This storied venue hosted the Bob Hope Classic for 49 years. One of the first golf real-estate developments in the Coachella Valley, Bermuda Dunes is a vibrant community with a membership dedicated to keeping facilities updated and ensuring that the club remains competitive and highly successful today and always. Those who know and love this golf course—and there are many across America—will be pleased to know that Bermuda Dunes is back in the Bob Hope Classic rotation for next year. Bermuda Dunes has rightfully garnered the respect and admiration of many for its golf course, its social and dining facilities and for its fascinating history that is second to none. Read all about it in our cover feature starting on page 10. Speaking of the Bob Hope Classic, we welcome Larry Thiel, the Classic’s new chairman, to the desert. With more than 30 years experience in sports management and private club operations, Thiel brings a wealth of knowledge and business acumen to the Classic. He formerly served as president of the Jack Nicklaus Management Group, where his duties included overseeing operation of the Memorial Tournament. He was also executive director of The International tournament at Castle Pines in Colorado, widely known as the only PGA Tour event to use the Stableford scoring system. Thiel will work to secure new sponsorships for the Classic and to bring the venerable tournament back to its prominent position among PGA Tour events. Read more starting on page 40. A FEW words by way of preface appear necessary, if only to explain the presence of Pau, Biarritz and Cannes among " British " Golf Links. When the title was selected, the intention was to confine the book to links on the British Islands. In course oF its preparation, it was sug- gested that it would add to the interest of the book if some account and views were given of greens, even outside of Britain, to which the Briton commonly resorts. Yet it scarcely seemed wise or necessary to change the title ; therefore let him who would quarrel with it do so or find some better reason for the inclusion of these foreign greens. A further likely question is, " If Pau, Cannes and Biarritz, why not—even a fortiori—Dinard, Jersey and Guernsey i" The truth is, that the scope of the book has had to be rigidly deter- mined by the kindness of friends—and, with the best of goodwill, they were not always able to help us—in sending accounts and views of the various greens; and, for the immense trouble which many have taken in this particular, the editor begs to give his best thanks. It was, in any case, impossible that the scope of the book should be all-exhaustive—that would have made it also all-exhausting.

    12 Great Ideas for Golf Tournaments TIP Golf Relay This is a team event where members of the team switch off 1 after each shot, like a relay running event. One person drives the ball, then the next hits the ball onto the green, then the next puts it in, and so forth and so on. The idea is just to switch out in a set rotation after each hit to make the course more challenging. The team that completes the tournament quickest and the team with the lowest score are both given prizes. 12 Great Ideas for Golf Tournaments TIP Golfathon There is a limited field of individual golfers (15-30) who 2 play as many holes as they can in a day. The golfers acquire pledges from sponsors for their rounds and it’s basically like any race where the golfer then tries to get in as many holes as possible to maximize pledges.     HIT IT CLOSER PINPOINT IRON PLAY Hugh Marr continues his series designed to get you closer to the hole by examining accurate ironplay – and the role played by balance in creating precise contact. PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM CRITCHELL ccurate ironplay means control both of direction and distance. It demands A a technique that controls the club’s path, the angle of its face, and the low point of the swing. That may sound a tall order, but in fact there is one quality that brings all these desirables together – balance. A balanced swing means a balanced movement of the club – and it’s only through this that you will achieve the consistency and precision needed for accurate ironplay. The golfer needs both static balance (set-up) and dynamic balance (swing). To find these we must work in harmony with human physiology, and gain a better understanding of the role of posture. With help from my colleague and expert biomechanist Mark Bull, I will look at both to explain what we truly mean by great balance in the golf swing – and show you simple ways to achieve it. He entered the final round six clear of his nearest challengers before a 71 led to a two-stroke victory over hard- charging Sergio Garcia (66) and Rickie Fowler (67). McIlroy’s win came at the age of 25 years, 2 months and 16 days in his 81st career start on TOUR. More on McIlroy’s win at the 2014 Open Championship McIlroy joined Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as players to complete three legs of the grand slam at the age of 25 or younger. Nicklaus won the 193 PGA Championship at the of 23, 6 months, while Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open at the age of 24 years, 5 months, 19 days. McIlroy becomes the 16th player to win three of the four major championships, and 44th different player to win at least three major championships. McIlroy becomes the seventh-youngest player to win their first three major championship titles. Prior to his WD, was hoping to become just the eighth player to post consecutive Open Championship victories since 1951 (16 overall): Padraig Harrington (2007-08), Tiger Woods (2005-06), Tom Watson (1982-83), Lee Trevino (1971-72), Arnold Palmer (1961-62) and Peter Thomson (1954-56).
