This storied venue hosted the Bob Hope Classic for 49 years. One of the first golf real-estate developments in the Coachella Valley, Bermuda Dunes is a vibrant community with a membership dedicated to keeping facilities updated and ensuring that the club remains competitive and highly successful today and always. Those who know and love this golf course—and there are many across America—will be pleased to know that Bermuda Dunes is back in the Bob Hope Classic rotation for next year. Bermuda Dunes has rightfully garnered the respect and admiration of many for its golf course, its social and dining facilities and for its fascinating history that is second to none. Read all about it in our cover feature starting on page 10. Speaking of the Bob Hope Classic, we welcome Larry Thiel, the Classic’s new chairman, to the desert. With more than 30 years experience in sports management and private club operations, Thiel brings a wealth of knowledge and business acumen to the Classic. He formerly served as president of the Jack Nicklaus Management Group, where his duties included overseeing operation of the Memorial Tournament. He was also executive director of The International tournament at Castle Pines in Colorado, widely known as the only PGA Tour event to use the Stableford scoring system. Thiel will work to secure new sponsorships for the Classic and to bring the venerable tournament back to its prominent position among PGA Tour events. Read more starting on page 40. With many of the celebrity tournaments already focused on next season, there are two [email protected] featured in this issue that are yet to be played and should not be missed. The Cox Celebrity Championship, hosted by New Orleans Saints quarterback and Super Bowl XLIV MVP Drew Brees, should prove to be one of the most exciting events of the season when top names from sports and entertainment tee it up for charity May 20-23 at Morgan Run Golf Course in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Read about it starting on page 36. Equally exciting is the Kevin Sorbo Golf Classic, to be held June 10-11 at revered DragonRidge Country Club in Henderson, Nev. Sorbo’s event supports A World Fit For Kids, an organization dedicated to helping kids stay fit and in school. Get all of the details starting on page 16. We would like to thank those of you who continue to be part of Desert Golf Magazine. We sincerely appreciate, and are humbled by, the generous support of our advertisers and subscribers in these tough economic times. One of our staunch supporters this season is Andalusia at Coral Mountain, an exceptional private facility in La Quinta, Calif, offering phenomenal golf as well as excellent home-buying opportunities. Also in La Quinta is another longtime supporter, SilverRock Resort, which is open to the public and part of the Bob Hope Classic rotation. SilverRock’s Arnold Palmer course offers plenty of game for any player. Finally, if you’re looking for that perfect gift for someone special in your life, we highly recommend Leeds & Son in Palm Desert. The company’s diverse selection of fine jewelry and watches rivals any in the desert region. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you. Thank you again for being part of the extended Desert Golf Magazine family. Sincerely, Timothy J.
