Choksi, Ph.D. Holocaust and Partition: A Celluloid Test for History Doctoral Dissertation 1 CHAPTER – 1 Introduction 1.1 History and Cinema – Interdisciplinarity History and Cinema as major disciplines of knowledge and study share a complementary yet an intricate relationship. “History” is a Greek word, which means enquiry, research, exploration or information. The Greeks were the earliest to define History. It was Dionysius of Halicarnassus, who gave us the idea that History is philosophy teaching by examples. Aristotle further suggests that history is an account of the unchanging past in the sense that human nature does not change, and that all activities that originate with the same intentions and motives differ only in the degree of details and not in their basic nature. Polybius and Thucydides think that history is a story of things worthy of being remembered, reminding us that all and sundry events do not constitute history, and that only unique, significant and remarkable happenings would figure in it. Professor Findlay’s view that, ‘History is any sequence of events traced in their relations’ introduces the new element that past events must be judged in their correct perspective. Professor Maitland has further improved our knowledge by saying, ‘What men have done and said, above all what they have thought-that is History’. Renier has a new dimension to add when he says that history is the story of men living in societies. Lord Acton gave a different twist to history when he said, ‘History is the unfolding story of Human freedom’. Turgot and Condorcet developed the idea of progress, a concept that heralded the dawn of true history, bringing unity and synthesis to history. But the most significant definition among all the Western scholars is that of Ernest Bernheim, who says, ‘History is a science that investigates and presents in their context of psycho-physical causality the facts determined by space and time of the evolution of men in their individual, typical and collective activity as social beings’. This definition has touched on all fundamental activities of historical pursuit. It is a science because it embodies Vidushi B. Choksi, Ph.D. Holocaust and Partition: A Celluloid Test for History Doctoral Dissertation 2 systematized knowledge based on realities of life and about occurrences and happenings that have actually taken place, and not based on myth or imagination. (Collingwood, 1978) Cinema as a document reveals something about the time in which it was made and released – it is also important to recognize that films often attempt to take on the role of the historian. As per Hayden White’s suggestion that the work of the historian is not far removed from that of the story teller, then films – particularly those that adhere to principles of realism and verisimilitude – would appear to have the potential to be exemplary histories, promising and unrivalled ability to bring the past to life in a way that written histories cannot. However, there are problems with this simplistic view of the movies. Certainly, there is a strong case to be made for acknowledging the important role movies have played in creating and informing common understandings of history. Paul B. Weinstein summarizes the issue succinctly: ‘think about which has made a greater impression on the mass consciousness, myriad scholarly studies of the Normandy invasion or Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan?’ (2001) But does the fact that movies represent a more popularly accessible route to narratives about the past mean that we should grant the same status – as a form of valid knowledge about the past – to feature cinema as to scholarly written histories? One response to this question is to point out that, despite the widespread assumption that these supposedly rigorous, written histories possess greater objectivity than feature films, these histories are also the product of human agency and so are equally susceptible to distortion. However, the political perspective of the historian may be only one of several factors that can lead to a less- than-rigorous treatment of ‘factual’ data in all histories. The often tenuous relation between ‘hard facts’ and the historical narratives that are developed around them may be an effect of what Fredric Jameson has observed about history; that although history itself is not a text or a narrative it is something that is never encountered in unmediated form, and certainly not in a form that is immune to the influence of political ideologies.

The Sind Provincial Muslim League had passed a resolution on 10 October, 1938, urging the right of political self-government for the two largest religious groups of India, Muslims and Hindus, even before the passage of the Lahore Resolution for Pakistan in 1940. Secondly, the Sindh Legislative Assembly followed suit and passed a resolution in support of Pakistan in March 1943. Thirdly, it was the first Muslim-majority province whose members of the Legislature opted to join Pakistan on 26 June 1947. Fourthly, despite personal jealousies, tribal conflicts, thrust for power, the political leadership in Sindh helped Jinnah to achieve Pakistan. But few leaders of Sindh not only left the Muslim League, denied the two nation theory and ended up with the idea of SindhuDesh(Independent Sindh vis a vis Pakistan).While investigating other dimensions of the Pakistan Movement and the role of Sindhi leaders this paper will also analyze the inconsistency of some of the Sindhi leaders regarding their position and ideologies.

