxes.
