He is the author of “The New Era of Wealth” and “It’s Not As Bad As You Think,” published by McGraw-Hill and John Wiley & Sons, respectively. A Tale of Two Economies Corporate profits are at record high levels, yet unemployment remains elevated. Investors who fear inflation have driven gold prices to astounding highs, but interest rates are at lows typically seen during periods of deflation. Consumer confidence is at rock bottom, but consumer spending has never been higher. Fear is in the air, but the economy has grown for 10 consecutive quarters. Mr. Wesbury will help you navigate these volatile waters. His message: Don’t let the fear and doomsayers get you down; the economy is getting better all the time. 2:05 – 3:00 pm Vanguard Keynote “Advisor’s Alpha” Joel Dickson, Vanguard Investment Strategy Group Grand Ballroom A-G CE Credit: 1 CFP®, CIMA Joel Dickson, Ph.D., is a Senior Investment Strategist and a Principal in Vanguard Investment Strategy Group, where he analyzes trends and developments in the exchange-traded fund market and provides research and commentary on related issues. His academic research focused on tax-efficient investing, and he co-authored with John B. Shoven the seminal work on the topic, “Ranking Mutual Funds on an After-Tax Basis.” Previously, Mr. Dickson was head of the Active Quantitative Equity Group within Vanguard Quantitative Equity Department and worked in other positions with Vanguard. Before joining Vanguard in 1996, he worked as a staff economist at the Federal Reserve Board. Mr. Dickson earned a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University and an A.B. from Washington University in St. Louis. Advisor’s Alpha The changing of the guard: Evolution of the value proposition for advice. Showing clients how you add value to the relationship can be difficult, particularly in down markets. That’s because alpha traditionally is measured in terms of how you perform against the market. Learn how to redefine alpha as the value you bring to the client relationship. Mr. Dickson focuses not on performance but your ability to remove emotion from financial decision-making and hone in on the important components of portfolio construction such as asset allocation and location. 3:00 – 3:15 pm Break 3:20 - 4:15 pm Hartford Keynote “In the Company of Strangers” John Diehl, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc.