It was written by Kaifi Azmi and Shama Zaidi, based on an unpublished short story by a famous Urdu writer Ismat Chughtai. This controversial film has won several national awards in 1974 including a National Integration award. This political narrative deals with the plight of a North Indian Muslim businessman Salim Mirza and his family in 1947 in Agra. He is a patriot and a Muslim shoemaker, struggles to survive in this pathetic and critical condition of communal riots. He is in a dilemma either to live in India or to emigrate to Pakistan like his other family members. The Mirza family suffers for not doing anything wrong in this post-partition environment. They could neither manage their business nor got the job. The social and marital relations are affected. Salim Mirza’s elder son Baqar moves to Pakistan with his family. His daughter Amina is frustrated having two affairs with her cousins and committed suicide.

This article offers an in-depth analysis of sectarianism and religious intolerance and their direct role in the current chaotic state of Pakistan. This article revolves around the two main research questions including the role of religion in the state of Pakistan as well as the evidences depicting sectarian violence in Pakistan. The main objective is to analyze the future situation of the rampant sectarian condition in the society and to study the role of Pakistan’s government so far. Qualitative methodology using primary as well as secondary sources are used to gather the data. Post-dictatorship era, after 2007, is being analyzed in this article, keeping in view the history of sectarian violence, future and stability of the state. Last comments lead to the recommendations and ways to tackle the sectarian divide and religious extremism. The researchers conclude that religion is core at the Pakistan’s nationalism however, religious extremism weakens national and social cohesion and also divides loyalties. There is a need for strict blasphemy laws, banning hate speeches which incites the violence and most importantly, eradicating poverty and unemployment, so no foreign elements can bribe anyone for sectarian terror within the state. These are some of the names that come to mind when we think of the Progressive Writers’ Movement and modern Urdu literature. But how many people know that every one of these writers was also involved with the Bombay film indus- try and was closely associated with film directors, actors, singers and pro- ducers? Ismat Chughtai’s husband Shahid Latif was a director and he and Ismat Chughtai worked together in his lifetime. After Shahid’s death Ismat Chughtai continued the work alone. In all, she wrote scripts for twelve films, the most notable among them ◊iddµ, Buzdil, Sån® kµ ≤µ∞y≥, and Garm Hav≥. She also acted in Shyam Benegal’s Jun∑n. Khawaja Ahmed Abbas made a name for himself as director and producer for his own films and also by writing scripts for some of Raj Kapoor’s best- known films. Manto, Krishan Chandar and Bedi also wrote scripts for the Bombay films, while all of the above-mentioned poets provided lyrics for some of the most alluring and enduring film songs ever to come out of India. Much has been written about the Punjab and the creation of West Pakistan; by contrast, little is known about the partition of Bengal. This remarkable book by an acknowledged expert on the subject assesses partition’s huge social, economic and political consequences.     Remembering Partition: Violence, Nationalism and History in India Gyanendra Pandey CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS Remembering Partition Violence, Nationalism and History in India Through an investigation of the violence that marked the partition of British India in 1947, this book analyses questions of history and mem- ory, the nationalisation of populations and their pasts, and the ways in which violent events are remembered (or forgotten) in order to en- sure the unity of the collective subject – community or nation. Stressing the continuous entanglement of ‘event’ and ‘interpretation’, the author emphasises both the enormity of the violence of 1947 and its shifting meanings and contours. The book provides a sustained critique of the procedures of history-writing and nationalist myth-making on the ques- tion of violence, and examines how local forms of sociality are consti- tuted and reconstituted by the experience and representation of violent events. It concludes with a comment on the different kinds of political community that may still be imagined even in the wake of Partition and events like it. GYANENDRA PANDEY is Professor of Anthropology and History at Johns Hopkins University.
