Born on 18th June 2015, Bombay Bengalis or BB, as is now fondly referred to. The initial few weeks was restricted to chatting in the WhatsApp group and adding new members. Bombay Bengalis held its first meet at the historic Mohammed Ali Road on 1st July 2015 with approximately 15-20 members. Subsequently BB has held 38 such meets in the last 15 months. Today BB has grown from strength to strength and has 150+ members in its WhatsApp group apart from 1500+ odd members and followers on its Facebook page. However, BB has not limited its activities to meets and chats alone. From organizing essential items for the underprivileged to purchasing Rakhi’s & Diya’s for terminally ill patients, BB has been associated with various other cultural as well as social activities since it’s inception. BB was also proud to launch ‘Probashe’, a film on ‘Bombay te Bangali’ to mark its 1st Anniversary (Link: https://youtu.be/zvywrjA2HD8 ). In the coming months, BB will be associated with a host of more social and cultural programs. Articles Global Media Journal – Indian Edition/ISSN 2249-5835 Sponsored by the University of Calcutta/ www.caluniv.ac.in Summer Issue / June 2012 Vol. 3/No.1 PORTRAYAL OF SEXUAL MINORITIES IN HINDI FILMS Sanjeev Kumar Sabharwal Assistant Professor Amity School of Communication Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow Campus, Uttar Pradesh, India Website: http://www.amity.edu/lucknow Email:[email protected] and Reetika Sen Academic Coordinator Amity School of Communication Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow Campus, Uttar Pradesh, India Website: http://www.amity.edu/lucknow Email: [email protected] Abstract: Sexual minority or Alternative sexuality comprises of all those people who fall under the categories of Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, Eunuchs. This paper basically compares the portrayal of sexual minorities in Mainstream and Alternative Hindi Cinema. It talks about how Mainstream Hindi cinema which is the most widely distributed cinema in India and abroad has traditionally adopted an attitude of denial or mockery towards LGBTQ community. Representations of sexual Minorities have veered between the sarcasm, comic and the criminal. Where as Alternative Cinema which is confined to film festivals and a handful selected group of viewers portrays sexual minorities in more realistic manner and is successful in raising, expressing & suggesting possible solutions to their problems in more effective manner as compared to the main stream cinema. This is a qualitative as well as quantitative research and the methodology adopted to find out the answers to the questions is content analysis of four Hindi films and survey. Two films of mainstream and two of alternative cinema were selected randomly. Both secondary and primary data was collected, from various reliable sources like journals, websites, articles, movie reviews of different newspapers etc.

  • Madhur Bhandarkar and the New Bollywood Social
CHAPTER 14 Madhur Bhandarkar and the New Bollywood Social Ulka Anjaria adhur Bhandarkar is often referenced as distinct from main- Mstream directors for his disruption of Bollywood generic conventions, evinced in his ‘dark and real’ stories (I. Chatterjee 2014) on ‘serious issues’ (Sharma 2014: 52), the lack of conventional song-and-dance sequences in his films (Garwood 2006: 177–180), his representation of queer sexuality (Singh 2014: 95, 105) and his heroine-centred stories (Moin 2014: 652). But despite these quali- ties and the interest in Hindi film studies in the margins of the mainstream industry and in feminism and sexuality in Bollywood, there is surprisingly little scholarship that investigates the aesthet- ics and generic qualities of Bhandarkar’s films. He seems to fall into a gap that has arisen in the field in the recent years between the realist impulse evident in film-makers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Abhishek Chaubey, Anurag Kashyap and others, who tend to move away from Bollywood conventions, and the lavish over- the-top formula films that define a classically Bollywood aesthetic such as those of Yash Chopra and Karan Johar. Yet this in-betweenness might be seen as a particular mode of aesthetic, formal and political experiment in what many identify Copyright © 2017. Sage Publications Pvt. Ltd. All rights reserved.
