The students will read and discuss the “Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral” (BCP pages 876 – 877) in order to appreciate the essentials of an Anglican identity. DOING THE LAMBETH WALK The request We, the Bishops, Clergy and Laity of the Province of Canada, in Triennial Synod assembled, desire to represent to your Grace, that in consequence of the recent decisions of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the well-known case respecting the Essays and Reviews, and also in the case of the Bishop of Natal and the Bishop of Cape Town, the minds of many members of the church have been unsettled or painfully alarmed; and that doctrines hitherto believed to be scriptural, undoubtedly held by the members of the Church of England and Ireland, have been adjudicated upon by the Privy Council in such a way as to lead thousands of our brethren to conclude that, according to this decision, it is quite compatible with membership in the Church of England to discredit the historical facts of Holy Scripture, and to disbelieve the eternity of future punishment1 So began the 1865 letter from the Canadians to Charles Thomas Longley, Archbishop of Canterbury and Primate of All England. The letter concluded In order, therefore, to comfort the souls of the faithful, and reassure the minds of wavering members of the church, … we humbly entreat your Grace, …to convene a national synod of the bishops of the Anglican Church at home and abroad, who, attended by one or more of their presbyters or laymen, learned in ecclesiastical law, as their advisers, may meet together, and, under the guidance of the Holy Ghost, take such counsel and adopt such measures as may be best fitted to provide for the present distress in such synod, presided over by your Grace. -

The Investiture Contest and the Rise of Herod Plays in the Twelfth Century John Marlin Since the publication of O. B. Hardison’s Christian Rite and Christian Drama in the Middle Ages,1 E. K. Chambers’s and Karl Young’s evolutionary models for liturgical drama’s development2 have been discarded. Yet the question remains of accounting for what Rosemary Woolf calls its “zig-zag” development,3 its apogee being the twelfth century. The growth and decline of Christmas drama is particularly intriguing, as most of Young’s samples of the simple shepherd plays, the Officium Pastores, come from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, while the earliest Christmas play he documents, from an eleventh-century Freising Cathedral manuscript, is a complete play about Herod and the Magi, the Officium Stellae. -

Ecclesiastical Judges Complaints Procedure 1. Chancellors and Deputy Chancellors in the Church of England hold judicial office, as does the Dean of Arches and Auditor. By reason of the independence of the judiciary, any complaint concerning them must relate to misconduct in the performance of their office, and not to the substance of the decision made (including case management decisions) in court proceedings. By way of example, matters of misconduct might include rude or bullying behaviour, or inordinate delay in the conduct of proceedings. 2. Any complaint about an ecclesiastical judge shall be submitted in writing to the Vicar- General of the Province concerned at the address below.1 It must be sent within three months of the matter complained of, although the Vicars-General may entertain a complaint made after that time in exceptional circumstances. 3. The complaint shall contain: • the name of the complainant and their contact details (including their postal address and email address); • the name of the person against whom the complaint is made; • the date of the matter complained about; • the nature of the proceedings involved; • full details of the complaint (ie what the person said or did or did not do that it is alleged amounts to misconduct); • details of the exceptional circumstances relied on if the complaint is outside the three month time period. 4. If the complaint on its face could not amount to misconduct, the Vicar-General shall dismiss it and shall notify the complainant and the person complained about accordingly, giving reasons. 5. If the complaint could amount to misconduct, the Vicars-General (or if either is conflicted, a duly appointed substitute who shall be a senior chancellor from the province nominated by the Dean)2 shall investigate the complaint in such manner as they deem appropriate and in accordance with the principles of natural justice. -
The Transformations of a Buddhist Symbol of Evil
ABSTRACT MALLEABLE MāRA: THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF A BUDDHIST SYMBOL OF EVIL by Michael David Nichols Despite its importance to the legend of the Buddha’s enlightenment and numerous Buddhist texts, a longitudinal, diachronic analysis of the symbol of Māra has never been done. This thesis aims to fill that gap by tracing the Evil One’s development in three spheres. Chapter one deals with Māra in the Nikāya texts, in which the deity is portrayed as a malign being diametrically opposed to the Buddha and his teachings. Chapter two discusses how that representation changes to ambivalence in certain Mahāyāna sūtras due to increased emphasis on the philosophical concepts of emptiness and non-duality. Finally, chapter three charts the results of a collision between the two differing representations of Māra in Southeast Asia. The concludes that the figure of Māra is malleable and reflects changes in doctrinal and sociological situations. Diocese of Durham: Diocesan Synod, May 21 2010 Presidential Address: The Bishop of Durham, the Rt Revd N. T. Wright, DD Some of you, older synodical hands than I, have seen bishops come and go over a long period, and no doubt you tick them off one by one in your mind, perhaps even carving another notch on the end of the pew. But for me this is a strange moment, and also sad. This isn’t the moment for farewells; we shall come to that in July. But this will be my last Diocesan Synod, and I want to pay grateful tribute to those who have faithfully carried the administrative work of the Diocese over the last seven years, not least the Diocesan Secretary and his colleagues in the office, the successive Chairs of the Houses of Clergy and Laity, and the DBF and especially its Chair, and to you in Synod past and present. Our new Diocesan Annual Report speaks powerfully, in its style and presentation as well as its content, of the energy and clarity upon which we now can call, so that even in financially challenging circumstances we can hold our heads up and do a cheerful and professional job. My deep gratitude to all those involved. I shall say more ‘thank-yous’ on another occasion. But today, as we reflect on synodical business in particular, there is one theme which I see as urgently necessary. I chose Romans 14 as our reading for this morning’s worship to set the stage for this, and I’d be grateful if we could turn back to it now. -

It is not always easy to assess, but we often recognise the flavour of a life becoming more godly. • Commitment Commitment itself has several features, including: commitment to God, to seeking God’s kingdom, to Christ’s body the Church. • Partnership Working with other churches, locally and globally, with schools, community groups, people, organisations for the common good, peace, justice and a healthy environment.
